    HAPPY CHRISTMAS

A VERY HAPPY CHRISTMAS FROM JOHN AND MYSELF, TO ALL OUR FRIENDS NORTH AND SOUTH OF THE BORDER AND FURTHER AFIELD. MARGARET AND JOHN MC STAY
  10. Dessie Mackins Christmas Dog Show Saturday 16th December 17 Bannville House Hotel is set in 13 Acres of mature woodland on the Lurgan Road, 3 miles from Banbridge, and deep in the heart of the County Down countryside. These beautiful surroundings was the venue for Dessie Mackins annual Christmas Dog show Saturday 16thDecember 17. Although it was cold Christmassy weather, this did not dampen the spirits of the good men and women of the canine world, all out for a good days enjoyment and festivities, and were not disappointed. I can honestly say, being at all Dessies Christmas shows over the years, this years show was the biggest turnout so far. From mid morning cars, vans, and trailers were arriving, all loaded up with their prized canine friends. This Christmas show is a welcome break from the trials and tribulations of Christmas shopping and all the razzmatazz that goes with the festive season and a gift at this time of year. As we all know Christmas can be a very sad and lonesome time, full of memories of yester year. This annual doggie day out before Christmas lifts this mantle, brings cheer in abundance, and helps us to leave our cares and troubles behind, and learn to smile again, if only for a day. Showing commenced at approximately 1.30. Here are the Overall Results from the Show Childrens Handling Class 1/ Chelsea Rafferty with Rosie 2/ Logan Hepburn with Joe 3/ Lewis Johnstone Congratulations to the winners and all the children who took part. Champion Puppy Lisa Hanratty with Dakota Reserve Carol Brown with Portia Champion Whippet Janet Duke with Oscar Reserve Leeroy Mc Cullough with Tizer Champion Lurcher Lisa Beggs with Cirez Reserve Lisa Beggs with Joker Champion Bull Cross James Woods with Buster Reserve Mickey Quinn with Hoss Champion Terrier Terry Crossen with Teddy Reserve Scott Connolly with Fonzy Plummers Sam White with Viper Reserve Sam White with Finn Champion Strong Dog Ethen Barry with Sully Stephen Mc Polin with Rebel Overall Show Champion of Champions Janet Duke with Oscar Reserve Overall Champion Lisa Beggs with Cirez Congratulations to Janet and Lisa, two very worthy winners, and also a big congratulations to all the other winners. It was nice to see the 1st Bull Cross Championship in action at this show on Saturday. There was a very big class of Bull Cross in the ring, and what better man to judge this class than Albertj Titterington, Director of the Great Game Fairs of Ireland. James Woods was one proud man going home with his dog Buster winning this prestigious championship, as was Mickey Quinn with his dog Hoss taking reserve Champion. Dessie always has surprise presentations up his sleeve on Christmas show day, and this year was no exception. The first accolade on Dessies list this year was for Dog of the Year and this award went to a well deserved winner Mrs Janet Duke and her top class Whippet Oscar. Oscar owes Janet nothing, and has won many Champion of Champions down through the years and added many more to his list in 2017. I am sure the Whippets were all drunk on Saturday night, celebrating the bosses achievement. Congratulations to Janet and Oscar. Next on the list was Country Sports Personalities of 2017. This Accolade was awarded to Tom Barry and myself for our contribution to Country Sports, North and South of the border, with photography, write ups, shows, show advertisements, and providing show and Game Fair information on the Hunting Life, Face Book, and Irish Country Sports and Country Life Magazine. Many thanks Dessie for thinking so highly of Tom and myself. And Finally, may I take this opportunity to thank the judges on the day. Whippets - Sharon Martin Eames Terriers/Strong Dogs – Hannah Heinonen Lurchers – Chontelle Mc Meekin Childrens Handling Class – Margaret Mc Stay Bull Cross Championship – Albertj Titterington Your judgement was fair, and carried out meticulously. Thank you for a job well done. Many thanks to Albertj Titterington and Great Game Fairs of Ireland for their generous sponsorship for this show. A very Happy Christmas to Albert, Irene and Co Directors and I look forward to working with you all again in 2018. And Finally, Finally, may I take this moment especially to thank Dessie Mackin for putting on another brilliant show despite the fact tragedy hit his family during the year, by the passing of his beloved son Darren. Dessie you rallied on with a heavy heart to make this day enjoyable for everybody and was an over whelming success. Darren will walk by your side every day of your life in every road you go down. Dessie, there are brighter days ahead, and we wish you and your family good health and happiness for 2018. From myself and John, I would like to wish all Canine folk and their families, Hunters, and lampers, North and South of the border and further afield, A Very Happy and Prosperous New Year, and I look forward to meeting up with you all again, god willing in 2018. 