  1. I feel for your losses, and I hope if there is something you are doing wrong, you figure that out. I can say if you really love the chase you will never, ever give up. I wish you all the best with your next pup and your next pup and your next pup....
  2. looks very similar to my1/2 ridgeback(sire) 1/4 grey 1/4 stag (dam) though my boy is 8 years old and a fair bit stockier
  3. nice looking animal, i am intrigued as i do not hear of many people working pure greys. from your experience what are the advantages and disadvantages? have you bred and with what? and most importantly how does he go on the big rabbits? thanks for sharing the pics
  4. there is nothing quite like feathers lol
  5. why don't you like the mancs? are you scowser?
  6. here in oz it is perfectly legal to shoot a dog amongst your sheep and rightly so imo. however it can and has led to very bad confrontations which of course everyone wants to avoid. if i had permission and the property owner was asking for help i would help out anyway i could short of breaking the law too badly. i would suggest harrassing them every possible time they trespass, surely eventually they will find hunting on that particular property too troublesome and find somewhere else to poach. atb.
  7. ridgebacks are beautiful dogs with beautiful temperaments. they certainly have alot of athletic benefits too. i have seen them crossed and used as pigdogs successfully and heard of them used as back up for staghounds on deer. i currently have a 1/2 ridge x stag grey which is very good on foxes and larger game but is a bit heavy for hares and rabbits. i am curious to see if he was put over a sighthound how the offspring would perform on the faster, lighter game. if you wished to experiment with something other than the usual bull x or whatever i think a good ridgeback would be a great option. i
  8. i wish you all the best night worker, times must be really tough to be even considering getting rid of your dogs. the fact you have five kids and a pregnant woman and still have working dogs is testament you must love the chase! i myself have a dog that was given to me by a man who could not keep him anymore and i told him i will work him hard and if it doesn't work out i will offer him back before i get rid of him and if he ever wants him he can unconditionally take him back. if your dogs are decent you should be able to find someone to work them and care for them until you are in a better po
  9. thanks for the replies/ info, seems to be inconclusive though. i have heard garlic is good for dogs but i cannot say i see any noticeable differences, good or bad, in my dogs by giving them garlic. i have never given my dogs onion and i certainly won't either after hearing about it above. thanks and atb.
  10. i boil the vegies down and don't tip the water out as i think i would be tipping out alot of vitamins and nutrients. i then mix with brown rice and give a serve every day. i also boil a bit of garlic in with the vegies as i have heard it benefits dogs the same as it benefits humans. i would be interested if anyone has any more knowledge on the garlic. atb.
  11. some of the most impressive dogs i have seen! i would love to see them work. kudos to all who produce such fine animals and care for them and work them.
  12. Very interesting read, the ban really is a shame. I know very little on the topic but a lot of you old boys did A LOT of poaching. If we take dogs on to private land here the farmers shoot the dogs and if we got caught by the police dogs and vehicles are confiscated and even worse trouble if we have guns. I wonder do local communities/shires support the ban over there or is instigated by federal politicians? I hope the ban gets lifted for the sake of your dogs if nothing else. Thanks for the thread cocker
  13. Greyhound men always did love rabbit stew and them rabbits got to be fresh
  14. that is interesting Desertbred, i have heard salukis are a 'unique' breed and the patience and temperament thing i can understand, but what do you mean by adapting to the running styles? i am intrigued by the saluki but wether a saluki is suitable for me or i am suitable for a saluki will be hard for me to find out as they are not a common breed here. whatever dogs i own i do not make the decision lightly and i certainly try to be patient. it is definitely easier to be patient for a magnificent animal.
  15. thanks for sharing Ausnick, i won't complain if you have any more! i have heard there are some very good coursing dogs in the usa, i wish we had the same quantities here, but as long as i can find quality i will be happy. the quarantine laws here are a killer. there is a minimum 10 day stay which is actually better than i thought, but the fees are quite exorbitant and of course the buyer has to pay vet checks at country of origin and destination. if there is something wrong while in quarantine things can very quickly get out of hand. i think straws are a more viable option
  16. i recently acquired an older experienced dog (grey x stag x ridge) to back up my 10 month old stag for this reason as she was regularly chasing foxes (not catching) one out and i thought when she does get one it might put a fright through her. she is well on the way to taking care of them herself by 12 months now. we will see... do you hunt in the Netherlands? i have family in Nijmegen, i did not like amsterdam much but Nijmegen was a beautiful place.
  17. thanks for the advice and the names Maxhardcore and you made alot of sense, i am not really in a position to own enough dogs or have enough spare money to follow exactly what you advised but i wish i could! i was and am still thinking saluki lines are the way to go but i would love to hear more about borzoi's and crosses. if you can point me to your youtube clips Ausnick i would love to see them. i will check out the aloe site more thoroughly tomorrow, thanks Tomo. goodnight...
  18. i have never owned a kelpie but i have had alot to do with working kelpies owned by my uncles for sheep and also just as 'farmdogs' the fact my uncles fed these 'farmdogs' proves to me how useful they are. i have never seen more eager to please, intelligent dogs in my life, let alone the endurance and durability. sometimes it seemed they could not be hurt and EXTREME heat was barely acknowledged. i truly respect the working kelpie and one day will own one and try breed a good one to create a lurcher. ATB Taff in oz and anyone else with a working kelpie.
  19. beautiful looking pup, i would love to see him in full flight
  20. Also Tomo, i checked out the aloe link as i have used and still use products from forever and i found them to be exceptionally good but i could not see anything relating to dogs. i am curious, Cheers.
  21. thanks Tomo and Arcticgun, i appreciate your advice and i hope speculating on what would be a good coursing dog for Australia does not cause any grief for you. things must be really crazy over there. i am still not sure what the laws are here in oz but i am yet to hear of any legal issues with coursing here. i was thinking saluki would be the best option but i know options are very limited for working saluki although many show breeders aparently use imported working lines and do have an understanding of the saluki's unique talents wether or not it would work out or not, there is only one way t
  22. i haven't coursed hares much and when i have my dogs haven't stood a chance. i own a mixed sighthound bitch (wolf, deer, whippet, grey and i am not sure what the percentages are) who is about 10 months old and a 1/4 grey 1/4 stag 1/2 ridge male which is about 7 yrs old. they are both good keen dogs but have not had the speed or endurance to catch hares so far but i am keen to change that with my next dog. i like the sound of your borzoi x and i am curious to know more about them, like what do you cross with? do you breed? and have you had much experience with other sighthounds? i wish you happ
  23. Hi ausnick, i am in camden, on the outskirts of Sydney. there are a few around but plague proportions sounds like fun. i have seen some impressive borzois but never on the chase. Whereabouts are you?
  24. good advice quantax, there are imported saluki here, supposedly from working arabian lines, but the importation laws are really tough here so they send out straws. even if i/you did get some straws what dam would you put it in
