  1. Ever had a gun you've sold and wish you could buy back? Dr Syn was such a gun,  my Daystate Mk 3. Recently got a chance to buy a Mk 3.

Putting the sling on I noticed a flake of walnut,  lifting by the rear stud.  I look at it closely and realise that the clumsy idiot who did that was indeed me.

    I've got Dr Syn back!

  2. Stuck at home you may be tempted to pull the pcp out and indulge in some back yard plinking. Some may be lucky enough to live on their permissions. Either way those of use with pre-charged-pneumatic rifles need a source of air that isn't going to run out.

You have two choices. High pressure stirrup pump or charging your own cylinder with a high pressure air compressor.

There are a variety of these around but I went for a New Warrior off of Amazon at £210 delivered. The seller claimed to have UK stock and it was delivered in under a week.

The beast is shipped dry so you will need some oil. The handbook says you can use 5w 40 motor oil, so got a litre of that for under a fiver. I replaced the oil cap with the breather plug as per instructions and then spent 15 minutes looking for where the power supply to the coolant pump was.

It was recommended by other users to get an additional filter. £25 saw an Airmega filter with molecular sieve purchased (Amazon again). The purpose of this is to remove any moisture or oil from the output high pressure air, a bit belt and braces but better safe than sorry.

The brass filter supplied with the machine has a cotton fibre plug (aka a tampon) only. I screwed this into the Airmega and have a double filter system. I have an additional Foster fitting on the end so with a decanting coupler it is a matter of seconds now to attach the whip from the bottle.

My coolant reservoir is a plastic builders tub which holds 40 litres of water. The compressor works damned hard so the little submersible pump needs a good sized reservoir. Running the compressor from 240 bar to 300 bar took about 20 minutes. The temperature the cylinder head got to stabilised at around 50 degrees.

You can charge a cylinder up from empty if necessary and the compressor has enough guts to fill a large cylinder, so how do you do it?

    1) prepare coolant reservoir, ensure pump is connected (when you switch on at the mains the coolant pump starts) and submerged in the coolant reservoir (tub, bucket, barrel). Ensure the coolant return pipe is also in the reservoir (or wear wellies and have a sodding big reservoir, like Rutland Water). Switch on at the mains and watch the cylinder head temperature change. Then check pressure remaining in the cylinder.

    2) connect air cylinder. Obvious but worth saying. Make sure that the whip is empty of air and tighten up the bled screws.

    3) start er up. When the pressure in the whips and filters starts to approach the pressure in the cylinder open the valve up fully. Keep an eye on the temperature, if it gets to 55 degrees switch it off. Then more the pressure on the bottle, do up the valve on the cylinder. Bleed the system and wait for the pump to cool the head back down. Do up the bleed screw, start the compressor up again and when the pressure in the whip line approaches the bottle pressure, open the valve up.

The compressor has a 300 bar burst disc safety system, so overfilling isn't going to be a problem, but clean underwear might be if it goes. They do supply a good few spares but don't make a habit of it.

When you have filled the bottle switch off the compressor and do up the bleed screw. Then undo the high pressure bleed on the compressor to clear the water trap. Uncouple the cylinder, then remove pump from reservoir let the coolant drain (I used tap water) pack away.

    Well worth the money.

  3. It started when my wife bought an accursed 280 carbine with the T06 trigger, that would never fire right.

No matter what you did, it fired when you looked at it, the trigger was so light it was a hair trigger. Gun shop could not set it up, so she got a refund. Bought herself a secondhand one a few years later, exactly the same problem again, once again could not get it anything like right, so sold it on and made buyer aware.

When we were picking up my Phoenix mk 2, I was made aware of another gun the seller had. An Original 45 (as in the gun marque was Original, model 45), but this was a factory made .20...

Never had a .20, not one, had to have it. Now bear in mind this rifle is knocking on for 40 years old, she did not look in bad condition, in fact I have seen rifles new in the box in worse condition than this baby.

Now the 45 is an interesting turning point in Diana history. Diana? I hear you cry, yes Diana.

You see at the end of the second world war, Germany was being made to pay for damages to occupied countries, in anyway possible. This included guns. Now obviously the Mayer and Grammelspacher factory was bombed into oblivion, being a supplier of parts for Mauser. After 1945 arms production was curtailed and the name Diana was sold to Milbro as part of a reparation deal. Milbro then did their best to destroy the name with a succession of increasingly crap rifles. Mayer and Grammelspacher started making rifles again in the 50s, but used a variety of different names due to Milbro owning Diana.