12. Many will have heard that the IRISH GAME & COUNTRY FAIR which has been staged at BIRR CASTLE, Co OFFALY for the last 10 years will be moving location. The move has been slightly complicated by the news that the POPE and possibly the QUEEN will be coming to Ireland on our traditional date of the end of August. HOWEVER we are happy to announce our plans to make our 40th ANNIVERSARY FAIR at SHANES CASTLE, ANTRIM on the 23rd/24th JUNE 2018, the biggest and best GAME FAIR ever seen in IRELAND. An announcement will be made about the date and venue of the ROI fair early in January. In the meantime a statement from our Communications Director : FULL SPEED AHEAD FOR 40TH ‘RUBY ANNIVERSARY EVENT AT SHANES CASTLE NO MORE GAME FAIRS AT BIRR CASTLE ANNOUNCEMENT SOON ON NEW LOCATION FOR IRISH GAME & COUNTRY FAIR Sadness and excitement mark the news this week for Game Fairs South and North. First, news came that there would be no more game fairs at Birr Castle. Ten largely happy and productive years with wonderful help and support from the local community were to an end with unworkable constraints being imposed on the Fair resulting in a loss of car parking and clay shooting But it’s not all bad news as there will be exciting revelations in January, when the new location and format for the ROI Game Fair is announced. More exciting good news is promised too, when Northern Ireland’s leading Shanes Castle Game Fair hits the headlines with details of its hugely anticipated 40th ‘Ruby’ Anniversary event at Shanes Castle 2018. UNWORKABLE ESTATE CONSTRAINTS FORCE GAME FAIR MOVE Lengthy discussions began on 8th September with the Birr Castle management bodies over potential additional constraints and working with one of the bodies involved in the management the event still looked ‘dooable.’ But more constraints followed from the second management body, the OT Trust , the first blow being their refusal to allow access to Mount Palmer, one of the event’s two main access points and the only car parking available on site. This was also the site for terriers & lurchers and clay pigeon shooting at the fair! But even worse, this management group then decided to rule out clay pigeon shooting anywhere on the estate! It is an indisputable fact that clay shooting is an integral part of all game fairs and a real highlight for thousands of enthusiasts but this was of no consequence it seemed, despite us fighting to retain clayshooting at the Fair. The shoot at Birr had a prize structure quite unrivalled in Ireland. It was one of the highlights of the fair, attracting over 1500 competitors from all over Ireland and the UK. It was organised effectively and ‘professionally’ as a club fund raiser by local sporting interests, who are quite devastated by the estate’s decision. We all worked hard to reduce any environmental impact to the estate and the ‘cleanup’ of the site was second to none. We cannot understand why part of the estate’s management would seek to impose this quite frankly unworkable constraint especially as we had suggested solutions to any potential problems with the shoot. The decision appeared to be more of a policy decision as game shooting ceased on the estate in 2016. Tourism bodies have assessed that the Birr Castle Fair makes an economic contribution of over €500,000 to the area. We also invested around an additional €200,000 per year, and involved many local groups, businesses and individuals in delivering the fair. Sadly, the reluctant decision to move fair moving outside the locality will result in a huge economic blow to the local economy. As well, much positive social, tourism and promotional impact will be lost. As the Fairs’s organisers, we have always spoken of the warm welcome afforded to ourselves and visitors from all over Ireland, the UK and further afield, by the people of Birr and County