I have had very similar recently with my 6month cocker pup, a collie off the lead came flying over hackles up and tried it on with him. The cocker is the softest dog ever and was straight on his back being submissive but that didn't deter the collie. I would say that the total duration of the gunfire would only be an hour or so, split over the numerous drives with probably an hour between drives as the beaters push the birds on to the guns. For each drive there may be gunfire for about 10 minutes or so. The obvious suggested is to get yourself a shotgun and get involved or join the beating team!

I would say a 5lb hound will scrap like a 20lb carp - but then I don't fish for carp and have only had 2 over 20lb. If you can I would seriously suggest emptying a spool and filling the bait runner with 15-18lb mono and then a shock leader of at least 60lbs on the end of that.
