  6. The Combined Clubs Charity Dog Show Sunday 3rd September 17 at Annaghmore Raceway, Annaghmore, Co Armagh Deep in the heart of Orchard County, is the now famous Annaghmore Raceway, with its fine landscapes and magnificent Pony and Jib race track. It was a previlege to have this fine venue for the Combined Clubs annual Charity Dog Show Sunday 3rd September 17. With the beauty of the countryside and good company, what more could we ask for, and a great family day out. The weather could have been better, with the odd shower of rain, but this did not dampen the spirits of the good Canine men and women of the Doggie world. As the cars and trailers arrived, it was evident the popularity of this annual Charity show, and by noon all parking places were full. A nice surprise on the day was that the Combined Clubs had acquired a field adjacent to the race track where the show rings were, and decided to have simulated racing in there. This brought a great buzz of excitement, with Janet Dukes winning dog Maeve romping home to victory to take the prize for the Overall Simulated Race. What a proud owner, and Maeve was in top form and rearing to go. Very soon it was raffle time, and it was my lucky day with winning 3 prizes in the raffle. John was none too pleased, as he is the one who wins all in our family. There was a picture and no sound for a while, but all was well later. Time passes so quickly, and very soon it was show time. Here are the Results of the Showing. Overall Champion Terrier Janet Duke with Frankie Reserve Eamo Mc Erlean with Spooky Overall Champion Lurcher Mickey Quinn with Hoss Reserve Rick Hepburn with Storm Overall Champion Whippet Dean Mc Straw with Papps Reserve Rick Hepburn with Kerry Overall Champion Strong Dog Davy Boyd with Buck Alec Reserve Kieran O Neill with Roco Overall Champion and Best in Show Mickey Quinn with Hoss Reserve Davy Boyd with Buck Alec A Big Congratulations to all above winners, and Good luck to the qualifiers for the Five Nations Championships 2018. And Finally, may I take this opportunity to thank the Judges at this Charity Show. Lurchers and Whippets, Sammy Shaw/Strong Dogs, John Barry/Terriers Paul Mc Alinden. Judging is not an easy Job, but you carried out your remit firm but fair. I took quite a lot of Photographs myself , and are on my Face Book time line at the moment. A special word of thanks to the owner of Annaghmore Raceway Clive Richardson for allowing the club the use of this magnificent venue for this event. If it were not for you Clive this event would not be happening. For that we are truly grateful. And Finally, Finally, many thanks to Tom Barry, Santas little helper Ethan Barry, and the Combined Clubs team for another great Dog Show. A lot of hard work went into organising this event, and Tom it was a credit to you and your organisational skills. You pulled out all the stops, and made the whole event a roaring success. As Sundays show was for charity and in aid of Alzheimers, hopefully the shows donation will help in some small way, to give comfort to people during treatment, or help to care for them in the last days of their life here on this earth. Remember your were part of this, and a big thank you to everyone who contributed in any way or attended the show. Alzheimers is a very needy cause, and can attack the system at any age. Nobody knows what tomorrow will bring, and it is nice to know that there are people waiting in the wings to help us out in our hour of need. I am told from a very reliable source, that Mr Red is back from his summer holidays. Well its that time of year when I will have to gather my Canine friends together and go and visit him. Thanks again to all for your generosity, and God willing we will have another Charity Dog Show again in 2018. Margaret Mc Stay

