As there is nowt on the wings worth eating I usually take the whole winds off and dry them out for fly tying and the pin feathers are usually the first to be used. not too sure about any one else I think most people who shoot them do take them out as whenever I have been given a brace of woodcock the pin feathers are more often than not missing.

pat i take all the ones i shoot out, am sure in the olden days they were used for writing or painting to get a fine line being stiff. i have just glued two to my ngo metal badge, one day hope i can put four there , i hope so as the woodcock is my favourite sporting bird .cheers rob

I was told that feathers from live birds had sime kind of mites or something on them and that they could spread to the other fishing flies and destroy everything.

Is there any truth to this or is it just BS?
