in regards to whippets as workers, whippets are grand but do had couple bad points, they feel the cold, skin tears very easily and some do not have the stamina to do a full nights lamping,

also there are different types of whippet, the working type and racing type

the worker will be taller and a tad more stocker i would personaaly perfer to use this type the racey is smaller and can be more nervy, and has the disadvantage of less height to see her surroundings

either type of whippet will get rabbits, and of course introduce to ferrts!! the earlier the better, best of luck mate and keep us posted

hi jacko

i,ve a bigger whippet, they,re not a bad little dog for what you want, as been said their skin can tear a bit easy, and a bit prone to getting knocked up, and can be a little headstrong, but they will give you 100% in the field. give me a pm if you wish and we can have a look out if your near my parish.

yors Russ.

just take your time with the new dog because its a bit older, but shouldnt have many problems the whippet is a handy little dog, start off with it seeing the ferret in the hutch running up and down so it gets used to seeing it,then let it see you playing with the ferret as much as possible so it sees its more like a friend a few wks in the hutch and a few wks you playing with ferret will help, next you could try a bowl of milk out for the ferret let the dog see it drinking the milk it will get curious to see what its drinking and should start drinking with the ferret, but just keep an eye on it.If you have any minor setbacks dont worry ie the dog wanting to bite the ferret just keep telling no its a friend the dog will soon come around, this has always worked for me it just takes time and patience, good look mate with the lovely whippet and giving it a chance at 8 mths old not many would do that so good on you they are brilliant little dogs(just remember patience then more patience) dont give up you will have a good dog for life.

If the dog is not used to a lead then its not likely to be very fit so start with a lot of road work. Take it everywhere with you to bond, socialise and build up her confidence. Over the summer months build up the fitness with good food and exercise - to start just train her in the yard to heel, sit, retrieve, then do the same out in a park and finally get ready to enter her later in the year. I have a pup about the same age.

i've got a couple whippets, greatest little dogs. You'll have a lot of fun. In about 6 months you'll want a second to keep it company, and so you should.

As this dog hasn't worked, be really careful about obsticles with this dog. when you get it chasing, they can run blind, that is chase the rabbit and not look what's between them and the rabbit. this can be bad for the pup.

my advice is to get this dog used to running through obsticles as much as possible before before you take it hunting.