  11. The Irish Game and Country Fair at Birr Castle, Sunday 27th August 17 Written on the menu board in my mind for the past couple of weeks was a road trip to Birr Castle Irish Game Fair. On Sunday the 27th August, I was able to mark it off as done, for overnight it became a reality, and rolled on into the real world. Within a hares breath we were on our way down the motorway in convoy fine and early, to this beautiful part of “Gods plan of Nature” in the County Offaly countryside. Birr Castle is a very impressive Castle situated on 1200 acres of walled estate in the Magical Midlands of Ireland. With its extensive 17th century parkland, gardens, lakes, rivers, and famous herbaceous borders, this was the magnificent venue for this years Great Game Fairs of Ireland. We arrived at Birr Castle at 9.30am, parked up, exercised the dogs, and headed up for our annual browse around the Game Fair and its many attractions. I will have to say this years Game Fair was bigger and better than any other year I have been to Birr Castle, and I have been to many. The weather was brilliant, the crowds were overflowing, the atmosphere was electric, and as they say in the South of Ireland, the craic was mighty. As I moved around the Game Fair I met up with some old friends, but also made some new ones. Along the way I got speaking to a very nice lady from County Limerick who was involved with the Terrier and Lurchers at Adair Game Fair, County Limerick for 19 years. What a learned lady, and so interesting to speak to. It was nice to reminisce with someone who has been there and done it all. You know who you are and it was an education and a pleasure speaking to you. Jill and Paul Pringle were out in force on the Great Game Fairs of Ireland stand, speaking to the many visitors who had come to the Game Fair from Ireland, from England, Scotland, Wales, Canada, Germany and further afield. What a lovely couple. They were very popular on this stand and phenomenal interest was shown in The Irish Country Sports and Country life Magazine. No doubt Jill and Paul made sure every visitor to the stand took a free copy away with them. It was time for some retail therapy, so our first stop was The Edinburgh Clothing Company, and we were not disappointed. Paul Fielding was on the stand, and as usual with his very welcoming and gentlemanly ways. No doubt I did not leave empty handed, and got a good bargain. We stopped off at the main Arena to watch Derek O Byrne White strut his stuff, and what an entertaining event that was. If only I could line dance like that. Brilliant workmanship and entertainment Derek with your horses, and the line dancing ladies were magnificent. Birr Castle would not be Birr Castle without paying a visit to my good friend Stephen Smith at the Barbour Stand. No matter when I meet this man he is like a ray of sunshine and a great salesman. I can honestly say Stephen has the best range of Barbour Clothing in Ireland and very easy to deal with. Time was catching up on us, and very soon it was time to head back to the Dog Show Arena, for a full programme of showing and racing, and the big events of the day, the Prestigious Mick The Miller racing Championship. Here are the Showing and Racing Results: Overall Champion Whippet Barry Chambers with Ruby Reserve Karen Cummins with Maisie Overall Champion Lurcher Tricia Donagh with Chunk Reserve Mikie Lyons with Sky Overall Champion Terrier Eamo Mc Erlean with Spooky Reserve John Keane with Ted Overall Champion and Best in Show Eamo Mc Erlean with Spooky Reserve Tricia Donagh with Chunk 3rd Barry Chambers with Ruby Overall Puppy Champion Dawn Jones with Thor Reserve Fiona Devlin with Musty ***Racing Results The Mick The Miller All Ireland Racing Championship 1/Ned Kane with Fonk 2/Chris Canavan with Maggie Directors Challenge 1/ James Mc Guinness with Snare 2/ Nicky Smith with Buster Under 21 Mal Mc Fall with We Scared Under 23 Mal Mc Fall with Frozen Scared Over 23 Stephanie O Connor with Orla Bull Cross Jed Donagh with Chunk Whippets Charlene Rafferty with Zio Terriers Jed Donagh with Faye A Big Congratulations to all the above worthy winners At 5.30pm it was time to head up to the main arena for the historic 5 Nations Lurcher Championship. This is now an annual event at Birr Castle and generates a great buzz of excitement around the main Arena. While the judging was taking place, Stephen Mc Gonigle mingled with the good canine people around the arena with his PA System in tow, and had some great banter and chat with like minded people. Albertj Titterington drove up alongside the main arena in his bat mobile, and announced that there were two very important