This is Chuck, what do you think?
morton replied to welshnutter69's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
If i was to take the plunge with a bull cross id probably seek out a genuine owner who seeks no recognition of the dogs prowess, someone who works the dogs to the standard they where bred for and feels no need to big themselves or their dogs up.I certainly would,nt go down the road of using a stud that probably needs to be doubled up,is left to pick up as much punishment as possible so the signs of conflict can be seen as some sort of badge of honour by an owner that to prove their own shortcomings lives on a dogs reputation,so ill pass, but thanks for the generous offer. -

I think you want people to say what a super duper dogman you are because youve learnt to take piccys of a chewed up bullcross, congratulations, what next?. -
At certain times some pups will need a little extra assistance to bring out the chasing instinct in them, when all else fails it can pay dividends to play the game a little less sporting, there is no need to broadcast the fact, just do what needs to be done to assist a reluctant pup.

So the dog ran 200yds leaving blood prints and that impressed you, well fair play to the dog pity about the sheer ignorance of the owner, don,t worry though you will have plenty of admirers on here.
-
Dont be in to big a hurry to slip, select yor runs so as to give the dog the easiest chance of catching.
-
I like to see a dog use its brain, knowing when to run and how to press the advantage to gain a catch, they can be selective and will miss the odd one that a full on dog could have accounted for,im not interested in catching everything that gets up so don,t mind failing on a run or two.Smarter dogs stay relatively injury free and work well into older age,the bolder dogs seem to pick up more niggling and more serious injury,s and have a propencancy to quit completely on bigger stuff.

A drawing dog can be a very handy tool.
-
Will learn better if you teach him, start the dog on low jumps and work up as the confidence and ability grows.
-
Seems to be the way its done now with lurchers, what a dog looks like on a lead is more important than true working ability, most of the young lads now seem disinterested in function and prefer visual and size attributes.

How does the partnership actually work in the field? with the style of hunting of the Saluki and Gos,how do they compliment each others hunting requisites?.

Run ins with the law and keepers yrs ago to now
morton replied to Roebuck Rod's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Its not so long ago that you had more than a reasonable chance of poaching sucessfully,i still ended up at Skipton magistrates a time or 2,now everybody as a mobile which puts the odds in the landowner and policemans favour, the Hunting ban does,nt help, what the police had to let you go for in the past they can now arrest and charge you for.It was a lot easier than it is now. -
Good permission is hard come by,check the land out on your own,let the landowner get used to you before you start trailing others with you,to many spoilers and boomerangs about.

£12.65p,lad who lost couldnt pay up and had to emigrate, all because of a bit of dog envy and betting beyond his means.
-
The main reason for a lack of quality in Beddy,s,and most other types to a lesser extent,is that people buy then breed out of untested dogs that would not make the grade as genuine workers, then there is the dogs whos exploits in the field dont stand up to closer inspection, yet the pups are sold as from working lines.

Try and get out with someone who will show you the ropes,id say with a little advice you will soon have the dog catching. Its always difficult to first get started, just try and make sure you pick up the correct advice, good luck.

WAT DO U HUNT Rabbits and rats, all on permission and all within the letter of the law.It never ceases to amaze me though, the size variation in rabbits, and the ones you can eat all seem to taste different,i even had one last month that i struggled to fit into my big pan.
-
I always mean to finish the season with what i start with, ruling out death and serious injury,s.Any shortcomings in the dogs will be down to me,which will hopefully be rectified the following season,or the one after that if thats what it takes.
-
I always find it takes2 or 3 seasons to get a dog competent at different aspects of daylight hunting, the same dog will be lamping to a decent standard after 2 or 3 sessions. My dogs work both,i prefer daylight hunting and lamp to bag up on bunnys plus whatever is chased at night is more discreet. An intelligent bred dog soon learns to adjust to different scenarios.

People will always have a preference for a certain type or breed of terrier,so go for the type you prefer but make sure its bred from stock that will do the work that best suits your needs.

can a bushing dog be used as a digging dog
morton replied to hunter 1's topic in Earthdogs & Working Terriers
Ive always used my terriers for bushing,it can cause problems but thats the price you pay with working terriers, the next time out could always be their last, youve got to know the lie of the land and work them with locators on.How many people with terriers worked solely off a lead have dug to bunny,s?.A Lakey dog i lost last year was a cracking busher, yet would enter where rabbits ran in always found his stuff,my Beddy as been dug to rabbits a couple of times,i saw it as a bonus[glorified ferreting]i like rabbit hunting. Some terriermen see it as a waste of a good terrier[bushing]but to me there -
recipe for the best collie grey lurcher?
morton replied to CarraghsGem's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Working hill Border collie dog over coursing Greyhound bitch would be my ideal collie/grey. -
The dog chases sheep, thats the owners bad training not the dogs fault, this may come as a shock so sit down,a dog that chases sheep is NOT stockbroken.
-
Deerhound x, will sort out ferral cats so i know he has drive and he's hard-mouthed with rabbits and long-ears. He is stock broken but i kept him in with an injury for a couple of weeks and as soon as i took him out he went for a sheep, maybe i should keep him in for a while before going out next? obviously the dog is not stock broken then, thats the first thing you want to sort out.Deerhound crosses, especially the larger types, mature slowly, the dog is possibly a little young for fox yet.Leave it until next season. There is plenty of other work for the dog until then.
-
I think we can all agree terriers will self enter, then there can be the problem of exiting,i think you will find that the dog will need a little help getting out sometimes, then there is the problem of a dog entering where it cannot get out with any sort of help,we all know places to stay clear of.That is why it is advisable to tag along with an experienced terrierman,he will show you the ropes and steer you in the right direction, its not the dog that needs the education sometimes.Make use of somebody elses expertise, thats how they probably learnt.
-
And the 1st mistake you may make could be the last for the dog, find someone experienced to show you the ropes, the more you learn the more chance the dog has.