Offaly. Many of these visitors book their accommodation a year in advance and will be devastated by the unfortunate news but we have done all we could to retain the event at Birr Castle. Our thanks also go Mid Ireland Tourism, with whom we worked closely, and to all of the accommodation providers, shop keepers and others who made the event a really special one for visitors. An excellent working relationship was enjoyed too with Lord and Lady Rosse, our most gracious hosts, and the estate staff with whom we all worked to deliver the fair with minimal impact on the whole estate. NEW CHAPTER OPENING FOR ROI GAME & COUNTRY FAIR Regarding our next ROI event, our organising team and one its new partners have already visited several sites during October and November and are close to finalising a new ‘home’ for the event. An announcement will be made in January 2018 when outline plans have been completed which will see the successful move to an exciting new location 40TH ANNIVERSARY ‘RUBY’ FAIR AT SHANES CASTLE 23rd& 24th June 2018 A tight lid is being kept on exactly what will be on offer to celebrate the milestone of 40 years of game fairs by the Shanes castle organising team. All the organisers will say is that it will be ‘unmatched in the history of game fairs in this country.’ I will be bringing the very latest information to you just as soon as possible. Meanwhile keep up to date on all the game fair news by tuning in to Facebook and watch the news sections of Irish Country Sports & Country Life magazine. 19. The Combined Clubs Charity Dog Show Sunday 3rd September 17 at Annaghmore Raceway, Annaghmore, Co Armagh Deep in the heart of Orchard County, is the now famous Annaghmore Raceway, with its fine landscapes and magnificent Pony and Jib race track. It was a previlege to have this fine venue for the Combined Clubs annual Charity Dog Show Sunday 3rd September 17. With the beauty of the countryside and good company, what more could we ask for, and a great family day out. The weather could have been better, with the odd shower of rain, but this did not dampen the spirits of the good Canine men and women of the Doggie world. As the cars and trailers arrived, it was evident the popularity of this annual Charity show, and by noon all parking places were full. A nice surprise on the day was that the Combined Clubs had acquired a field adjacent to the race track where the show rings were, and decided to have simulated racing in there. This brought a great buzz of excitement, with Janet Dukes winning dog Maeve romping home to victory to take the prize for the Overall Simulated Race. What a proud owner, and Maeve was in top form and rearing to go. Very soon it was raffle time, and it was my lucky day with winning 3 prizes in the raffle. John was none too pleased, as he is the one who wins all in our family. There was a picture and no sound for a while, but all was well later. Time passes so quickly, and very soon it was show time. Here are the Results of the Showing. Overall Champion Terrier Janet Duke with Frankie Reserve Eamo Mc Erlean with Spooky Overall Champion Lurcher Mickey Quinn with Hoss Reserve Rick Hepburn with Storm Overall Champion Whippet Dean Mc Straw with Papps Reserve Rick Hepburn with Kerry Overall Champion Strong Dog Davy Boyd with Buck Alec Reserve Kieran O Neill with Roco Overall Champion and Best in Show Mickey Quinn with Hoss Reserve Davy Boyd with Buck Alec A Big Congratulations to all above winners, and Good luck to the qualifiers for the Five Nations Championships 2018. And Finally, may I take this opportunity to thank the Judges at this Charity Show. Lurchers and Whippets, Sammy Shaw/Strong Dogs, John Barry/Terriers Paul Mc Alinden. Judging is not an easy Job, but you carried out your remit firm but fair. I took quite a lot of Photographs myself , and are on my Face Book time line at the moment. A special word of thanks to the owner of Annaghmore Raceway Clive Richardson for allowing the club the use of this magnificent venue for this event. If it were not for you Clive this event would not be happening. For that we are truly grateful. And Finally, Finally, many thanks to Tom Barry, Santas little helper Ethan Barry, and the Combined Clubs team for another great Dog Show. A lot of hard work went into organising this event, and Tom it was a credit to you and your organisational skills. You pulled out all the stops, and made the whole event a roaring success. As Sundays show was for charity