  2. Questing bucks and single does but no real chasing since the one shot earlier in the month. Cold nth winds and drizzle not helped though. We have has some luck though haveing one buck missed twice from a stationary combine (parked up) and 3 foxes shot in 2 days as well as 2 four pointers. The one this morning was shot after seeing him near a doe box we stalked to the box and waited after the calling did nowt. 20 mins later out he came on a mission. It was now 9.45 am so late to be active. yesterdays buck. to dark to film last nights foxes could only see them in the zeiss binos and s
  3. Its been a fair while since I was last able to visit a small patch of permission in Dorset and I've been looking forward to it for ages. I was lait arriving on Friday as I got stuck behind one of those annoying people who insists on driving at 55mph so literally dropped my stuff off at my relatives where I was staying and set out arriving for the last hour of light. Several sika hinds with yound at foot were seen on the way to the highseat with the inevitable shrill warning cries been shouted before hightailing it away. Up in the seat I let nature settle for a few minutes before starting calli
  4. First of all I would like to say a massive thanks to my mate who kindly took me under his wing and has taken me out a number of times to help me get my first buck and intro into deerstalking. Hopefully he has not downed all the whiskey I gave this morning and is still sober enough to read this post.....cheers mate. We headed out just after 5am and tried walking a few different spots using the butollo caller to see if we could get anything to appear. We had stalked a dozen or so fields without any sign of a buck at all. Finally at about 8am we arrived at a nice spot in a wheat field tha
  5. Friday evening saw me trying to get to grips with a buck that normally resides over the boundary ,the other side of a small stream on a lush banking of meadow grasses never cut .This place is just outside of town so not far to go and as i was a bit late getting out i made the decision to try for him here.Ive seen him my side on numerous occasions but either unsafe or bumped only to jump the stream and away .I set up on sticks right on the boundary overlooking the neighbours fields and on the side of the stream with barrel pointing back to my permission .I started calling as soon as i was in p
  6. I am not a trophy hunter and generally don't get many like this boy anyway. As a matter of interest does anyone know about BASC/BDS/etc measuring service, what sort of money are we talking and do you think this may make it at all. Cheers
  7. Ria look proud of her rutting bucks in the bag.
  8. Down at Martins ground Wednesday evening ,on one of his patches that i love to be at .Hilly ground with a dingle below, horse shoed into the valley side.Martin had the cam corder so no rifle for him and he lead the way through this treelined dell .We bumped a doe early on that hung around so i had a peep to see if she had a buck in tow but all i called was a fox that eventually got chsaed away by the doe and that was that .Into the dell and we decided to wait awhile under a hawthorn bush as we could see a pair of does in the distance .Just got settled when Martin accidently sat on his buttalo
  9. If you could have your choice of breed for stalking deer what would you choose and why? I have only very recently taken up stalking and I am intrigued by the ability of deer dogs for pointing etc.
  10. Very Protective Doe A friend of mine was out walking his dog the other week and from nowwhere came a doe charging and trying to butt his dog. As you can see from the video captured by using his phone ( which i apoligise is not the best quality) when some deer have got young they can be very protective.
  11. Tuesday evening saw me at a place that is surrounded by some of the best roe habitat ive seen. The farm i have is pure grassland but they do come in to feed to make a change from nearby crops .The stalking is very much dictated by the movement of cattle here and this time of year can be a total waste of time with cattle allowed the full run of the 180 acres.Tuesday however saw the milking herd in the first two fields and only young heifers in one more ,leaving the far grounds to recover from the recent hay cutting .The grass is now lush again and i hoped to call a buck that id seen before the c
  12. As some will know I have cut back on the stalking now for 2 weeks to ready my shoot for the poults.(they start arriving tomorrow). Been riding around during the day and waiting for foxes in the mornings and evenings. Seeing many bucks now just walking about at any time of day, crossing wheat fields and showing the does some interest. There is something stirring i'm sure. Also suddenly there are more of last years bucks about, bucks which I have never seen. Due partly I think to the rape getting swathed. They will be flat out combining at the weekend/ next week, if the weather is warm. I
  13. this wee fella was standing in the pissing rain with a doe and 2 kids this morning, had seen him last saturday running up and down a fence line sniffing and getting all hot and botherd so me and my mate just decided to watch him till he walked off, at one point he was standing no more than 40 yds infront of us but let him off that day
  14. Been absent for a while with tinterweb issues but thought I'd share this all the same. FoxDropper and I popped out for one evening after work a buck at a spot he'd seen two cull animals a week or so previous. As seems to be the case at this time of year plans are hatched and assumptions made only to turn up and find the fields cut and re-think is in order. Fortunately thick Wiltshire hedge's and a couple of untouched fringe fields made a look around well worth a go. It didn't take long to spot a deer which FD pointed out tucked into the long grass verge under the hedge on the other side of
  15. just come back from stalking on the west coast of scot seen a roe buck chasing a doe around for over an hr (before i shot him) just wondered if anyone else has seen rutting as early as this??
  16. Hello forumites A friend is upgrading some larder items and is looking for gambrels and s- hooks. Seem heavily price for what they are in the places he's looked so far so I was wondering who or where supplies the best value for money gambrels at present and what is the handiest size for Roe deer? Ta
  17. Well had another couple of bucks booked with john yesterday evening and this morning. Anyway we went up to his land at pickering last night and sat up looking over a bit of freshly cut silage to no avail. There was one roe that we thought was a doe but john wasn't 100% sure as although it had not antlers it looked to potentially have predicels (spelling?) but it never presented a shot so no matter anyway. However it was a very late night as we had to get back to johns then I had to get home from there and I wasn't home until 12.10 and was going to be up at 3 and my head didn't hit the pil
  18. the first a fox seen on saturday morning. Whilst out on saturday morning on a wild english partridge shoot up on the yorkshire wolds we saw this fellow catching a few rays. *cool* There was no chance of closing the distance so the client was urged to have a go off the sticks (stood only chance to see over the thick hedge). We waited for well over 4 minutes for the fox to turn broadside, he didn't and the client was tiring holding his aim so the choice was made to shoot after a quick rest from the aim when the fox turned slightly to allow for the biggest target available. It was a
  19. I decided on a visit to a place that rarely holds a good head ,it being a main dog walking area for a nearby town but this evening i got lucky .The deer are notoriously hard to stalk as they get the runaround from anyone with the right dog if you know what i mean .I clocked a buck and doe at a good range and had plenty of time to plan a stalk as they looked content to browse the grasses in the, as yet uncut field .Crawling through waist high grass with only the occasional glimpse of your quarry is one of the things i enjoy ,the sun was shining ,butterflies flitted and the birds sang .Lowering
  20. Ah its roe buck time again and the crops are up meaning neck shots off the sticks. So my average will drop now. This is shown by kind permission of the client who was worried the does would discover us. After looking down his scope at the deer making there way towards us it got to much and the fever kicked in. You will see the doe who is nearer jump and he thought they were much closer from the view in the scope. the buck was actually about 85m's and his neck was just creased cutting hair. it was finally shot at about 50m's. the gun is an UN-moderated .308. The
  21. Well after two failed attempts to bag a buck for my birthday in the past week (once with john and once else where) I finally got lucky today. It wasn't that promising a start as just as i arrived at johns the winds that were forecast and had been all to present last night picked up out of nowhere. With a quick change of plans we headed off to a bit of ground closer to johns that would be a little more sheltered than was planned. We arrived at the ground and left the truck and proceeded to stalk an area where john had seen a couple of bucks in the last week. The plan was to have a look
