I remember about 25 years back you'd always see these for sale .A guy locally had a nice fawn rough bitch he said was handy behind a hare.Just wondering anyone got any experience of these ?any good and if so why don't you see them about these days?? any pics be appreciated

boys up here used to keep mick douglas dogs they were smithfeild collie greyhounds i beleive , only saw 2 of them work regularly a dog called rooster and his daughter dancer both were exelent all round lurchers

I had a Mick Douglas lurcher years ago. Micks line were mainly kept by him for coursing when saluki greys were a little bit less popular than they are now. Mick told me he didn't like salukis much. I think his line started with a collie grey and he used studs that were winning at matching so it was a "bitsa" line.

When I bought the pup he'd named it Ashly.One of the dogs it was bred from was called Ashy but he'd named another pup from the litter Ashy. I changed the name of mine to Ashy too as I liked it better than Ashly. At the time Mick was fielding a bitch called Swiftney but my pup was bred from his older bitch whose name I don't recall.

Ashy was a rough coated dark brindle and became one of the best lamping dogs I've had. He was a little slow to make a good hare dog but he never gave up on anything.(At all). I eventually gave him away to a friend as his obsession with lamping drove me mad. If I picked the lamp up to move it he spent the rest of the night whineing and looking at the door.

I'll see if I can find a photo and scan it into the computer.

The best of them were excellent coursers with tough feet and bottomless stamina and some were very showy too. Mick died last year (as was reported on here) so there are no Mick Douglas lurchers anymore.

HAD THE PLEASURE OF MEETING MICK WHO WAS A VERY GENUINE MAN. HOWEVER IN MICKS DAY ORGANISED COURSING HADNT TAKEN OFF AS IT DID IN THE 90`S & THE COURSING SCENE BECAME SATURATED WITH SALUKI CROSSES WHO WERE MORE SPECIALISED TO THE TASK. HIS BREEDING WAS WELL SOUGHT AFTER AT 1 TIME & MEN SUCH AS HIM ARE SORELY MISSED. THE LAST TIME I SPOKE 2 HIM HE WAS WORKING ON HIS BOAT & FREELY ADMITTED 2 ME HE WASNT BREEDING 4 HIMSELF BUT 2 SIMPLY SELL THE PUPS THAT WERE DECENTLY BRED, SO THERE MUST BE SOME OF BREEDING AROUND?? RIP.MICK

Thanks for the replies fellas sounds my type of breed as I said this was a stunning fawn rough coated bitch love to see some more pics and here a bit more about these thats a beauty of a dog lurcher reminds me of my late uncles type he kept in the 70s

i got this pup of mick douglas in sept 82 he was out of a bitch called rust,

i think rust was bred by someone else

ive kept lurchers for nearly 40 years and have not had anything that has come anywhere near this douglas bred dog

I was told by someone who knows that Saluki blood was added to Mick's line. They were still rough coated, but stamina and good feet came in through the Saluki side of things. We are talking at least 25-30 years ago, maybe more.

Oddly enough the two images of dogs shown so far don't differ 'that' much from my two!

 

Not exactly in their prime at 11 and 13 years old.

A Mick Douglas lurcher from 30 years ago purchased off Mick by a mate the bitch was an average coursing dog and was mated to a saluki x about 83 i had a pup out of the mateing wich made a decent dog bar giving the odd yipp now and again wich 3 more of his litter mates would also have the same habit.

A good friend of mine owned 1 he was a fantastic rabbit dog very obiadiant wee bread tha dog to a track greyhound and got a 27 inch dog from it he was the fastest dog I've seen I witneset this dog kill somtimes at 200 yard slips and was a great daytime dog I've got some pics a him I put him back to my old collie grey il dig pictures out a great line of dogs met mick twice he will be sadly mist