and in aid of Alzheimers, hopefully the shows donation will help in some small way, to give comfort to people during treatment, or help to care for them in the last days of their life here on this earth. Remember your were part of this, and a big thank you to everyone who contributed in any way or attended the show. Alzheimers is a very needy cause, and can attack the system at any age. Nobody knows what tomorrow will bring, and it is nice to know that there are people waiting in the wings to help us out in our hour of need. I am told from a very reliable source, that Mr Red is back from his summer holidays. Well its that time of year when I will have to gather my Canine friends together and go and visit him. Thanks again to all for your generosity, and God willing we will have another Charity Dog Show again in 2018. Margaret Mc Stay

  24. The Irish Game and Country Fair at Birr Castle, Sunday 27th August 17 Written on the menu board in my mind for the past couple of weeks was a road trip to Birr Castle Irish Game Fair. On Sunday the 27th August, I was able to mark it off as done, for overnight it became a reality, and rolled on into the real world. Within a hares breath we were on our way down the motorway in convoy fine and early, to this beautiful part of “Gods plan of Nature” in the County Offaly countryside. Birr Castle is a very impressive Castle situated on 1200 acres of walled estate in the Magical Midlands of Ireland. With its extensive 17th century parkland, gardens, lakes, rivers, and famous herbaceous borders, this was the magnificent venue for this years Great Game Fairs of Ireland. We arrived at Birr Castle at 9.30am, parked up, exercised the dogs, and headed up for our annual browse around the Game Fair and its many attractions. I will have to say this years Game Fair was bigger and better than any other year I have been to Birr Castle, and I have been to many. The weather was brilliant, the crowds were overflowing, the atmosphere was electric, and as they say in the South of Ireland, the craic was mighty. As I moved around the Game Fair I met up with some old friends, but also made some new ones. Along the way I got speaking to a very nice lady from County Limerick who was involved with the Terrier and Lurchers at Adair Game Fair, County Limerick for 19 years. What a learned lady, and so interesting to speak to. It was nice to reminisce with someone who has been there and done it all. You know who you are and it was an education and a pleasure speaking to you. Jill and Paul Pringle were out in force on the Great Game Fairs of Ireland stand, speaking to the many visitors who had come to the Game Fair from Ireland, from England, Scotland, Wales, Canada, Germany and further afield. What a lovely couple. They were very popular on this stand and phenomenal interest was shown in The Irish Country Sports and Country life Magazine. No doubt Jill and Paul made sure every visitor to the stand took a free copy away with them. It was time for some retail therapy, so our first stop was The Edinburgh Clothing Company, and we were not disappointed. Paul Fielding was on the stand, and as usual with his very welcoming and gentlemanly ways. No doubt I did not leave empty handed, and got a good bargain. We stopped off at the main Arena to watch Derek O Byrne White strut his stuff, and what an entertaining event that was. If only I could line dance like that. Brilliant workmanship and entertainment Derek with your horses, and the line dancing ladies were magnificent. Birr Castle would not be Birr Castle without paying a visit to my good friend Stephen Smith at the Barbour Stand. No matter when I meet this man he is like a ray of sunshine and a great salesman. I can honestly say Stephen has the best range of Barbour Clothing in Ireland and very easy to deal with. Time was catching up on us, and very soon it was time to head back to the Dog Show Arena, for a full programme of showing and racing, and the big events of the day, the Prestigious Mick The Miller racing Championship. Here are the Showing and Racing Results: Overall Champion Whippet Barry Chambers with Ruby Reserve Karen Cummins with Maisie Overall Champion Lurcher Tricia Donagh with Chunk Reserve Mikie Lyons with Sky Overall Champion Terrier Eamo Mc Erlean with Spooky Reserve John Keane with Ted Overall Champion and Best in Show Eamo Mc Erlean with Spooky Reserve Tricia Donagh with Chunk 3rd Barry Chambers with Ruby Overall Puppy Champion