  1. Glad to hear it! I have made a few but it is not something I enjoy doing as it's time consuming. Oz
  2. Yes it can, if it's too runny put it in the fridge to firm it up a little before you use it, it the cold weather shove it on a radiator for a while to warm it up and soften it, Oz
  3. Hello Gaffer, no I have never known it so dead, for repairs, alterations or bespoke work, my colleagues are saying the same thing apart from one who works in leathergoods (we both trained together in Cordwainers college) and works for a high class company. She was commissioned to make a bespoke handbag out of crocodile skin, which is hard work to use as you have to becareful cutting the scales as well as matching and blending the scales in.It was sold to a customer in Saudi for £14,000 now that's the sort of custom I'd like! Oz
  4. Not much going on in the saddlery workshop at the moment, seems dead all round but I think it's the economic climate, no one is buying much! I have had Roman leather armour in for repair and restoration that is owned by the National Theatre, was in a very sorry state of repair! I was asked by a local design centre to restore it as much as I could as they had hired it from the National Theatre and were making items for the Minack theatre based in Cornwall. The Minack are putting a play on locally to me (Anthony and Cleopatra) hence the need to for local company to sort the armour out! I was g
  5. Great job gaffer, can't believe how different it looks! Not worth putting it on the crappy air rifle I've got, the tapes probably worth more than my gun! Oz
  6. I would get to the vet asap, better safe than sorry, toxins can damage and break down internal organs, the longer in their system the worse it gets, good luck, hope your dog's ok
  7. Nice dog, I've got a saluki x whippet too, real nice dogs
  8. This is a copy of a Medieval Brigadine (leather waistcoat) around circa 1450 AD, it goes over chail mail as in photo. I was asked to design and make it for my ex's Son who's a Blacksmith, he's going to make and rivet metal plates inside it. The chain mail it's on here in the photo is authentic English pattern, it's all hand riveted links unlike a lot of mail seen today which is butted together and not riveted. He'll be fighting in this and showed me the blood stains on the undercoat where he took a blow from an axe slicing into his elbow at his last re enactment!
  9. Once it's actually cracked it's very unlikely to be able to repair it unfortunately, you may be able to get some conditioner in to it but it probably won't ever be as good as it was before it dried out completely, Oz
  10. I use www.landywoods.co.uk they come round once a month (to me on the North Downs in Surrey) and are good value, email and ask them for an up to date price list I used to use the dogfood company but my dogs didn't like the meat so had to change to landywoods
  11. Thanks Bulldoug, cheque's in the post mate!
  12. Try getting shoulder (bridle shoulder) for a whippet collar, it isn't as heavy duty or as thick as bridle butt but will be easier to handle, shape, cut and work if you are a beginner. Basic tools, you can get away with a stanley knife for cutting and shaping if you are careful, you'll need an edging tool to take the edges off to make a smooth rounded edge that doesn't cut in to the dog's neck. Then you will need to have some edge stain to stain the edges down (not edge dye it's a spirit based dye that is carcinogenic so avoid using any spirit dyes/stains, use water or acrylic based edge stai
  13. I have my Grandad's cut throat, never been brave enough to try it though! I use the internet to get cheap razor blades for my Gillette, shop prices are just a rip off.
  14. A great dog, he's a credit to you!
  15. I had an abbey order last week, they still managed to get it wrong, after all these years of using them (25) they still don't get it right!
  16. 30 grand is not really a lot to be honest, it was more than that but I've scaled it down to specialise in certain areas now
  17. LOL, Yes, you do tend to collect things, I have around £30,000 worth of tools, fittings, materials and leather, last count I had 22 hides in my workshop and growing! Oz