The Original brand was supposed to convey the fact that they were made by the Original Diana makers (geddit?). The 45 was their first take in what can be construed as a modern air rifle. The trigger is a complete separate unit, that can be detached as a whole, not a whole bloody mess of bits.

Early reviews said they twanged and shook themselves to pieces, later ones had additional bolts in the stock to stop this happening. I have one of the first with the anti shake rattle n roll bolts.

Now this gun might just have been fettled, like a lot. Like virtually no recoil. On the other hand it does weigh the same as a Volvo 740 estate, diesel.... It makes a 77 feel like a Gat. But like I say there is little or no recoil and boy is this quiet. I can see why some people reckon you do not need a silencer on a spring rifle with this baby. She is remarkably quiet yet still making 11.05 ft lb. Grouping is good, providing I am doing my job right. This is how a Diana should be.

Now with the brand owned by the Chinese and being slapped on guns more reminiscent of Milbro (whose name is being slapped on guns made in China - oh the irony) I do not think we will see the likes of spring guns this good bearing the Diana name again.

Then we have the slightly younger Original 45, an 80s child (1981) in .20

  5. The saving comes from

    1) not having my gauge on my bottle constantly knackered by the person filling it,

    2) not having to travel 80 miles to get it filled (there and back twice),

    3) having to time my air needs to when they are filling

    4) actually getting a full fill.

I’ve got a 12 ltr bottle, what make is your compressor and how much are they? Might get one myself as I have three pcp’s now and an empty slot for another.

Mine is the New Warrior from Amazon. Paid £210 for it. Additional filter £25. Plus a decanting coupling.

How long does it take to fill your dive bottle mole? Is it 230 or 300 bar?

Tried topping up from 240 to 300 bar. Took about 20 minutes. I have a 300 bar 12 litre bottle.

The system has 2 filters on it after it leaves the compressor. One has a molecular sieve in it, that came from Amazon for £25, the other is the filter that same with the machine and has a cotton fibre plug filter (also known as tampon type). No oil or water made it to the second filter. After the bottle cooled it has 290 bar in it.

  8. Had to sell the SuperTen. Money got very tight.

But got something better to replace it.

An Original 45, made in 1981, but not in the usual calibre you would suspect. Not .177 or .22 but the one in the middle, I have a twenty cal...

I've been searching the internet to try and find reported problems with the Phox/Coyote/Buccaneer. So far nothing!

I'll try and find out figures from my local RFD but up to now it seems as though thy get sent out working and owners like them.

Mole, try removing the barrel band, I did and it improved accuracy across the fill.

I will do that if the groups at 30m are too large. But otherwise, will leave well alone (I believe in if it aint broke don't fix it!).

Can we not start a petition to make Packham warden on Gruinard and provide free accommodation i,e a tent and make it a lifetime position

Unfortunately they cleaned the island and killed the anthrax off, you could always make him a forest warden in The Red Forest, in a tent....

"Starting in 1986 a determined effort was made to decontaminate the island: 280 tonnes of formaldehyde solution diluted in sea water was sprayed over all 196 hectares of the island and the worst-contaminated topsoil around the dispersal site was removed. A flock of sheep was then placed on the island and remained healthy.

On 24 April 1990, after 48 years of quarantine and four years after the solution was applied, junior defence minister Michael Neubert visited the island and announced its safety by removing the warning signs.[9] On 1 May 1990, the island was repurchased by the heirs of the original owner for the original sale price of £500.[11]""

Or you could make him a warden at a mine field in the Falkands, tell him about the penguins and give him a pair of golf shoes....

  12. We just bought a Phox "lite" ie a Phox without all the pump and stuff, called a GX40, new, in the box, full powered made in Britain PCP for £287.99.

BSA made gun, BSA barrel, BSA magazine, available in .177 or .22. So if you have a scope and mounts already, you are not duplicating up on anything.

Hard enough to find a decent break barrel at this money, let alone a PCP, let alone a multishot PCP!

Seems a deal, I don't know anything about these, an update after a bit of use would be great!

Basically it is a Gamo Phox without the silencer, scope, pump and bag!

Stuck a Deben Whisper High Performance on it and the noise emitted was similar if not quieter than my Daystate X2...