Dawn Jones with Thor Reserve Fiona Devlin with Musty ***Racing Results The Mick The Miller All Ireland Racing Championship 1/Ned Kane with Fonk 2/Chris Canavan with Maggie Directors Challenge 1/ James Mc Guinness with Snare 2/ Nicky Smith with Buster Under 21 Mal Mc Fall with We Scared Under 23 Mal Mc Fall with Frozen Scared Over 23 Stephanie O Connor with Orla Bull Cross Jed Donagh with Chunk Whippets Charlene Rafferty with Zio Terriers Jed Donagh with Faye A Big Congratulations to all the above worthy winners At 5.30pm it was time to head up to the main arena for the historic 5 Nations Lurcher Championship. This is now an annual event at Birr Castle and generates a great buzz of excitement around the main Arena. While the judging was taking place, Stephen Mc Gonigle mingled with the good canine people around the arena with his PA System in tow, and had some great banter and chat with like minded people. Albertj Titterington drove up alongside the main arena in his bat mobile, and announced that there were two very important presentations to be made before the judging ended. At this point Kieran Young announced the winner of the Colette Gannon perpetual Cup for ”Country Sport Persons of the Year” 2017 won by an over whelming popular vote. This accolade went to Tricia and Jed Donagh, and what a well deserved win Tricia and Jed, and a glowing tribute to the memory of Collette. I have no doubt this beautiful treasure will take pride of place on the mantelpiece in the Donagh home to August 2018. Next award was made by Mr Albertj Titterington, to Alan Crosbie for his lifetime contribution to Country Sports and his brilliant Charity contribution from the proceeds of his Dog Show in 2017. Well done Alan and well deserved. Next on the menu and concluding a wonderful day at Birr Castle Game Fair was the results of the 5 Nations Lurcher Championship called out by Stephen Mc Gonigle as Follows: ***And Now For The Big One/ Five Nations Champion Lurcher went to:*** Jed Donagh with Chunk Reserve Pat Dunphy with George A Big Congratulations to both men and well done. And Finally, there is one very special friend I would like to thank for escorting myself and my weary feet back up to my car for my journey back home up north. Yes it is you Finbarr Spain a lovely gentleman and his dog Rooney. Finbarr pulled up beside me in his van as I was leaving the main arena, and offered me a lift back up to my car. You were my guardian angel Finbarr, as my body was wearing low after walking around the rings all day. Many thanks for that. Who wants Alberts bat mobile, when I have my own private transporter. As usual the Roscrea team ran the show like clockwork. What a brilliantly efficient crew of people. Shane Lee, you and your team Rose and Niamh Troy, and other names I do not know, carried out your duties with sheer grit and determination and in a very professional manner, and many thanks for that. The Judges on the day were first class. Rose Mc Coy Pets/Tracy Crosbie Whippets/Lurchers Nigel Quinn/Terriers John Hendrix. Five Nations Judges : Kieran Young/Alan Crosbie/Donal Smith. A job well done and carried out to perfection. And Finally, Finally, I always leave the best to last. This accolade goes out to Albertj Titterington and his lovely wife Irene, and their Co Directors for a great weekend in Birr Castle. Albertj without you and your brilliant team this would not be possible .So many of our Canine folk look forward through the window of Country Sports, to your 2 Great Game Fair events of the year at Shanes Castle, and Birr Castle. As we are approaching the dark cold days and long nights of winter, when the snow hits the window, we will gather round the fire, and chat about our moments of glory and the craic we had at your Game Fairs, and all the other Dog shows up and down the country, who also gave us so much joy and entertainment during the year. Albert, you are Simply the Best, and will always be “King Of The Castle.” May Irene and yourself have good health and happiness and continue to run your top Game Fairs for many years to come. Albert you do so much for and contribute to Country Sports, and work so hard behind the scenes to make things happen, we are truly grateful. Thanks for all the lovely memories of 2017, and look forward to seeing you again in 2018 God willing. ***All the Photographs of Birr Castle are on my Facebook Timeline at the moment and many more from shows through out the year.*** Margaret Mc Stay
