i ave a 12 monthh old patterdale,keen as mustard.will stick on anyting on th sod .droped him in a pocket a few weeks ago an he stuck in quarry an loved it.my only issue is that he dont hav any intrest in going down a hole.is he to young to understand.any genuine replys with ur opinions would be great

Dont give him too much stop ends,he will want the end of a dig the whole time if you do and will have no interest in goin to ground.

Yes I agree with fatman 100%....... The best advice is to make that the last time you drop him in short again. Next time your digging another dog out tie your pup up at the mouth of the entrance so he can hear the other dog working.. That should send him mad looking to run the holes. Maybe not the first time but it will pay off. Some do it quicker than others lad, just have a bit of patience, he's only a year old and id say still very green. Same as a child you have to crawl before you walk !!!! All the best with him bud.

Take him out on his ''own'' put the collar on him & walk across as many earth's has you can [The smaller earth's] & hopefully if his got the currents inside him he will self enter

Just make sure his first season of ''digging'' his winning & well rewarded

lol personaly myself mate if there bread right they should go there self also getting them to go is the easy part keeping them at it is more harder if i have a pup and he out on his first look and is not intrested i dont keep taking him out every week i will let the pup lie for a bit longer and try him again as for tieing him at the entrance i dont do that either i see no point young dog barking and whingeing only does my tits in tie him up away from the entrance he will still be taking things in atb mate with the pup

He's talking about a shoot i.e an artificial run for the dog ! If you don't know what that is your safer af leaving yourself in the house as well as your dogs. Not all well breed pups enter without schooling by the way. I've seen loads of dogs that have entered first go and easily more again that wernt too keen to travel either. The fella that started the thread didn't state how well bred his dog is anyway. Hes just looking advice. Keep it that way. Before another decent thread will be ruined by a load of bitching. As for you throwing the dog back in the pen for a while I'd disagree with you there. The more they're out and about the more they learn. The won't learn to work lying up in a dog box. Not were I'm from anyway.

artificial or not that is the biggest load of bollocks i have ever heard as for having a pup out that clearly isnt ready week in week out makes no sense to me at all and if u know the stuff in ur yard and ur so experinced with terriers u will have a idea when he is showing u signs he is ready for a look

LOL..... if a pup has been reared [bANNED TEXT] from the start..... socialising... farm yards... walks on roads.... squirrel hunting...stock broken...in and out of the van and box for longer travels....by the time this pup is 12 months hes a young terrier....seen a lot of the everyday things he going to encounter while out digging... by the time your ready to start taking that pup to burrows if he out of worker to worker then his next natural step should be to go to ground....but if the pup is not READY then me personally too would leave him in the kennells for 2-3 weeks then take him back out again....see if he matured any in that time then introduce him back to burrows to see if he clicked anymore yet...... and dont know where your from but too me any men walking down a field week in and week out way a pup that you know isnt mature enough......AND YOU STILL BRING IT WEEK IN AND WEEK OUT ...... WELL f**k ME I DEFINITLY WOULD NOT THROW A PUP UP TO YOU TO GET STARTED...... they old saying would know more about the HEEL OF A LOAF COMES TO MIND :whistling:
