  5. Gilford Lurcher, Terrier, Whippet Show and Raceday, at the NI Country Sports Fair Scarvagh House, Scarva, Saturday 27th May and Sunday 28th May 17. As the sun broke through the clouds early Saturday morning, dogs fed and watered, we headed off to the NI Country Sports Fair at Scarvagh House, Scarva. While driving into this 340 Acre estate, we were shadowed all the way by mature parkland, woodland, and stunning scenery. There was a grandeur of trees and trappings of wildlife that goes with a magnificent sprawling country estate. This stunning venue was the home for the 3rd year running of the NI Country Sports Fair. The Fair celebrates country sports and country pursuits, from gun dog tests, Lurcher, Terrier and Whippet showing and racing, Ferretts, Archery, Clay pigeon shooting and many more activities too numerous to mention. We arrived at Scarva at 10.00am on Saturday, and of course as soon as we got parked at the ringside, dogs in tow, we headed up into the Fair to soak up and take in all the fun of the Fair The sound of childrens laughter, the barking of dogs, the smell of hot burgers, the country music and with dancing ladies and gentlemen, I must say the atmosphere was electric. Foremost on our minds was breakfast. We stopped off at the Yellow Door stand and had some lovely food, which set us up for the day. Onwards and upwards, and it was time to get started with some good retail therapy. By midday on both days the fair was full to capacity. There were some showers of rain on Saturday, but that did not dampen the spirits of the little people who really enjoyed all the various amusements on site. Some very sleepy heads on Saturday and Sunday night. Had a yarn with Charlie Keenan, and Steven Smyth on the Barbour Stand. What a lovely man, and a great conversationalist. Field and Stream, Andrea Cowans stand was crowded, and Trevor and Denise Cahill were busy and very welcoming as usual, and selling some lovely leads for our Canine friends. Davy (Matthew) Downey was there with his Ferrett racing and showing, and certainly brought a lot fun and laughter to young and old. Davy had a variety of classes both for showing and racing these little creatures and created a lot of excitement around the ring. I met up with some lovely country sports people and their families on both days. Ritchie and Patricia Verden travelled all the way from Sligo, as did the Smith families from Carlow. Mark Maloney and his mates travelled from County Clare right there in the deep south of our beautiful country. Its these good Canine people that make the fair so successful and family orientated. Here are some Showing and Racing Results. Ferretts Congratulations to Rose Mc Coy winner of the Overall Ferrett Krypton Factor obstacle course with the fastest time. Roses Ferrett Sansa also took 2 firsts in the ferret showing. There were other winners with Ferretts on the day, but I don’t have their names. Congratulations to all. And Finally, may I take this opportunity to thank the Judges on the day, Fiona Devlin Whippets/Jonny Wilson Lurchers/Trevor Coulter Terriers for a job well done. Judging is not an easy task, but you all carried out your duties with precision and perfection. As usual, a lot of hard work and planning went into organising this brilliant Fair, dog show, and Race day at Scarva House. This would not of been possible if it were not for three very important people in the Canine world. Ian Davison, Justin Hill, Ben Davison, and their brilliant band of helpers, and all the people in the background who worked so hard to make this Fair, Dog show and Race days so successful, we are truly thankful. Ian, Justin and Ben, the Dog Show and Race Days was a credit to you all. Excellent team work . And Finally, Finally, last but not least, Gillian and Derek Lutton, Directors of the NI Country Sports Fair, you produced another brilliant and successful Country Sports Fair in a top of the range venue, a real credit to you and your team. All the hard work and sleepless nights paid off, and many thanks for two memorable days at your fair, and long may it continue. You achieved what you set out to do 100%, and I am already looking forward to more of the same in 2018. Margaret Mc Stay

  11. THE DWTC DOG SHOW AND RACEDAY SUNDAY 14th MAY 17 Once again all roads filtered to Sandy Heaks Modern Farm Sunday 14th May for the annual DWTC Dog show and Raceday. As we drove along the beautiful country roads around the picturesque village of Scarva, it was not long to we could hear the sound of barking dogs echo in the distance through the countryside. When we arrived, the field was in mint condition with show rings and racecourse ready to go to host another days enjoyment at this now very popular venue. Very early in the morning, the sun came out to play, and continued shining for the duration of the show. This event always attracts a very large crowd from the canine fraternity. Folk travelled from North and South of the border and further afield. From very early morning cars and trailers were arriving full to capacity with family and dogs on board. As this show was a Master Mc Grath and Mick the Miller qualifier, all dogs were in top condition and all rearing to have a go at these two prestigious events. Each year the DWTC goes from strength to strength and this year was no different. As the day progressed and time passes so quickly, I moved around the field having a yarn with many of the good canine folk who came to support this magnificent sporting day out on our summer calendar. I got a big bear hug from the Mc Graths from Carlow. These people travel long distances to be at our shows, as do the Smiths and Nolans from Carlow, and many more from Dublin and the deep South of Ireland. All great people, and all part of our country sports community. As usual the raffle generated an affray of excitement around the field. As the numbers were called out one by one, cheers of joy and laughter rang out all over the place. Some happy campers went home with armfuls of goodies. Very soon it was show time, with the rings full of quality dogs. At one stage I counted 22 dogs in the lurcher ring and 18 Whippets in the Whippet ring. Same went for the Terriers and Strong dogs. What a turnout, after a great season for these dogs, young and old in the field. Leanne Barry kept everybody well fed with her tasty burgers all day. Thanks for that Leanne. Nobody went home hungary . We had some great craic and festivities with some of the regulars during the show and after the show. Great people and all out for a great days enjoyment, and that we had. My sides are still sore from laughing. Some great characters in the doggie world. Here are Overall Showing and some Racing Results. **Overall Champion Lurcher Raymond Sloan with Max Reserve Neill Pinky with Ben **Overall Champion Terrier Peter Conn with Frankie Reserve Dessie Mackin with Frosty **Overall Champion Whippet Rea Wilson with Odis Reserve Janet Duke with Oscar **Overall Champion Strong Dog Gareth Crumlish with Kelo Reserve Jed Brady with Ben ***Overall Champion and Best in Show went to : Peter Conn with Frankie ***Overall Puppy Champion went To : Paddy Elliman with Toro Reserve Lisa Beggs with Ciras **Master Mc Grath Racing Qualifers went to : Nicky Smith with Scooby Stephen Mc Grath with Meg **Mick The Miller Racing Qualifers went to : Seamus Hart with Lucy S O Neill with Ivy. And Finally many thanks to our Judges Lurchers : Thomas Coleman/ Terriers : Terry Crossen/Whippets: Billy Bolger/ Strong Dogs : Tony Lee. Judging is not an easy remit in any sense of the word, but you carried out your duties with efficency and respect. Many thanks to Sandy Heak for the brilliant venue. Without your generosity Sandy, this day would not of been possible . I took some photographs at the show and these are on my Facebook timeline at the moment. And Finally, Finally, I always leave the best to last. I must not forget the man and woman at the helm of this brilliant show day. Tom and Leanne Barry, with your family Morgan and Ethan, and your brilliant back up team, you made everybody so welcome. It was very evident a lot of hard work and organization was carried out behind the scenes to make your show so enjoyable and successful on the day. Again Tom and Leanne, thank you so much for a most memorable day, and don’t forget to have more of the same in 2018. Margaret Mc Stay

  13. We are pleased to announce that as part of the 30th Annual All Ireland Terrier, Whippet and Lurcher Championships there will be a special trophy to be won outright by the winner of the Plummer Terrier class at the Irish Game Fair at Shanes Castle on the 25th June. This is sponsored by Paul Pringle in memory of his friend Brian Plummer. TOP PLUMMER TERRIER AWARD FOR SHANES CASTLE GAME FAIR 2017 Irish Country Sports & Country Life Editor, Paul Pringle writes with news of a superb new trophy which he will present to the TOP PLUMMER TERRIER at the All Ireland Championship at Shanes Castle this June: ‘Many years ago, the late Brian Plummer and I were good friends and indeed it was Brian who traveled from the far north of Scotland to stand as my Best Man at Gretna Green. We had been drawn together though the world of countrysports, writing and a love of working dogs, and of course he had written a series of articles for Irish Country Sports & Country Life magazine. My primary interest lay in gundogs, while Brian’s was lurchers and terriers, of which he had many, along with numerous breeding projects and programmes, about which he wrote countless books, most of which adorn my bookshelves. That was where the similarity ended. My scribblings were never destined for books, I was only an amateur gundog trainer, never a dog breeder and, unlike Brian, I was not one for controversy, something that seemed to draw him like a moth to a flame. He had views, strong ones, and seldom if ever shied away from stating them. I think it fair to say there were two different schools of opinion on Brian and his dogs and writings, and both groups held robustly to their positions — much like the man himself. I also think it fair to say that many who decried his arguments had never hunted with the man, or seen his dogs in action. I had that privilege many times in Scotland, and ran a couple of his Lucas terriers and a lurcher bred down form Blue, one of his earlier dogs. Something he will be much remembered for (amongst many things) is the creation of a very special dog which bears his name, the Plummer Terrier. This was no ‘Kennel Club’ creation, but the end product of a very selective breeding programme undertaken meticulously by Brian to produce a terrier with specific attributes. The Plummer Terrier filled a niche slot in the working terrier world and was adopted by enthusiastic supporters of the dog, with resulting progeny to be seen today throughout the UK and farther afield. I have long thought that it would be fitting for me to honour Brain and for me to acknowledge our friendship in some way. Last year, Albert Titterington put up a prize for the Plummer Class and I thought that I would like to do similar for 2017. I have the honour of presenting a fine cold cast bronze of a terrier (unfortunately not of a Plummer Terrier as I was unable to source one at this time) to the winner of the Plummer Class at 30th All Ireland Terrier Championships at Shanes Castle Game Fair which is on 24/25 June 2017. The award is to be kept by the winner and therefore this is a once in a lifetime opportunity for an enthusiast to carry off this particular trophy and I hope to see as many Plummers as possible along for the event.’ Caption The Award For Top Plummer Terrier at Shanes Castle 2017
  14. Carnew Charity Dog Show and Race Day, Sunday 23rd April 17 Carnew is a market town situated in the extreme south of County Wicklow, hugging the borders of the beautiful Slaney Valley. This was the venue for Carnew Charity Dog Show and Race Day, Sunday 23rd April 17. As the alarm clock jingled at our bedside at 4.30 am, it was time to rise and shine, hitch up the dog trailer and head for Alan Crosbies Charity Dog Show, in Carnew, Co Wicklow. We arrived in Carnew at 9.00am, and not a cloud in the sky. By 12.30 the cars were three deep in the field, signaling the popularity of this well organized Charity Show. The good Canine folk from North and South of the border, came out in force to support this Charity Working Dog Show. The weather was kind to us, although it got cloudy and a little cold late on in the afternoon. You could smell the lovely country air of Slaney Valley, the minute we stepped out of the car and unto the dewy green grass of the show ground. For a moment I thought I was at a show back home, there were so many familiar faces looking back at me. John Shaw was there, and what a great days craic we had with this man. As they say, he is the heart of corn, and a keen country sports person both in the show ring and in the field. Gladys and Alec Savage, the Rafferty girls, Michael Quinn, and many more good canine folk from both sides of the border were there, to numerous to mention. What a turnout on the day. Some great stands there with all the country sports gear you could wish for. Denise and Trevor Cahill were there on their stand with all types of Dog leads dog coats and many other items on show. The little people were well catered for, with a Bouncy Castle and a Pet Farm with Goats, Chickens, Hens, and Peacocks, and plenty of safe ground for them to play around in. Mick Foxs little girl Priya had a ball there. Some tired little people on Sunday night. There were some brilliant prizes in the raffle, and many happy campers went home with armfuls of goodies. We were lucky enough to win a very expensive hunting lamp, which will be our guiding light later on in the year when we go to visit Mr Red. Prior to the showing, the Master Mc Grath and Mick the Millar qualifiers were run. The buss around that race course was just a treat to listen too. As the qualifiers came home to the finishing line, the roar of excitement echoed among them Wicklow Hills. Some fine dogs were entered and the qualifiers were announced as follows : Master Mc Grath Qualifier : Gary Smith with Fergie Mick