  1. Heat treated after welding so shouldn't be a problem, purposely kept the spine and the tang softer so they aren't brittle, unadulterated cutting edge to the blade is the important bit.
  2. Had this idea a couple of days ago and had to give it a try. To put stainless steel weld on a high carbon blade for decorative purposes. Think it actually turned out pretty well. It all started as an old file annealed to start with, cut a piece off the end. Built up a bit of stainless steel weld with the mig welder, not pretty, think another time i would grind the file flat first but thought it would make a better pattern with the ribs left on, just made a dirty weld as it was not clean. Next, grind weld flat and rough out a shape. All done with angle grinder.

  5. Get that bandsaw fixed gaff! Look forward to seeing pics of the finised article.
  6. Cheers midnight, if any of your upcoming blanks are rw34 let me know.
  7. Sorry for hyjacking the thread but Midnight is giving some good advice. Stainless steel, i never realy liked it in a blade, but mayby just not had the right stainless, prefer high carbon for keeping an edge, saying that thinking of a stainless blade for a sea fishing knife where it is in contact with salt water a lot. What flat stock should i look for or do i just stick with my carbon steel knives and clean/oil regularly.
  8. Yeah don't suppose they would think much of a flattend out stainless steel washing machine drum being used for a grille! Might get round to making a more authentic looking one some day. feck em pal any one can bolt on manufactured parts not everyone has your ingenuity looks the nuts gruff Cheers lee. I suppose there arn't many about that look like a giant cheese grater on wheels!

  10. Likewise, thanks for the advise Midnight. Not really kitted out to forge weld my own Damascus blades so where best to buy a decent billet? Cheers P.S Just removed my bid on the ebay import!
  11. I fancy making a Damascus blade Anyone tried those Damascus billets on ebay from Pakistan? Are they any good? Or where do you get a reasonable priced good quality decent size one? Cheers
  12. Computer crashed so lost all the pics of work underway but hers a couple now. Been used for a season so not as pristine as it was when i finished.
  13. 30mtr shed so full of kit it is hard to to get room to work!
  14. Cheers lee, just always made stuff. Not a lot of spare ready around when i was a youngster so if i wanted it i just had to make it, kind of stuck, still making stuff!
  15. Both made from Land Rover leaf spring. The top one i made years ago. The bottom one made by my son recently based on my original design. They make perfect butcher knives for cutting up a carcase. Both were peacock blue tempered and take a razor edge. 9" blades excluding handle.
  16. Did you start with a blank or from scratch? Either way nice job, looks the bees knees.
  17. Good idea that, don't smoke but might make one for the fun of it.
  18. Yeah you can buy the panels, maby £500-£600 would have bought the lot. The way i did it the material cost was just a few quid for mig wire, flap discs and isopone etc, not that saving money was the main reason, infact the extra labour cost likley excedeed that so not worthwhile paying someone else to turn a sink into a bonnett. I enjoy making things especially out of recycled materials(as you can seee from my other threads), using pre-existing shapes etc and matching them to what is required. More satisfaction creating something fom nothing than there is from punching your credit card numb
  19. Nice work. What glue do you use for laminating?
  20. Cheers mate. Engine was re-built not long before i got it so looked like nothing at all but was a good runner. In the latest pictures you can see my "custom" cold starter, a tin of brake cleaner that injects straight into air intake, much kinder on the engine than easy start. There is an original cold start system but it needs a bit of work, might get round to sorting it out one day.
  21. This is where it's at now, ongoing so will get a final spray when it is all done......sometime in the next 25 years.
  22. welcome bud. Post up some pics of the catapults you have made.
