  6. DWTC Dog Show and Race day at Sandy Heaks Modern farm in Scarva Sunday 13th May 18 Up bright and early Sunday morning with the “The Dog Chorus “ howling sweet music in our ears, whilst making sure the whole neighborhood was aware, it was their day out at the annual DWTC Dog Show and Race day at Sandy Heaks Modern farm in Scarva, Co Down As we arrived at the venue, we were enchanted by the beauty of this County Down country side. The field was in mint condition with show rings and race course ready to go, to host another days enjoyment at this now superb popular venue. There was an exceptionally large turnout of Whippets, Lurchers, Terriers and Strong dogs, backed up with glorious sunshine for most of the day. There was a lovely atmosphere, with many country sportsmen and women, parents and children, all enjoying themselves in the summer sunshine. You could buy dog meal, dog rugs, collars mussels and leads, burgers and minerals at the many stands situated around the field. Very soon it was Raffle time, and you could taste the buzz of excitement in the air around Scarva. The raffle has now become a very important part of our shows and brings out the gambler in most of us. As the saying goes, the craic was mighty. As this show was a Master Mc Grath and Mick the Miller qualifier, all dogs were in top condition and all rearing to have a go at these two prestigious events. Each year the DWTC goes from strength to strength and this year was no different. Time flies by so quick when you are having fun, and very soon it was Showing and Racing Time. The showing kicked off with the childrens handling class. I was given the honour of judging this class, and what a class that was. These young handlers are our sportsmen and women of tomorrow, and as usual all well versed in handling their faithful canine friends. In my eyes you were all winners on the day. Here are the Showing and Racing results. Hope I have got them all right. 15. Combined Clubs Dog Show and Race Day at Annaghmore Race Track Sunday 29th April 18. As I drew back the curtains on a sunny April morning, my inner thoughts ran riot with my brain thinking of the tasks that lay ahead of me on this fine spring day. My biological clock was telling me Sunday 29th April had arrived bright and early and was the day for the Combined Clubs Dog Show and Raceday in Annaghmore. As we drove off from home with dogs in toe enroute to the show, one could see without doubt why this beautiful countryside is called the Orchard County. Bramley Apple Orchards line the quiet country roads and are in full bloom at this time of year, and lead down to Annaghmore Racetrack and our Dog Show venue for the day. As it was a beautiful day, with the sun shining continuously, families and country sportsmen and women came out in their droves. By 12 noon the field was full to capacity with every breed of dog you could name. As I walked around the field, it was nice to talk to so many old friends and also make some new ones. On my travels I met up with John Keane and his mate Gerry, who travelled all the way from Sixmilebridge, in County Clare with their winning terriers. Also, all the way from Carlow were the McGrath brothers, Michael/Jack and Stephen. These are all great guys with an over whelming love of their dogs and a keen interest in country sports. Time passes so quickly when you are enjoying yourself, and it was soon time for the Racing and Showing to start. Here are the Showing Results. But everything went like clockwork on the day, well organised, and a credit to the Club. To the Combined Clubs team we all enjoyed ourselves down there at Annaghmore Race Track on Sunday, and I am looking forward to more of the same shortly. Margaret Mc Stay

  18. The Laois Lurcher/Terrier/Whippet Club first Annual Charity Dog Show and Race Day which took place Sunday 22nd April 18. As we closed the gates on the hunting fields for another year, and dusted off the forty shades of winter, and as the dawn chorus were chanting their versus , we started winging our way to the start of another summer salsa of canine shows, race days and Game Fair dates for 2018. As the chimes of the mobile rang out loud and clear at 4.30am, transmitting the time to get up and get on the road and head for Abbeyleix. Bleary eyed with feet on the floor, dogs in the trailer, and car packed, we were soon off down the motorway to Laois Lurcher, Whippet and Terrier Charity Dog Show and Race day. With the dolcet tones of Mrs Sat Nav guiding us on our merry way, at the same time keeping an eagle eye on the speed limit, we arrived in Abbeyleix at approximately 10.00am. Into the venue, I could see by the atmosphere, it was going to be a good day. Stands were dotted around the field, selling everything to do with dog shows, Country Sports, burgers and Ice Cream. Some good bargains were to be had on the day, and no doubt we came away with a few of them. I am never lonely or lost for company at these shows. Over the many years of going to dog shows up and down the country and further afield, I have made so many good friends and some very strong friendships. Looking around the rings all the usual show goers of yesteryear were there and also a few new trainees. I chatted to some old friends and also made some new ones. I met up with a lovely lady called Annmarie Mulcahey and her husband, who like myself takes so many photographs at the shows in the south of Ireland. It was so nice speaking to you Annemarie and a lovely surprise. Tina Morrisey was