what to semi and what hushpower

Recommended Posts

Im goning to send off for my fac and sgc very soon just waiting for one of my referee to get back from holidays.

Iv got about 1200 to spend altogether. this is what i had in mind (if i get granted what i want)

Hatsan escort 12g with 28 inch barrel (or simular)

Baikal .410 Stealth or a mossberg pump action hushpower

mossberg 817 plinkster .17hmr or CZ 452 Silhoutte .17hmr

could you tell me if there is any other models i should be looking at if you think that they are better than my inital choice please

and what cartridges you find best in the hush powers

then when i have a little bit more cash i will look into getting an over under of some kind, i like the look of the 686 silver pigeon, but that will have to wait lol

any input would be much appreciated :drinks:

Hi

1200 should get you a nice setup.

Id probably go for the hushpower baikal (or similar) in .410 as its much cheaper than the mossberg. 2nd hand your looking at about £200->£225 for one - whereas the mossberg goes for about £400. The mossberg is quite a long gun and the click click of the pump can be a bit noisey when your out in the field!

The escort semi has mixed reviews, so id be tempted to go for a "brand name" like a beretta. Will cost you more money, but would be a good investment. You can get an older beretta semi for £300 or less. Or, splash out on a al391 for about £600->£700.

That leaves you 400quid for the rifle. Im not an expert on rifles, but ive heard a lot of good things about the CZ ones and not really heard anyone comment on mossberg rifles.

Cartridge wise, I use the 3inch subsonic`s in the hushpower. But, you can use anything in it really although they wont be as quiet.

I have the York Guns 'Stealth' .410 moderated single barrel shotgun and paid £315 new with a few boxes of cartridges thrown in (they are RRP £389 I think). I use Eley FourLong (the 2.5") No.5 shot, which strangely are quieter than the 3" subsonics or standard FourTen 2". They work well and it is a light quiet gun. I have taken out one rabbit while the others carry on feeding undisturbed. I use an Ultrafire WF-501B with Luxeon K2 Red LED torch mounted to the moderator for night time forays.

I also have the Escort in 7+1 and have found it to perform reliably except when fully loaded. The extra spring pressure seems to stop it feeding properly, so I might cut off a few coils to see if it improves the reliability when loaded with more than 2+1. Good gun generally and I am happy (got mine new for £330 a year or two ago).

if you come under gwent police I dout you will get both, but good luck. I wouldnt go for a hatsan , go for big names but older guns. I would bother with a .410 (thats judt me tho) and a cz rifle will do you proud. good luck

why wouldnt he get both? and i use a hatsan and it works perfect.

If he gets standard (i.e. mag cap of 3 or less) pump action, then he can hold as many as his little heart desires, or his security arrangements allow anyway. It's only for FAC arms you need to prove "reasonable cause to hold" for each weapon. For those held on a SGC you can hold as many as you want, as I said, security provision allowing.

I honestly think that it would be a little foolish to go out and buy everything in one go..... it seems like your putting the emphasis on getting as much as you possibly can for your money...,(quantity not quality) i am a firm beliver that you get what what you pay for (within reason) so bearing this in mind id suggest picking 1 item from your list,do your homework and perhaps a little window shopping then pick the one gun from your shortlist that would get used the most, and concentrate my efforts on finding the best gun of that type available for you regardless of its cost,be it the fac or s/g.Go to your nearest game fair as there would be a lot wider choice for you to have a look at rather than restricting your self to what the local gunshop has on the shelf, you can always go back and order the gun from your local shop if you like one that they dont have in stock, and if you run out of cash or spend a little more than you wanted,no worries,it just means you get to use and enjoy your new purchase whilst saving for the next one on the list !! dont forget to allow for cleaning kits ect.....atb :)

There have been a lot of people say the Hatsan autos are no good but some love em!

Personally I wouldnt buy an auto in any shape or form but thats my choice I just dont like em.

Moderated .410 I have used a friends and it was OK again something I wouldnt bust a gut to buy.

The .22 again personal choce but the CZ's are very good, my gunsmith mate reccomends em highly!

I would personally go for the American varmint model (heavy barrel)
