They turn out shit because they are used early and because sadly they're cheap, plentiful, easy to access and if it don't do the lot before it's a year it's sold on as unspoilt and ready to go!? You c

Never understood why the lurchers seem to be used early..maybe thats why so many turn out shite. I'm a firm believer in a pup being a pup and no serious training until 1 year of age....

Ive got one Lurcher, his training started on day one of him coming home, he was trained not to pull on wool and was cattle broke from a real early age, i trained him some very basic commands very well

Your average lurcherman doesn't keep them long enough to train them later. Or thinking about it, train them at all.

I train all pups regardless of breed from day one . . .. once they reach a year or so i guess its just a case of intensifying the training to suit.

I'll agree with lab somewhat, by letting a pup be a pup you can see how it is maturing and tailor the training to to suit the individual.I tend to do all the basics from a young age sit/stay, walk to heel, retrieving and build the basics for quartering. Then depending on the pup i'll up the training, but that's not usually until about 10 too 12 months old

Good question mate, i'd love to know the answer, i've had the pleasure of watching (at one time) the best field trial dogs (and proper working) in the country being trained and they had nowt but socialisation and basics until 7 months or so and then in a reletivly short space of time learnt a huge deal. Now that just doesn't seem to work with running dogs, they run amok if not given shit to learn young it seems. :hmm:

Are you not training dogs no matter what breed, every moment you are with them?

Edited for punctuation yc.

You could wake up tomorrow, look in the right (or wrong) places and easily but half a dozen lurcher puppies by teatime!!! On the other hand though spaniels, labs, pointers decent collies and such like are not as freely available. Are they??? I haven't a clue how much a decent lab, pointer, spaniel puppy would set you back but I bet it's not a paltry £100. And sadly a lot of the guys who own lurchers have that throw away mentality. 10 months old, no good, get shot, get another and before you know it that one's ruined too. Pass it on to someone else who bangs a litter out of it and before you know it the messer will be buying pups off parents/grandparents ruined by his own hand...some poor lurchers'll have pretty crappy lives I would imagine.

because the lurcher world has not caught up with the proper training methods of training through drive, they're starting lurchers before drive even kicks in , and in most cases lurchers owners are only point and slip men , not all but a lot are it dont matter about standards of training if thats the case, gun dogs and protection dogs see the owner as their channel to work , the handler controls the drive, most lurcher owners let the quarry control the dog , you think most lurcher owners could control their dog at the sight of a rabbit like a lab owner controls his when a bird goes down , not a chance, different methods different results,,
