was told that you could feed kitchen scraps to a pig BUT, all the meat has to be for your own personal consumption, can`t even give a pork chop to a guest.

You can't feed them kitchen scraps regardless of who is consuming it pal.

That’s what the link dc posted on Wednesday was saying mate

its a load of shit ain’t it I can’t see how someone that keeps a small flock for eggs is a problem tbh I can understand these large commercial units having to register as there’s ££££ an someone has to foot the bill for losses or subsidys or contracts not met but with the amount of migrant birds carrying it there never control it plus the amount of poultry products imported that have lower standards than the uk it’s all a waste of time  I personally think it’s a form of taxable control coming to the normal man that wants to live a bit of the good life

Totally agree mate. A couple of hens at the allotments is not the problem regards bird flu!!! They just want to make it as hard as possible for the normal bloke.

Similar to not being able to feed pigs kitchen scraps. That was the norm for years, the "cottagers pig" and there were no issues. Because some bell end down south was importing wagon loads of food waste from France and caused foot and mouth they carte blanch apply a new law. Then people with little knowledge jump on the band wagon when you feed them carved pumpkins "if they have been in a kitchen and carved with a knife they are deemed kitchen waste".....f**k off! That isn't guna start foot and mouth!!!

If its for your own consumption best off just cracking on and keeping quiet.

  3. Heads up boys, anyone considering a few hens they are changing the rules. Used to be over 50 but from October now any/all birds kept are to be registered with DEFRA!

They will do anything to make it harder for people to provide for themselves.

  4. At the minute I think you can keep up to 49 birds without registering. My plan is to keep a dozen layers and a couple Cockerells and some growers for the freezer, I'm having to manage it to stay below the 50 No for reg. Bear in mind this is all live birds so I am up to 34 at the minute and nearly half of them are chicks which are the next generation but no use for eggs or meat at the minute. Would def go over 50 to do what I wanna do and this on a really small scale so they already have it controlled IF people register or even know.

The system is set up to stop people producing their own and not needing the system!!!!

I won't be registering unless they come knocking on my door.

I understand and fully support disease control etc but everything is going to far.

We are guna end up like Robin Hood hiding in the woods.

  5. Right lads, shook hands on a Ford Ranger so need this gone. I had the exhaust and radiator done back end of last year along with service and MOT.

    After quick sale.

Would take £1900 for it if anyone interested.

    Bargain IMO

If I don't get any nibbles by end of weekend it's going on ebay

What breed of chicken would yous recommend lads, preferably ones that stay on the ground lol

Depending what you want you can get breed more specific to laying, can get yr old Warren's for 5quid a hen round me, Ince you have nursed em.to health they will lay well for a few yrs still. I went for light sussex as they are dual purpose, for meat and eggs as I want both. I get 5-6 eggs a week per hen so just under 1 a day. Good solid bird, handles the cold and lays all year (some stop in winter). Nice looking bird aswell which isn't important but helps with the misus.

As some have said chickens will clear the ground they are on so either put them on slabs/concrete and feed em well or of your only having a few make a pen that can be moved, check out chicken tractors on YouTube etc.

You can free range depending on size of your place but they will gradually get further and further afield. We often have next doors chickens around ours and they are 300 yard down lane.

You can get an auto opener/closer on pen BUT they still need checking. They don't work 100% of time but it does ease the burden a bit.

Keep em clean and give em somewhere to keep their feet dry.

Worst thing is mites, they are a nightmare to get rid of so best to go for preventative measures. Mite powder in a dust bath, spray coops down internally with a mixture of veg oil and washing powder, on end of runs put double sided sticky tape. Combination of the above should stop it ever being an issue.

Main advice I would give, which is same for any livestock really, best thing is spend time with them that way you learn the norm so you can quickly spot when something isn't right.

We have Cockerell as we are away from.any other houses. He doesn't wake us up, we are used to the noises round here! Cockerells don't serve a purpose unless you want fertile eggs so if your not wanting to hatch your own then only get hens.

Chickens are great fun to keep, low input and eggs that are 10× better than shop shite. IMO well worth it.

  7. Finished the bee keeping course last night. Very interesting subject. I won't be pursuing it right now but think I will in the future. I thought it was stick some bees in a box and later in the year get some honey. It's a lot more intensive than that and I have enough plates spinning at the minute. Glad I did the course instead of reading up a bit and getting some hives!

  8. Now we are in the swing of it the next chicken shed should be coming today. This is guna be my brooder shed where I incubate eggs and raise the chicks.

Also guna be where I keep all chicken related gear instead of filling my big shed, this will mean I can get to my fishing tackle again and maybe get out on the banks!

Get some broody hens Oxford ginger are great broody birds an great mothers , get better hatch rate one of my ginger was on 18 eggs last year hatch all out

These were original ones I got via post. I'm incubating my own eggs now and getting 70-80% hatch rate which is good enough for me. Broody hens bring their own issues so I'm guna keep incubating in the plan.👍

    Excellent stuff.

When you brought the dozen hatching eggs, how many hatched mate please.?

I bought 4 sets of 6 from 4 different suppliers

    Batch 1

    Supplier 1 - 6 eggs - 2 fertile 1 hatched

    Suppler 2 - 6 eggs - 6 fertile 5 hatched

    Batch 2

    Supplier 1 - 6 eggs - 0 fertile

    Suppler 2 - 6 eggs - 6 fertile 3 hatched

My own eggs at home now I have 100%fertility and usually around 70-80% hatch rate.

I've sold my first 2 sets of hatching eggs via ebay/post so waiting for feedback to see how that went.

  11. Well, I have promised some cooked produce photos. Tonight's tea, double pork chops.......

Bloody gorgeous and now I am stuffed!

Genuinly have grown to appreciate food more. We have all got used to accepting shite for convenience.

Was also thinking tonight, whilst I am not personally religious, I can understand the history of saying grace and being thankful for the produce of the land.

  12. I said to one of lads yrs ago, before first wilder v fury

    Wilder beats AJ

    AJ beats Fury

    Fury beats Wilder

I still believe this was true at the time. Uysk was a bump in the road and if it wasn't for the politics we could have had 5yrs plus of the best heavyweight merry go round.

Want to give a nod to Parker, he is taking on people that no one will want to entertain so by the time the AJ/Fury /Uysk politics is dealt with I hope he gets another chance.

Dont fancy his chances with them 3 but he deserves a shot.

Do light Sussex Cockerells make a decent eating bird

They are a large fowl and everyone who comes comments on how big a bird they are. They are dual purpose for meat and eggs......so will let you know soon when the first one is on the table!

So with selling eggs as hatching eggs it’s still profitable 👍

it would be interesting to see how well they sell in next couple of months as it can be a fad hobby with certain breeds being popular and fetching big money then waning away year or two later  👍

Guna see how we go, I'm hoping to cover costs, anything extra would be a bonus. Bear in mind a 25kg sack has been lasting me a month I don't think it'll be too hard to cover cost.

Do you eat the birds too?

Planning to now that I have built up the number of birds I have. I've got 7 chicks in brooder at minute they are about 4week old. Will keep a few of them for laying then rest will be for sale or table. The ones that are hatching today are going in my growing pen for sale or the table.

I'm planning on getting a bigger incubator to do 24 eggs at a time with the plan of growing batches for the table, have a cull day get em all cleaned and sorted and in freezer.

  16. Well my first set of hatching eggs sold for £20+6p&p for half a dozen. Worth doing if they keep going for that sort of money!

Got 10eggs in incubator that are due to hatch today/tomorrow, got 8 that have pipped already so looking good 🤞