The Millar Qualifier : Fran Kenny Eddie Kane Congratulations to all qualifiers. Next came the Ferret Show. A good turnout of Ferrets in this section. Overall Champion Ferret went to: Craig Murphy with Neddy Reserve Rose Mc Coy with Sansa Congratulations to the winners. Judges were : Whippets : Karen Cummins Terriers : Gary Healey Pets : Jade Dunphy Lurchers : John Moriarty Lurchers : Paul Deasey Hounds : Derek O Connor Strong Dogs : Rob Hicks Ferrets : David Nolan There were photographers on the day clicking away, and some amatures like myself, recording our every moment of glory. All my photographs are up on my Facebook page at the moment. And Finally, Finally, what words can I say, that would speak highly enough about these two wonderful people. Yes Tracy and Alan Crosbie, you made us all so welcome to your show. I know Tracy and Alan gave up a lot of their spare time organising this show, with all the highs and lows, for all of us to enjoy, and enjoy we did. Alan and Tracy Crosbies Charity Dog Show will be etched in my memory for many months to come, as one of the best shows of the year. And wait for it, the icing on the cake. Alan has just informed me 3497.00eu was made for charity from the proceeds of this show, and will be presented to the St Vincent De Paul very shortly. Absolutely brilliant. This is what human nature is all about, and especially our dog shows and charity. Can you imagine what comfort this money will bring to some families in our country to day that may not be as lucky in life as we are. We have all rallied to our friends in need in a big way at this dog show. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for a lovely day, and hopefully we will all be back next year for more of the same. 21. The First Sporting Whippet Club NI Dog Show and Race Day , Held at Dunsilly Kennells , Dunsilly, Co Antrim Sunday 9th April 17. Sunday 9thth April was the first Sporting Whippet Club NI Dog Show and Race day of 2017 at Dunsilly Kennells, Dunsilly, Co Antrim. Although the weather forecast was not good for Sunday, with the exception of a cold wind, the rain kept away, and we even had a little sunshine off and on through out the day. From early morning, cars and trailers arrived from North and South of the border, with families and dogs in tow. I can honestly say this show was one of the biggest and best Whippet Club NI shows I have attended at Dunsilly for many years. As the show progressed, so did the banter and the craic. The atmosphere was electric. It was nice to meet up with so many regular show goers, after the long cold winter, and also make some new friends. No matter how many shows I go to over the years, and there have been many, I still meet and make new friends. That’s why I adore this most rewarding job. Very soon it was time to start the Racing and showing. In all classes from puppy up to vetern, the ring was full of whippets, as was the race track. This first show of the year was the biggest turnout of whippets at Dunsilly I have seen in years. As Sundays show was a qualifer for the 5 nations Whippet Champion of Champions at Shanes Castle in June, this championship went to Davey Best and his winning Whippet Buddy. Davy won the Overall Champion Whippet and Best in Show. Congratulations Valerie and Davy and well done. Gladys and Alec Savage had a win in the racing with Billybob, as did Graham Fyffe with his Champion Whippet. Congratulations to all the winners. A full list of winners both in showing and racing will be on the Sporting Whippet NI face book page shortly. And Finally, may I take this opportunity to thank the judge on the day Mr Pat Mc Govern, who travelled from Scotland to judge at this event. Pat you are one of natures gentlemen, very courteous to every whippet owner in the ring and carried out your duties with integrity and perfection. Many thanks Pat for a job well done. And finally, finally, there has been so much hard work and organisational skills went in to making this first show of the year a roaring success. This accolade goes to our Chairman Kirsty Fyffe, Vice Chairman John Mc Stay, Racing Manager David Campbell, Secretary Janet Duke, Treasurer Chontelle Mc Meekan and our hard working committee. Without all your team work, drive and dedication this day would not of been possible. Kirsty, David and team, you all have done a wonderful job in bringing the club back to life again, and Long may it continue . I will conclude now, by thanking everybody who supported the first Sporting Whippet Club NI Show of the year. To our sponsors, gifts donated for the Raffle, and those who helped out in any way. I look forward to seeing you all back here again at Dunsilly on Sunday 7th May 2017 for more of the same. Margaret Mc Stay
