Getting dogs fit for the season

Recommended Posts

How and when do you all get your dogs fit for the season? My jodie is a right lazy cow in the summer, she hardly ever runs about unless there is something worth chasing, she gets fat quick, even though she gets fed the least out of the lot!! The only way i can get her fit is when the season starts and just run her every night, obviously she gets fit but it takes a good month for peak fitness and it is irritating as the beginning of the season is shite as the catch rate is poor due to lack of fitness and she comes back 'sqeauking' after a good old run as i call it!! I would like her to be at peak fitness raring to go at the start of season, so any ideas how? I have just got a bike to do some good exersize that way, but i have thought about running her alongside the car down a quiet lane, what do you lot think? Obviously start slow and gradually build up, never done it before but thought it was a good idea to get her running fit!! I'll be damned if i'll reach the speed of a bunny on the bike and she has a good habit of suddenly stopping for a piss or shite!! :whistling:

The car/bike does the same sort of thing it will get/keep them at a half decent baseling fittness, I do about 5/6 mile a on a bike aday and 99% of it is free running so when they need to shit or piss they do without any sudden jurk ect, Plus a walk in the evening,

But just before the season is here you want to do some short hard runs after a ball of some sort, and do this till they tire then walk them for 10 mins and do the same again and build up to there running more and more at a time,

That way it builds the muscles back up to sprinting that they dont get walking/jogging beside the car/bike and gets the lungs used to recovering quicker and quicker after each run that you need when working....

And a few weeks at that then the real thing cause nothing gets them going like running them fit on rabbits (my quarry)

Atb for the season ahead..

P.s Food is an important part to any fittness plan

walk the dogs first to let them toilet and warm up the muscles then jog them behind the motor or bike them for a few miles at first and a slow steady pace, building it up as the weeks go on to a few more miles and making sure wherever you do it is quiet, as free from traffic, other dog walkers, game etc

bike is a good idea if u go on ebay and put in walky dog its a brilliant bit of kit that u attach to your bike frame ive had one for years u can let them pull u which will build up the chest and also u have total control of the dog. ive used them with all my rottis and now with my lurcher and never been pulled off infact i even put my 2 year old son on the back of my bike in his bike seat. i did use just a lead the other week on the bike with my lurcher and something scared him and he paniced and got caught up in the back wheel so i would be carful with using just a lead. free running behind u is good try and find some hills once she starts getting fit. what about swimming while its summer time. hope this helps.

i forgot to say do the bike run before she has a first feed and she will burn more fat on an empty belly.

Just the sort of place my dogs love blowing off a bit of steam at  good few hours running loose on there soon gets the toungues out,Im also gonna use a bike to put some more wind into them but not for a couple off months yet likely around mid sept I will start with the bike rooutine and build up on the miles and pace over a few weeks, the least any of mine see is about 5 mile a day thats all year round, only differenc in summer is that they go out really early or really late when its cool enough,

We dont really ever let ours down, just keep them steady in fitness,( although this years Heat has been a struggle ) then once the season is here the more we work them the fitter they get, Its Like the old days of Coursing, the dogs were never MATCH fit till they were running IN matches

Its been My Prefered opinon that to get a dog fit it should take approxiamately 6 weeks and altering diet accordingly

Thanks for all the advice people, she gets a good walk everyday anyway, always free range with some road walking here and there, over hills, over flat land, the walks are a minimum of 1 hour and anything up to 4 hours, but she just doesn't run about much at all, unless something jumps out of bushes which i try to avoid this time of year, doing ball work is a no no as she just isn't interested, she's not fussed with toys and she doesn't do swimming either :wallbash: She's just damn lazy unless she actually needs to run :censored: If i bike with her she will have to be on lead as there is nowhere for her to bike with me off lead but i have put her alongside the car and she did really well. Will give the jogging a go though :whistling:
