  1. Register with Gamekeepers Welfare Trust (Job Register) and Rural Recruits (all types of estate work).
  2. Hi - I'm not a new member but wondered if someone could help? My family have some pups from working dogs for sale and I wanted to add details to the gun dogs/livestock bit of the forum. Can't see who is the moderator for that bit of the forum and there's no option to start a new topic and put info on. Cheers.
  3. Calling all keepers, stalkers, ghillies and those who are looking for this type of work - the Gamekeepers Welfare Trust needs YOU! If you haven't heard of GWT, they are a charity which exists to support keepers, stalkers, ghillies & their dependents. They offer a Helpline managed by people who understand the particular challenges of the jobs; they can advise, support or point people in the direction of help with all kinds of issues e.g. housing, education & grants, employment mediation, finance, redundancy, legal matters, retirement... And they are there for the whole fami

  5. Sorry - wasn't very clear. The number on the NGO page is the GWT's helpline number and gets you through to whoever is looking after the helpline at that point in time - Helen or one of her team. Helen is the lynchpin who runs the GWT, along with her team of volunteers. There are representatives from NGO, SGA and other organisations on the board of Trustees. But the Gamekeepers Welfare Trust (and it's work, inc the job register) is a separate organisation. I think the page on the NGO website is an old one from when Helen ran a Welfare Network for keepers; I don't think the NGO websi
  6. This came up a few months ago via NGO in the Shooting Times. I think you can hold them in a pen (so presumably you can pen them in a wood) but you can't actually release them alongside pheasants because they're non-native. Although pheasants etc. are also not indigenous to the UK, they were naturalized here several centuries ago, whereas it may be a while before all the guinea fowl being released every season (apparently!) become naturalized!
  7. I'm sure you'll have looked at NGOs website as gonetoearth suggested above - the menu on the left has "About Gamekeeping" and "Advice Sheets" - they're both worth a look. Also click on "Charitable Trust" to get to their educational trust website; the "Becoming a Gamekeeper" page has a section called "At College" with a "click here" option for a list of courses. You could also contact the Gamekeepers Welfare Trust - they run a job register for keepers looking for work and employers with vacancies to fill. And keep talking to people on forums like this as they're a gold mine of contacts and oppo
  8. Absolutely - Helen Benson, but it's the Gamekeepers Welfare Trust job register, not NGO. Originally I believe Helen ran it on a voluntary basis but the job register is now part of the range of services GWT provide for gamekeepers, stalkers, ghillies and their dependants. If you've been (or may be) made redundant, the GWT can provide much more than just the job register - phone their Helpline and talk to them on 01677 470180.
  9. Apologies for repeating myself, but this kind of query comes up again and again... Keepering is like loads of other professions: a few years back you didn't need a qualification (and in some cases, for some professions there wasn't a qualification) but where you have any profession with competition to get in, you'll find courses spring up related to it. Once there are qualifications, it ups the ante and increases the competition. Joe Bloggs might have a qualification and some experience of working in a profession while John Doe might have left school and gone straight into working in
  10. Game & Wildlife Conservation Trust are running a 3-day course for p/t keepers this month - info below from their website: This course has gone from strength to strength over the years, filling the needs of part-time gamekeepers, both amateur and professional. This three-day course takes place annually in the Autumn at our Fordingbridge headquarters in Hampshire and is run by our advisors Mike Swan, Alex Butler and Henrietta Appleton. This year's course will take place from 23rd to 25th September. Full of practical advice and tips on game management and keepering, topics will include:

  12. There are quite a few posts from people looking for experience or jobs but who don't always seem to have looked at basic info available from key organisations. The National Gamekeepers Org., Scottish Gamekeepers Assoc. and Gamekeepers Welfare Trust all have information about being a keeper on their websites. The Gamekeepers Welfare Trust also run a job register which can help match people looking for a job with people who have a vacancy to fill. The register is mentioned on the NGO website, but it's run by GWT. And bear in mind that it's becoming like many other fields to work in t