there with little Abagail, who was having the time of her life running around on the freshly mown grass. Billy Cullen, my knight in shinning armour, carried my chair up from the racing line for me. What a gentleman. These are all lovely people and all out for a great days sport. The Raffle was one of the best I have seen so far this year. The prizes were magnificent and generated a lot of interest, especially my husband. I can honestly say he was like a child in a toy shop. I think he went home with half the prizes. One torture, but a happy bunny. Very soon after our arrival, the show got under way with the very efficient Alan Hand on the PA system. Alan you done a great job keeping everyone in touch with the days proceeding and proudly announcing our winnings. No time was wasted, and the racing and showing commenced. It was nice to see all our wee people in the childrens handling class. These little people are our Country Sportsmen and women and show organisers of tomorrow. Some proud mothers and fathers watching their little boys and girls walk round the ring on Sunday. I am sure there were some sleepy heads on Sunday night. Congratulations, to all the boys and girls that took part. Moving onwards, it was the adults time to show off their handling skills in the ring. What a large turnout of Whippets/Lurchers/Terriers. Your judging skills was honest, efficient and impeccable. Your duties on the day were carried out to perfection. There were plenty of photographs taken on the day, capturing everyones moment of glory. Not forgetting the great work carried by : Biddy Mc Grath and Lauren Mc Grath down on the starting line and the men at the top of the line. The banter and the craic was good down at the bottom of that hill. I thoroughly enjoyed your company girls. And Finally, Finally, may I take this opportunity to thank the Laois, Lurcher,Whippet and Terriers Club for a brilliant first time show this year. Well worth the journey. It was evident Brian Grady, his wife and family and his team had put a lot of hard work in behind the scenes to make this Charity Show day most enjoyable for everyone. You worked so hard Brian, and made us all feel at ease in your native Co Laois. Many thanks for the memories. As darkness was on the horizon and the end to a perfect day looming, it was time to say good bye Abbeyleix, and be on the road again back home to Co Armagh and the place we call home. Many thanks Laois Club for the memories, and God willing, we will all be back next year for more of the same. ***Let it be noted, that the LLWTC are giving all Proceeds from this show to St Vincent De Paul Charity, a very worthy cause. 21. The First Sporting Whippet Club NI Dog Show and Race Day 2018. Ballee playing fields, situated in the shadow of the famous City of the Seven Towers' , is centered on the outskirts of Ballymena. A thriving up market town, Ballymena has evolved over the years to a centre of excellence for shopping commerce. This brilliant setting was the new venue for The Sporting Whippet Club NI Dog Shows and Race days of 2018. As we drove down the motorway towards the playing fields, this being my first time there, my mind was filled with anticipation of what lay before me. On turning the corner I certainly was not disappointed. There before my eyes was ample space of tar and cement for ringside parking, and loads of green pastures to set up our showing rings on. Although for much of the day it was wet and windy, this did not dampen the spirits of the good Canine people of the Whippet world. There was a good turnout of whippets for such enclement weather on the day. It was nice to meet up with some old friend, and also made some new ones. The raffle always generates a lot of excitement, with plenty of craic and good banter. As always, the usual suspects moaning and groaning when their numbers are not called out. Having said that the usual suspects went home with an armful of winnings. All happy bunnies at the end of the day. Many thanks to everybody who donated items for the raffle. All very much appreciated. Time flies by very quickly, and very soon it was Race and show time. **A Big congratulations to Rea Wilson on winning Overall Show Champion of Champions with his beautiful whippet ODIS, and Reserve Champion went to Janet Duke with her winning whippet Oscar. Well done and well deserved to both people.** Finally, may I take this opportunity to thank our judge of the day, Colin Tucker for carrying out his duties with impeccable judgment, fairness and good taste. I cannot forget our chairman Kirsty Fyffe, Racing manager Chontelle Mc Meekan and their hard working committee for the running of a very successful first show of 2018. Paul Morrison took some lovely photograph full of skill and happy memories. Many thanks for that Paul. A very enjoyable day was had by all. ***The 2nd Sporting Whippet Club NI show of the year will be on Sunday 20th May 2018 at Ballee Park, Ballymena. See you all then*** Margaret Mc Stay

  23. CANCELLED UNTO FURTHER NOTICE Gain Irish Open (Tommy Cullens Show) Cancelled unto further notice Sunday 8th April 18 Hi all unfortunately The Gain Irish Open is postponed until later in the summer as the field for the overflow parking is to soft, our own field the main show field has all weather tracks but could not take the large crowd expected again this year without the over flow car park, and as all our judges are coming from overseas I have to make a call on it before they finalise their travel arrangements.
