  3. Preparations are well under way for Ballywalter with the House and grounds in great order. This is one of the few Game Fairs anywhere where the house, lawns and yard are part of the fair. To my mind this is what a Game Fair venue should look like with country sports people of all ages, classes and creeds coming together to celebrate our great sporting history and traditions. Falconry , game displays on the front lawn, Fly casting on the lower lawn , vintage cars and carriages outside the house and the Flavour Food Festival in the yard. Also in the yard is a kids painting area and a huge display of rabbits, guinea pigs and fowl of all sorts and music by 'Risin Stour' The competitions have all excellent prize funds and there is an excellent range of stands which we cut off when we had a few more than our target of 150. In fact we are currently at just under 160 with several being turned away for the last three weeks. No one should be disappointed by the range of stands and some of the bargains on offer! Our web site is now fully up to date - we don't advertise attractions unless we are sure they are going to be there. And our prize structure is also now complete and published on the site. There is a free downloadable and printable programme but we also have these available at the gates. The grounds are in superb order and the lurcher track has been rollled. FINALLY DON'T FORGET Anyone purchasing an adult ticket at Ballywalter qualifies for ADMISSION to Shanes for just £5 and to Birr for just €5. A family purchasing a ticket at Ballywalter for £25 qualifies for admission to Shanes for just £10 and Birr for €15. AND the Terrier & Lurcher Show starts at 11.00am SHARP on Sunday 6th MAy FOLLOWED by the racing. Only terrier & whippet main arena displays on SATURDAY. Hope to see many of you there Albert J

  8. Dunsilly Kennels yesterday Sunday, was alive with the sound of showing and racing Whippets, parents and children, Terrier and Lurcher men who came as spectators to show their support , as the first Sporting Whippet Club NI Show of the year got under way. The weather held out all day with no rain, but a bitterly cold wind kept everyone happed up with a few layers of clothing. Janet and her committee, as usual did a superb job, with the showing and racing conducted with impeccable organisation. It was so nice yesterday to see so many non committee members lending a hand, and everybody so willing to help out. That’s what I call good sportsmanship. John and myself done the gate, and it was nice to have the chance to meet so many people personally, both regular show goers, and quite a few new faces. There was a very big turnout of Whippets yesterday at this show. The grading started at 12.30, and before the showing commenced, all Whippet owners knew what grading their dogs would race in after the showing, for example A/B/or C grade. All top class Whippet there yesterday both in the showing and the racing. The showing started immediately after the grading. Children’s Handling 1st – Turlough O’Hagan handling Katie 2nd – Jamie Doherty handling Juke 3rd – Jay Fyffe handling Bullet Kiddy Slip 1st – Turlough O’Hagan 2nd – Jamie Doherty 3rd – Graham Meek (Jnr) These little fellows were so proud of their winnings. It always tuggs at my heart strings being a mother myself , when I see all children winning and participating at these shows. Somehow, one gets a sense of pride and accomplishment, just to see the smile on their little faces when they run to their parents with their prizes. All trophies were going into school today I am told. Thurlough OHagan, Jamie Doherty, Jay fyffe, and Graham Meek (Jun ) a big congratulations, and a big congratulations to all the other children who took part in the showing and slipping. You are all winners and the sports men and women of the future. It is great to give these children an interest in life that they enjoy and can carry on through to their children. Some sleepy heads last night. We are due our first grandchild on the 10th June please god, and we will be very proud grandparents. Cant wait. Whippet 1st – Anne Forsythe with Poppy 2nd – Michael Quinn with Molly 3rd – John Mc Stay with Darcy Whippet Dog 1st – David Best with Harley 2nd – Martin Doherty with Juke 3rd – Janet Duke with Finlay Whippet Bitch 1st – Brendan O’Hara with Cody 2nd – David Best with Penny 3rd – Graham Meek with Meg Working Whippet 1st – Kieran Young with Lucy 2nd – John Shaw with Billy 3rd – Phillipa Robinson with Dochas Veteran Whippet 1st – Tracy Gill with Tia Best In Show – Brendan O’Hara with Cody Reserve Best In Show – Anne Forsythe with Poppy Members Class Winner - Tracy Gill with Ash *Congratulations to Brendan O Hara for winning Best in Show, and to Ann Forsythe for winning Reserve Best in Show. A great achievement for you both. Racing Results Grade ‘A’ Winner – Sox (Kirsty Harpur) Reserve – Blue ( Michael Quinn) Grade ‘B’ Winner – Smokey (Pearse O’Hagan) Reserve – Rio (Patsy McCoy) Grade ‘C’ Winner – Brock (Pearse O’Hagan) Reserve – Obe (Gary Kane) *A Great win Kirsty and Pearse, the first of much Silverware to come your way this year. And Congratulations to all the class winners. Well deserved winners. Finally, the judge on the day Linda Mc Donald did a great job, with Santas little helper Michelle Rafferty, was there by her side to record all our winnings. Well done girls, not an easy task. Thanks to Patsy Mc Coy , Mickey Quinn , Graham Meek, Janet Duke and Kieran Young who done a magnificent job on the Lure and Racing. Ran without a hitch. To Victor Mc Donald for the venue, may thanks. The raffle took place before end of show. it certainly generated a lot of excitement and fun, and a lot of happy campers when their ticket came up trumphs. Bluebell was there with her camera taking photographs of all that passed her way. Billy Harpur was there also clicking away at the side of the ring. Between both of them, there will be some cracking photographs of the day. Many thanks for that. The Silver Shadow catering van was on site on the day. They produced some lovely food for all the hungry show people old and young. This was a first, but I am assured they will be there for the rest of the season. Keep up the good work. I must say I thoroughly enjoyed the day, and look forward to the next Whippet Show on the 27th May 2012. See you all there. Anybody requiring a catering van at their events, you can contact : Silver Shadow Catering at 07821 710250 or email @darrinmillar@yahoo.co.uk Margaret Mc Stay