presentations to be made before the judging ended. At this point Kieran Young announced the winner of the Colette Gannon perpetual Cup for ”Country Sport Persons of the Year” 2017 won by an over whelming popular vote. This accolade went to Tricia and Jed Donagh, and what a well deserved win Tricia and Jed, and a glowing tribute to the memory of Collette. I have no doubt this beautiful treasure will take pride of place on the mantelpiece in the Donagh home to August 2018. Next award was made by Mr Albertj Titterington, to Alan Crosbie for his lifetime contribution to Country Sports and his brilliant Charity contribution from the proceeds of his Dog Show in 2017. Well done Alan and well deserved. Next on the menu and concluding a wonderful day at Birr Castle Game Fair was the results of the 5 Nations Lurcher Championship called out by Stephen Mc Gonigle as Follows: ***And Now For The Big One/ Five Nations Champion Lurcher went to:*** Jed Donagh with Chunk Reserve Pat Dunphy with George A Big Congratulations to both men and well done. And Finally, there is one very special friend I would like to thank for escorting myself and my weary feet back up to my car for my journey back home up north. Yes it is you Finbarr Spain a lovely gentleman and his dog Rooney. Finbarr pulled up beside me in his van as I was leaving the main arena, and offered me a lift back up to my car. You were my guardian angel Finbarr, as my body was wearing low after walking around the rings all day. Many thanks for that. Who wants Alberts bat mobile, when I have my own private transporter. As usual the Roscrea team ran the show like clockwork. What a brilliantly efficient crew of people. Shane Lee, you and your team Rose and Niamh Troy, and other names I do not know, carried out your duties with sheer grit and determination and in a very professional manner, and many thanks for that. The Judges on the day were first class. Rose Mc Coy Pets/Tracy Crosbie Whippets/Lurchers Nigel Quinn/Terriers John Hendrix. Five Nations Judges : Kieran Young/Alan Crosbie/Donal Smith. A job well done and carried out to perfection. And Finally, Finally, I always leave the best to last. This accolade goes out to Albertj Titterington and his lovely wife Irene, and their Co Directors for a great weekend in Birr Castle. Albertj without you and your brilliant team this would not be possible .So many of our Canine folk look forward through the window of Country Sports, to your 2 Great Game Fair events of the year at Shanes Castle, and Birr Castle. As we are approaching the dark cold days and long nights of winter, when the snow hits the window, we will gather round the fire, and chat about our moments of glory and the craic we had at your Game Fairs, and all the other Dog shows up and down the country, who also gave us so much joy and entertainment during the year. Albert, you are Simply the Best, and will always be “King Of The Castle.” May Irene and yourself have good health and happiness and continue to run your top Game Fairs for many years to come. Albert you do so much for and contribute to Country Sports, and work so hard behind the scenes to make things happen, we are truly grateful. Thanks for all the lovely memories of 2017, and look forward to seeing you again in 2018 God willing. ***All the Photographs of Birr Castle are on my Facebook Timeline at the moment and many more from shows through out the year.*** Margaret Mc Stay

  13. Our thanks go to all the COUNTRYSPORTS ENTHUSIASTS who supported the Irish Game & Country Fair at Birr Castle and to all of our sponsors, exhibitors, event organisers and competitors for creating a very magical family atmosphere at the fair. The weather too played its part and with two days of autumnal sunshine the crowds rolled in. BIG BIG thanks to our team for the manner in which they prepared the ground and then cleared up. The inimitable Harry Cook was there filming all the action and this video will be available shortly. Albertj PS please note unlike people who post abuse and non factual material on this forum under an alias or even multiple aliases I took the decision to publish under my own name as my posts are factual and as I don't publish abuse ( foul or otherwise).

