Shooting Competitions?

Recommended Posts

Hey Folks,

I'm looking for some information on how shooting competitions generaly work. I have been shooting with both a shotgun and airgun for about a year now and want to start having a crack at some competitions.

Is there a governing body that arange competitions in the UK? Are there standardized distances for targets?

I'm completely green when it comes to competitions so any help would be appreciated.

Regards,

Machiavelli.

You don't say if you want to try competitions with shotgun or airgun, or both?

If you have a powerful airgun, for hunting, you could have a go at field target comps, they are ok for that. There are classes for springers and pcp types. Various venues advertise in the airgun magazines. Target shooting is mostly over a 10 meter range, and indoors, but you need a specialist rifle for this. I used to do air pistol target, I gave up when the local club lost it's premises.

There are lots of "grass roots" type of clay shoots, look on the cpsa website for one near wherever you are. I go to one locally, twice a month. Members help set up, and take down afterwards. A great way to spend a Sunday morning, a bit of banter and p**s taking goes on, but it's all friendly. beginners are always welcome.

I sometimes feel, the image the cpsa try to show of clay shooting can actually put people off having a go.

My local shooting ground`s clientel are far from this! Although we do get a few blokes who meet the above criteria - but I tend to avoid them.

Id checkout a few local shooting clubs and see whats in your area. Its a great place to start, have fun and meet people. They`ll know about all the local competitions, and probably organise some themselves.

Airgunning in general is becoming very popular atm and clubs are springing up all over the place, so you shouldnt have any problems finding some. If you do, have a chat to your local gunshop... they usually can recommend local places.