  14. Due to a helpful suggestion that our Great Game Fairs of Ireland appeared to have focused more on lurchers than terriers with our prestigious Master Mc Grath Challenge, Five Nations International Lurcher Championships and the Philip Lawton's Directors Challenge for Novice Dogs - we have acquired two prestigious UK terrier qualifiers for Ballywalter and Shanes Castle Fairs. AND of course our terrier prizes at Ballywalter are unrivalled in Ireland except for Shanes Castle and Birr Castle events. The qualifier is for the National Working Terrier Federation Championship 2012 This year’s Championship Show will be held at the ever popular Warwickshire & West Midlands Game Fair, at its NEW VENUE of Arbury Hall, Arbury Park, Nuneaton, Warwickshire, CV10 7P on Bank Both Champion and Reserve Champion from Ballywalter and Shanes Castle qualify for this final

  19. The day commenced at beautiful Ballywalter House, Co Down, the venue for the launch of the “ Ballywalter Game & Country Living Fair “ 2012, to be held on 5th and 6th May at Ballywalter Park. This promises to be a great 2 day Game and Country Fair, with carriages, vintage vehicles, costumed players, traditional falconry, vintage angling, muzzle loading shooting, Victorian archery displays, Top Dog show and Racing, and Flavour Magazine Fine Food Festival. The Food Festival, based in the Victorian courtyard at Ballywalter, will bring together an eclectic mix of producers from the region, allowing visitors to sample and buy some of the finest food and drink available in Ireland. These will be from handmade preserves and local whiskey to artisan cheese and savoury salads. Of course the fair will step forward as well as back with some great up to date attractions including top game fair competitions and a wealth of other displays and exhibits. The beautiful surroundings of Ballywalter Park, and continual hum of the wonderful wild life it shelters in its many trees and shrubs, enhanced the enjoyment of to day. The sun shone in abundance, and the cameras were continually clicking, making sure every moment was captured as it happened. I met many friends and acquaintances from the Canine fraternity, along with their beautiful Canine companions and also made some new friends from other Country sporting events. May I take this opportunity of thanking Lord and Lady Dunleath & “The Directors of the Great Game Fairs of Ireland “ Especially Albert J & Irene Titterington for the beautiful lunch after the photo shoot in the “Wildfowler Inn “ Greyabbey. It was so much appreciated by all. Ballywalter Game & Country living Fair on the 5th & 6th of May will be two great days out for the whole family with something for everybody. Pencil these dates into your dairy now, and come along to what promises to be two great family days out. Hope to see you all there. Margaret Mc Stay .
  20. The Orchard County was buzzing with laughter and excitement yesterday, as the first dog show of the year took place at Annaghmore Raceway. This show was organised for Charity and run by Fiona Devlin right in the heart of apple country. With the beauty of the countryside, good company, and the sun shinning what more could we ask for on a great family day out. This was one of the largest Dog shows I have see in a very long time, and went without a hiccup. There were doggie men and women from North and South of the border all with two and three dogs in their trailer. Fiona your show was a real credit to you, and a roaring success. The good news is Fionas Charity Dog Show raised £715 for Cancer Charity after expenses. Look how much comfort that can give a person during treatment or in the last days of their life here on this earth. Many Many thanks to every one of you who attended this show, You all contributed to this very needy cause, and of this we are all truly grateful. None of us know what tomorrow will bring. Its nice to know that there are people standing in the wings to help us out when we need it.. Thanks again for your generosity. The Racing commenced at 1.30, There were 90 entries for the racing at this show. This was the largest amount of dogs racing that I have ever seen at any of the shows I have been at, and I am going to shows a very long time, to long to remember.