  20. Armagh Sporting Dog Charity Show. ( Fiona Devlins Show ) Sunday 13th August 17 As the sweet tones of my Samsung rang out at the break of dawn, it was signaling another new day and another great sporting event on the horizon. With the river Bann rippling in the distance, loads of good country fresh air, we headed down the motorway to Feaghbridge Dog Track. Situated on the outskirts of Coalisland Co Tyrone, and lies along side the shores of Lough Neagh, this was the venue for Fiona Devlins Armagh Sporting Dog Show and Race day Sunday 13th August 17. We arrived at the track around 10.30am, and at that time the field was filling up fast, and by the start of show time the venue was filled to capacity. As this show was for charity, families and trailers arrived in abundance with their loyal Canine friends in tow, all crooning the dog chorus, and full of winning spirit. The weather was good, and although a little cloudy at times, there was no rain in sight. The children had a field day with loads of room for them to play safely, and under the watchful eye of parents and family. It was evident from the start, that this show was going to run like clockwork as Fiona is an expierenced hand in this area, as she has run many very successful shows over the years. The organisation and timing was impeccable, resulting in the show keeping to schedule and starting on time. The Racing started at approximately 12.30 followed by the showing. Here are some Racing Results:Hope I have them all right. As the day progressed, it was raffle time and then the excitement began. There were some great prizes in this raffle. Of course avid punter John Mc Stay gave his usual performance, holding his hands up to heaven, when his tickets were drawn and walked away with couple of nice prizes. The raffle is the highlight of Johns day at the dog shows and went home one very happy camper. The raffle was followed by an Auction. Some very valuable prizes were auctioned here, and all for a very good cause. Fiona you done a great job as auctioneer. I think you have missed your vocation in life. And Finally, may I take this opportunity to thank the judges on the day, who done a wonderful job. Whippets/ Noel Sherry Lurchers/ Jed Donagh Terriers/ Niall O Cloghan Strong Dogs/ Terence Metcalfe Childrens/Ladies and Gents Handling Classes/ Margaret Mc Stay You all judged with accuracy and integrity, and a job well done. Billy Harpur was there with his camera, clicking away at every opportunity. Billy is very professional and takes some lovely photographs. I also took some with my mobile. These are all up on my time line at the moment. The racing like everything else on show day went like clockwork. Maurice Mc Dowell, you done a great job at the starting line, getting everyone off their marks on time, while Fiona Devlin herself kept tabs on the finishing line. Maurice and Fiona, you made a very valuable contribution to the success of the show racing plan.Great team work by both individuals. And Finally, Finally, the best is always left to last. What can I say that will gather the skills, fuelled spirit and determination together of this young lady Fiona Devlin. Along with your partner Conor Mc Cormick and your brilliant band of helpers, you have pulled together one of the best Sporting Dog shows I have been to this year, with super efficiency. Fiona, you are a true Country Sportswoman, and keep your sport very close to your heart. You have run a top class show, and thank you for a most enjoyable and memorable day out at Feabridge. And the good news, the proceeds from this Charity show going to “The Cancer Fund For Children” was the grand sum of £1300. What an achievement. Remember all good Canine men and women its your money that will help ease the pain in some small way of some of our little people suffering from this terrible disease. Cancer has no mercy on young or old. Fiona you are a woman in a million with a giving heart, and well done for this very worthy cause. Many thanks for the lovely presentation you made to me on the day. I truly appreciate it. I am already looking forward to your next show in 2018. Margaret Mc Stay
  21. Tully Castle Dog Show and Festival Saturday 12th August 17 I never grow tired of the scenic views and history that surrounds this little piece of heaven called Tully Castle. Sitting on Tully Point and tucked away in the County Fermanagh Country side, this was the venue for Tully Castle Festival and Dog Show Saturday 12th August 17. We set out fine and early with no dogs for a change, as my husband John Mc Stay was judging at the show. After meeting up with some canine friends along the way, we had breakfast and then headed on to Enniskillen and Tully Castle. As usual, we were first in the field with the exception of the stand holders. When we arrived, we had our yearly trip up around the Castle. Mindful of these ruins been steeped in history, within those historic walls I could hear in my minds ear the sound of voices in the air, of a house and family that lived there long, long, time ago. From 12noon onwards the crowds began to arrive, and by show time the grounds of the Castle came alive with the sound of barking dogs of all breeds. There was a Bouncy Castle, walking Balls, and many other activities for the children to enjoy. An ice cream and burger van was on site as well as many stands with craft and jewellery, and some