1. http://www.unicornleather.co.uk/leather_conditioning_and_cleaning.html Advice on keeping leather in tip top condition includes a basic recipe to make your own leather conditioner
2. went in to meltdown pretty quick this one! I hope they catch the b*****d who is doing this, hard to say who it might be, we just don't know but whoever it is, I would like to poison them. There are further pictures and updates on the Sussex facebook group here. https://www.(!64.56:886/BBCSussex?pnref=story scroll down their page and you'll see the evidence
3. me neither mate, total scumbags- not only dogs at risk but all wildlife in the food chain
4. This was passed on to me by a friend, please share it. WARNING TO ALL DOG WALKERS AROUND THE CUCKOO TRAIL.... Walking along the cuckoo trail in Hailsham between the carpark and the bridge under London road at approximately 18:00hrs on the 8th of April I have found in several separate places, a quantity of cocktail sausages that appear to have been as of yet a unknown substance deliberately inserted into them. They look like slug pellets and had started to liquefy with the moisture of the sausage, which of course could be fatal to dogs or small children. This post is purely to make people aware
5. It's 2 inches wide, wide enough to protect his neck if he gets attacked again
6. Well, my mate's dog, a Doberman keeps getting beaten up by other dogs. He's the softest dog you have ever met so doesn't stand up for himself and was suffering an image problem! My mate asked me to make him a super dog collar with spikes to give him some street cred So, here it is,made it yesterday, out of bridle butt leather, lined with soft hide, all handmade and hand stitched. He seems to like it and it suits him, maybe other dogs will leave him be now and the owners will think he's hard! (he's not!) CLOSE UP OF HAND STITCHING
7. Leprevo will probably want to sell you a complete piece (side) Try looking on ebay for a piece the size you need. A piece of upholstery leather might work, it's not that thick (about 1.4mm) but would be easy to sew on a domestic sewing machine with a strong enough needle. Oz
8. Try asking your local Saddler, I'm very busy with work at the moment or I would have offered, Oz Saddler est 1988
9. I have seen lots of so called "rolled" leatherwork on internet auctions and websites recently which is not rolled work. For anyone who is thinking of buying a piece of rolled work whether a bridle or a dog lead/collar here are a few pointers to look out for. IF you are happy with cheap imitations then fine, this article won't concern you, if you want the real thing read on. Firstly, proper rolled work involves splitting the leather thickness down, adding a central round core and "rolling" the leather round to give it the shape. Then it should be hand stitched down one side and then finally wor
10. I'll photo a lead set tomorrow I made up a few years ago for someone, see what you think,Oz
11. My 3 are on the barf diet, they also get raw virgin coconut oil and diatomaceous earth. http://www.unicornleather.co.uk/coconut_oil_for_dogs.html
12. yes as gaffer says, it will go that far but it will lose it's width and end up narrower and the hide will be thinner. If you soak it in water as suggested earlier, it will stretch but then you'll have to replace the fat content you lost through soaking and stretching with good quality leather conditioner (not just oil)
13. Don't use oil only on veg tanned leather, it really doesn't do it much good. It doesn't condition the leather as well as greases and fats do. Old leather that was tanned many years ago is entirely different in it's make up than todays hides, the old leather can take neatsfoot oil, new modern hides can't the Ph is wrong, neatsfoot will make the fibres of the leather go soggy, weaken them and stretch them. If you saw the fibres of the hide under a microscope after oiling it, you'd see what I mean. Conditioner is far superior to oil. Any conditioner that contains lanolin, tallow and beeswax is
14. It's as tough as old boots, we use it sometimes in our trade for girth straps as it won't break, it just sretches like buggery under load. If you start off with 14 inch girth straps (usual length on a GP saddle) you'll end up with 20" eventually like dressage girth straps! Personally I don't like it , it stinks too, I use rawhide with a breaking strain of upwards of 5,000lbs per square inch.
15. As gaffer has said, Abbey & Leprevo are the main ones but you'll need to be a business to open an account with them
16. It'l be a chrome leather gaffer, quite durable
17. I use it as a adhesive, lots on the net to be had
18. I used to slip my Lurcher after rabbits with the old type which I made with a short handle, I used a length of polypropylene webbing sewn together on the machine to house the line and made a nice a leather lurcher collar for it to work with. The fittings I got from my saddlery supplier.Worked well.
19. Thanks Gaffer, I've spoken to Benn but I don't do carving, tooling or embossing, that's more of a leathercraft thing rather than Saddlery. Benn try here, go in the forum on this site and ask around, there are some UK men on there not just USA leatherworkers. http://leatherworker.net/content/ Oz
