Trapping and Snaring Rabbits "well trying"

Recommended Posts

Hello to everyone,am new to the forum but very impressed.

I have about 2 acres full of rabbits i have been shooting them but need to get the numbers down.Have had a good read here on the forum. In theory it all seems ok but outside i'm going wrong somewhere.I am new to the trapping and snaring but am having a go.

I have got 5 cage traps and 10 snares for now.

1st: the cage traps were degreased and have been out for about 2 months.I have tried all the usual carrots greens and pnt butter, tried them all over the field in the ditches hedgelines etc.I have put shot rabbits urine on them, even painted one green. The rabbits are eating the bait outside the trap but will not go in.

2nd Had the snares out for 4 nights and 4days now and nothing, in the feild in the hedges etc.The field has been mowed right down so a lot of brown from the sun and i am struggling to see beats etc.I have attached some pics so maybe someone can help.Thank's in advance for any help!!!!!post-63625-0-37852600-1308520560_thumb.jpgpost-63625-0-89683200-1308520564_thumb.jpgpost-63625-0-92253500-1308520568_thumb.jpgpost-63625-0-08968600-1308520573_thumb.jpgpost-63625-0-14765700-1308520577_thumb.jpgpost-63625-0-33784200-1308520581_thumb.jpgpost-63625-0-70093700-1308520585_thumb.jpgpost-63625-0-73569900-1308520589_thumb.jpgpost-63625-0-56464200-1308520593_thumb.jpg

Alright mate i would seem alittle bit of a "Novice" in trapping and snaring but personally i would walk your permission and look for really well used runs and set a snare where the rabbits are using and are going through at the right hight for your snare. With the live trap i would put it near a warren with some think foilage over the top to disguise it. As the rabbits investigate the area which is in their nature they will get used to investigating it and BINGO :)

Hope this helps

i am no pro but i recently got some snares and i occasionaly snare a few rabbits for my ferrets what i done is wait until there are lots of rabbits out and see where they run as most of them will use the same root also as it is summer it is sometimes hard to see the runs they use because of all the thick vegetation also if there are any holes in fencing these are great places for snares hope this helps

Rabbits use sight, scent, sound and speed for survival.. Sight, scent and speed will affect you when snaring.. Sight, they can see nooses depending on size of loop and they can see snares that stand out, more so during daylight hours and combined with travelling at slow speed through the likes of a fenceline and scent they do pick foreign smells up.. this will affect things to a degree.. so you compensate by setting earlier, weathering, precise loop size and positioning, put everything in your favour..

Obviously this won't effect you when peg snaring out from the warrens on good runs as the rabbits will be at speed, as long as you have your snare placed correctly a good loop size and height then, scent will not effect it, or sight for that matter..

Have not posted for a long time now, but there is a probing interest within the animal bloody rights group to out right ban the snaring of animals and I state within Wales though not as yet in England, how do we as a collective argue against this?
I can understand the argument that traps are more use than snares, but we have to invoke the use of snares when dealing with foxes in certain predicaments, or am I mistaken, please somebody tell me whether I am right or wrong, I do not want to look as though I am misguided but the latest snares do not kill but restrain the animal which is a good thing and is being responsible towards the animals well being!
We as a responsible trapping society have to abide by the rules so why are we as a responsible trapping society always covering our backsides.
Is it getting more difficult to apply our trade?.
Personally I do not use poisons so the cost of job does increase, though I do see a better job satisfaction.
At the end of the day its not all about money.
We as a collective can not allow our sheer existence to be erased like a rubber. please fight for our rights as it will not stop at snaring it will escalate towards the usual trapping and eventually shooting so if you care about our rights think first.
