  1. Hi Woodman, A man after my own heart. A good post. Especially about the night vision,I personally would not go night netting without scanning the ground to be netted with night vision.to see if the rabbits are about in numbers and where they are feeding on the netting grounds. There might not be rabbits on the ground to be netted due to foxes, badgers, humans, stray dogs, other netters, weather conditions or mixy. I have been using night vision for at least 35 yrs, from the very first basic type to pilkington kite and beyond. The first one i had was a monocular 4x, This I mounted onto a 1" tub
  2. Go to the chemist and get a bottle of surgical spirit massage all over the tick areas and they will drop off in no time. Ticks actually breathe through their skin an old south african remedy is to cover the tick with vaseline which suffocates it and it drops out. Ive done this on my horses nose which was absolutely covered it worked a treat. regards masterhunter
  3. you can buy duffas mole traps from the actual makers (not copies) Bethel Rhodes 01535 602532. These are very good duffas traps. The Talpex can be purchased from John Underwood. these are copies but are still good 01789720785 regards masterhunter
  4. The orange grommets sound like sheep castration rings. These rings deteirate over time with uv sunlight on them. Always hang your nets in a dark place when not in use. Take two new sheep rings, place one 1" down your fibreglass pole place the other 1" up from the bottom of the pole. Take your top line form 1/2 of a clove hitch in the line, place one selvedge mesh in the middle of the clove hitch then form the other half of the clove hitch, slide the clove hitch on the top of the pole so that it touches the rubber ring, pull line tight. Take a screw driver or something similar ( a fid is ideal
  5. Get you fenn trap in the fired position, bring the safety catch over. Rest a piece of 1/4" bar ( srewdriver shank etc) on top of the safety. Bring the brass tongue over the bar press down on the end of the tongue with your thumb. This will put a slight curve in it. This will now make your fenn trap set "light". Master Hunter
  6. Hi rob the safety catch supplied by trapworks .co.uk sound very much like the safety catch I designed several years ago. At the time, I was trapping rats. using 110 and 116 bodygrip traps I found the safety on them was too cumbersome and caught up on the traps and caused mis-fires.So I designed a small safety catch made from thin (1mm) stainless wire. this comprises of a piece of wire 4" long it is folded into a U shape. in the middle of the U you form a 1/2" circle in the wire. On the two ends of the wire you form 2 1/4 "circles. These are the opposite way round to the one in the middle.
  7. I would reccomend you re-sharpen your points the taper is to acute (all right for pencils) the taper should be 21/2 - 3 " long. When your poles have dried out harden the points in the ashes of a wood fire for a few minutes. As for the poles being straightened I would reccommend you only cut straight ones to begin with, cut more than what you need tie them all together for drying out so they dry straight, cut them 30" long. Scrap the bark off the top of the poles for about 4" , put a slot in the top like a gypsys wooden peg. This is for pushing the top line into when setting the long net. There
  8. I have got an original youngs net making catalogue and it is like a light peachy buff colour. The mesh size stated in mine for making a long net is for rabbits 2 1/4 knot to knot and 12 meshes wide. Dont forget when this book was written all the materials used where natural fibres.Hemp/Linen etc Which did not stretch. The biggest mesh size I have used in nylon nets is 2 1/4 inch knot to knot made fron multifilament nylon 4z this net is 20 meshes deep and catches ALL size rabbits very well. not bolters.(wee baby rabbits) alan
  9. I would reccomend 9" square mesh 3 meshes deep.Made from 8-10Z nylon. I wouldnt reccomend using 2 1/8 mesh for the middle wall, as you dont want the rabbits to get their heads through the mesh. the usual mesh size for a trammel inner net is 1 3/4 or 2". It is usually 7 meshes of small mesh to every 9" of square mesh. When a rabbit strikes a trammel net it pushes the small mesh through one of the 9" meshes, thats why you dont want bigger than 2" small mesh. Trammels work by actually pocketting the rabbit in the small mesh as it is pushed through the large mesh hope this is of some help. M
  10. jultaylor, It looks as if you need to put a bit of preservative and protection on your ferret box, I would suggest a polyeuathane stained varnish. Jamming your made net between the closed door and the door frame is not good enough to keep your meshes level. This is why your meshes have run out. Do what the other netters have said and take about 3ft of 2mm nylon drawcord and thread it through your meshes about 18" away from where you have finished tie both ends together hang over a hook or as I do, the newel post at the bottom of the stairs. Start to net and if your meshes are not level adjus
  11. cheers mate anybody used it? is it as good as my mates swear by it? ive been told you can give it to a pregnant bitch 5 days before she is due ,to increase the pups chance of surviving,to boost theyre imune system any info would be a help keep your bitch healthy in the first place and there should be no need for drugs when pregnant Ive used synulox on one of my ridgebacks that had 11 puppies and developed mastitis about a week after whelping. One of the side effects of antibiotics on a lactating bitch is that it concentrates the milk. I have been breeding rhodesians for about 25 y
  12. Tyla, Dont put purse net rings on the ends of your net or stakes. You should have a knot formed through your last selvedge mesh on the end of your net, on the bottom and top line.Undo this knot, which should be a double overhand knot. Pull the line through so you have approx 4ft of loose line, top and bottom, Both ends of your net. Re tie selvedge knot. Then pass top line through the circle in your end pin, then tie this line to the other line, this enables the end pin to find its own centre on the lines. So looking at your net at the end pin section when set, the bottom line will run parallel
  13. AF, The method I use to dispatch grey squirrels from cage traps is, first of all find a 2ft long canvas sack that will fit over the front of your cage trap, something like a ferret carrying bag. Place the mouth of the bag over the trap by several inches, then take a small tool pencil/keys/knife etc and open the door of the trap up. persuade the squirrel to bolt into the sack by moving your body position. When squirrel has entered , grasp mouth of sack and gradually restrict movement of squirrel till its head is in one corner of sack. Grasp squirrel in the sack around shoulders with one hand

  15. The best size is the size that suits your ground. Heavy ground about 8". Lighter ground about 10". You can always re-sharpen a long peg if it breaks on the tip, you cant always do this with a short peg, as it will be too short when resharpened. You dont have to knock your pegs straight down into the ground if you are using your long pegs on heavy ground you can knock them in at an angle. Drill your hole in the peg about an inch to an inch and a quarter from the top. The best wood to use is elderberry. Cut some nice pieces 3-4 inch across, whatever lenght you need ,between any knots in the woo