very tasty home produced food. We basked all day in the glorious sunshine, while the Churchill band serenaded all at the festival in true summer time style. As the beautiful strains of Danny Boy rang out over the Fermanagh countryside, this beautiful music added to the atmosphere and enjoyment of the Dog Show and Festival. Time passes so quickly when you are enjoying yourself and very soon it was showing time. Here are the Overall showing Results: Congratulations to all the winners in the Childrens Handling Class. You were all winners in my mind. Overall Show Champion Lurcher Michael Quinn with Buster Overall Show Champion Terrier Terence Mc Laughlin with Rusty Overall Show Champion Whippet Janet Duke with Oscar Best Local Dog Stuart Hassard with Lollie Overall Show Champion and Best In Show : Janet Duke with Oscar Reserve Show Champion and Best in Show Michael Quinn with Buster A Big Congratulations to all above Champions and winners, and all who took part on the day, well done. May I take this opportunity to thank the judges on the day. John Mc Stay Whippets/ Lurchers. Gene Gallagher/Terriers for a job well done. Judging is not an easy task, but you carried out your duties firm and fair. As in every year gone past, I must not forget to thank Norma Heap and her PA system, for announcing the names and results of the showing without a hitch. Over the years Norma you have done a wonderful job and the show would not be the same without you. With your friendly voice you keep us all on our toes and many thanks for that. And Finally, I dandered around the rings and took some photographs of all our moments of glory with my mobile. Billy Harpur was there also and added the professional touch to the photography on the day. All these photographs are on my Face Book timeline at the moment. And Finally, Finally, I always leave the best to last. I would like to thank the festival committee Norma Heap/Emily Hall/Nicola Heap/Sue Hogg/Gillian Carroll/Wesley Scott and other names I do not have. It was evident there was great teamwork on the day, and success shone through in abundance at this festival. And now to the king of Tully Castle himself Scott Fallis. You made everybody so welcome, your dog show ran so smoothly and was a credit to your organisational skills, and above all the whole day was most enjoyable. As the long dark days of winter are closing in on us, and the show scene is coming to an end for another year, we will look back with fond memories of our day out at Tully Castle Dog Show. Scott, we really enjoyed the show and the beauty of Tully Castle, and look forward to more of the same in 2018 God willing. Margaret Mc Stay
  22. North Sligo Agriculture Show Gene GallaghersTerrier/Lurcher/Whippet Dog Show and Race Day Saturday 5th August 17 We started out early on Saturday morning, met up with some friends along the way, and headed up the motorway to beautiful Yeats Country and the North Sligo Agriculture Show/Dog Show. Sitting in the lap of the beautiful table mountain of Ben Bulben, lies the village of Grange Co Sligo. This was the venue for North Sligo Agriculture Show, and Gene Gallaghers Lurcher, Terrier, and Whippet Dog Show. The sun shone in abundance, and this was backed up with a wealth of craic, banter, good food, great company, and after the showing good music and song from Gerry Guthrie to dance to. What more could anyone ask for. As we arrived early, we had time to go up through the show and soak up the nice Carnival buzz and all the fun of the fair. There were many feet on the ground and the atmosphere was electric. Every Agricultural animal you could mention was on show. Cows, sheep, horses, various stands, bouncy Castles, and climbers for the children, and many more attractions on offer, to many to mention. Along the way I met up with some good canine friends I had not seen for a couple of years. Catherine and Matt Slevin came all the way from County Wexford, as did Pat Lynch and his son Michael who travelled from Strabane. What great Canine and Country Sports people these people are, enjoying all the fun of the fair in Sligo The venue for the dog show was superb this year, with well spaced out rings, easy access, ringside parking and a good racetrack. The Racing started at approximately 12.30, followed by Showing. There was a very poignant moment, when Hugh Mc Gowan stepped forward to present the PJ Mc Gowan memorial Perpetual Cup to Colin Maguire : Best in Show winner. This cup was donated by the Mc Gowan family in memory of their late father, a top Terrier man and kept Terriers all his life. What a lovely accolade. And Finally, may I take this opportunity to thank the judges, Peter Cummins Lurchers/ Terriers Matt Slevin/Whippets Michael Quinn for a job well done. Judging is not an easy job at any time, but you carried out your duties to perfection And Finally, Finally, our very enjoyable day out at Sligo dog show would not of been possible without the hard work and determination of Gene Gallagher and his brilliant team of helpers. It was evident a lot of hard work and sleepless nights went on behind the scenes in the run up to this show. Gene, your dog show was a credit to you and your team, and made Saturday a most enjoyable day for all the good Canine folk North and South of the border. We really enjoyed every moment of it Gene, and look forward to more of the same next year. Margaret Mc Stay
