Hi mate , we have Fisher's here in Ontario, but generally more north than where i live, the main problem of working terriers to them is they tend to make dens up tree's as apposed to on the ground , secondly i believe the season on them wouldn't be conducive to digging unless you like digging or should i say chipping through 4ft of permafrost, also i think they'd make short work of a terrier to be honest! there one of the few animals along with Wolverines that kill and eat Porcupines, no mean feat !!! they really are nasty little F$#@kers,

My terrier and Saluki try and nail the european Beach marten,we get a lot of them in the pine forests around me but being highly arboreal they bugger upwards pretty quick..

We have problems with Processionary caterpillar's seasonaly so I stay on the open hillside most of the year.Do you have any similar problem caterpillars?

Thanks for the reply mate, I've heard these Fishers kill dogs and cats in the US but a good working Patterdale should be within a shout. What about the APBT or the American Bulldog do you think they could handle a Fisher.

I saw that pic where an EBT killed a Porcupine.

You might be able to take one down when its on the ground running with a APBT but anything smaller or less aggressive would be toast especially if its backed up in a corner, a Patt would be too brave for its size and would probably get shredded, as you can see on those pics they have very LONG claws,, personally there's lots of other game without haveing to go to the Artic circle :) and get the shit kicked out of my dogs, cos thats what would happen !!!

Fishers are very difficult to find, and as CoyoteHunter said they will usually den in the trees (or maybe a rock den).

Plus it would be illegal (in Ontario anyway) as they can only be trapped for their fur....not hunted for sport.

A good terrier could definitely handle a Marten, but again they are usually in the trees....but are more numerous and can sometimes be found in the firewood pile around cabins. Again, though it is against the law to take unless you hold a trapper's license.

Many more abundant and accessible quarry willing to give a terrier a good run for their money: red fox, raccoon, opossum, groundhog, coyote and badger (mainly in the west).
