  1. i have only had my 1st dog ever and i use her for my shooting.

a lab retriever. but anyway i just let her sniff the ducks i brought home when she was too young to go with me

and ever since ive took her out she has retrieved everything for me including birds that are still alive.

i honestly think i am just lucky but i tell you what shes only 1 year and shes turning out a cracker even my mate said so thats had gundogs for years

the best advice i can give is keep taking her and itl soon learn.

    hope this helps

    thanks sean

Cheers buddy, Thats what I did with that duck, just let her sniff it until she was more confident, once she was used to it she was carrying it everywhere she went :) Hopefully next time we're out now she will get a warm one back to hand :)

  2. Had a amazing night the other night, went wild fowling for the first time ever. Set up around the flight pond with the 2 boys with me at other points, we waited as the light faded, I was looking about when I heard it, BANG, I turn round to see my mate Dai had dropped a Teal over the top of him but missed the second one, I pulled the gun up and lined it up and BANG, I missed it, the bird pulled to the left and I gave it the other barrel, BANG, I hit it square on , down it came but it was a runner, so Dai told me to get onto it quick and dispatch is ASAP.

I sent out my young lab, shes 14 months and retrieving all things before, dummys, dummy with fur / feather and also cold pheasants all fine, So I sent her out to find this duck. It had gone about 20 foot from where it dropped, the lab scented it and off she went, the ground is covered with rabbits so I was worried that she would not be able to find it as it had gone into alot of cover, I saw her work all over and then she barked, She had found the duck, tried to pick it up but it was still alive and moving so she wouldnt. I ran to where she was and picked it myself and dispatched it there and then.

I was very chuffed as it was my first ever teal :) and was found by my own dog :) shame she didnt retrieve it lol. Anyone got any tips on how to give her some more encouragement, we went her onto another duck on the pond n she dragged it back to the edge by the wing but wouldnt properly pick it up and bring it right in :(

  3. whats ur opinion on them for beating and picking up which is better ive got a cocker pup cumming on the 23 of agust never had 1 before just had springers also havent got a name for it yet so any help with that aswell thanks in advance lee

If you have a cocker coming then why ask if you should get a cocker or a springer ?? Both dogs are great gundogs, just depends on the trainer!

  4. i would be careful with the dogs age,its still a pup,ive had springers that aint really matured until 12 months, try and do too much training or correcting you could ruin it,is it your only dog? are you rushing to have it ready for this season? personally io would ease off on this dog and go back to basic stuff

It is my only dog and my first. Im not trying to rush for season just think im trying to get the perfect dog lol. Thanks for advice, a will keep at the basics the now till he's a bit older.

You'd be surprised how many people ruin there dogs by rushing ahead when what there trying to do is make there dog perfect. I did the same with my lab. Take a deep breath, take a step back with the training, just because the dog is 6 months doesnt mean you start training, Take a month off mate, see what hes like then :)

  5. When I got my 8 week old ESS I put her straight in with my 1 year old lab, both bitches, They play, fight and generally cause havoc enjoying themselves in the garden, house and tonight down the pub lol, but once in the kennel dont do any of that and just go and cwtch up in bed, they have never tried to play with each other in there haha. Weird that is lol

  6. Why on earth are you training a 10 week old spaniel to heel ? At this time its just following you, it doesnt know its "heeling"

Train the dog not to pull on the lead and simple things like sit and wait, then leave it machure before you start training.

Let it be a pup!!! Would you send a 6 year old to university ? I think not. Calm down mate theres no rush :p

  7. A lot of people have big problems with there dogs retrieving and theres a simple answer pay me £100.00 and i will guarentee i will get your dog retrieving within 1 week, if i dont then you dont pay a penny (not even kenneling fees) I dont use any harsh methods, i dont pen them in so they cant run off, no e collars.

I have just looked at your post and you are only down the road from me.

Is this for real ? :clapper::doh:

  8. It all depends on your personal preference, i have 3 springers and 1 cocker they both do the same jobs and do them well, the only difference is the cocker is a lot hotter and is constantly on the move even if we are stopped having lunch she is busy, busy. Some people find the springers easier to train because they are not as busy as the cockers.Good luck on your decision it is not easy to make a decision like that.

Bloody hell lol, the Springers I have seen are hard enough to keep still for 2 minutes, if cockers are worse then I think I know which I will be going for :) lol

  9. well got the lab hopefully for duck flighting and water work, although I would train the spaniel for this I wouldnt be relying on it to do this really, mostly looking for a dog to train to flush from heavy cover :) And to take beating and rough shooting :)

  10. Right not looking at the moment as put off getting another dog until my 1 year old lab is older, machurer and better trained (hopefully) lol!

But I have decided as rather have another lab I would like to get a spaniel more for there hunting as the lab will hunt but not so much as a spaniel, I was just wondering what you guys would go for ?

At the moment my dad and me paid half each for my labrador (Which I wish we never had) as I want her kennel'd but they keep putting her in the house and spoiling her, but then when shes naughty and doesn't listen its my fault :wallbash: so with the next one I will be doing it all myself, the dog will be kennel'd 24/7 with a padlock on the kennel to keep the interfering buggers out :bye:

Now then, what would you suggest would make a good companion to my labrador, will be good with the family (still want it to interact with the family just not as much) and be a good hunter and ofcourse easily trained ? The lab is my first gundog, she is going ok and I also go upto a Lab field trialer for help now and then with training but shes a bit head strong at times, If she spends the afternoon in her kennel and run she listens very well but if she spends the afternoon on the settee shes a bit headstrong

I was thinking a Springer Spaniel :hmm: I think there stunning but am also tempted to get a Cocker spaniel :hmm: both seem lovely, I posted up my situation so you know what Im after and wondered what you guys think ? It shouldn't be for atleast another year anyways

  11. he is a 6/7 month lab

    1. (my dog as a bed in his kennel and one in his run) he always drags his indoor one into the run, dose this mean he dosent want it?!

    2. he eats shit, not sheep, horse etc. but dog. to the extent it hadnt reached the ground from coming out of one dog before it had gone in the front end of mine!

    3. he is also constantly eating grass... is he missing some thing from his diet? (hes on a 3:1 mix of beta puppy and adult, with 1 or 2 eggs a week and occasionaly tin dog meat)

    1. No idea, does he pull it out and lie on it? Or pull it out and then go in without ut ?

    2. Some dogs do it mate. You just have to keep him away from it and let him know its not ok!!

    3. Some dogs need a bit of grass to settle the stomach or just need some in there diet. Maybe try adding some chopped up veg to the kibble! IUn the wild the dogs would get veg from eating the animal it kills stomach!

  12. if you hav'nt got a lot of time to bring it on then do'nt get it or you will end up with two dogs you ar'nt to happy with and you have them for 15 years .you got to be fair to the pup.

to get it for working in cover YES

    As a companion no

    You fanciad one no

you realy want a springer yes.

this is only my take on things but you did aske for opinions atb.

I do really want a springer, always wanted 1. Worked with them alot and know what they are like! It is for working in cover to the gun, the companion to my other dog is just a bonus and I do have the time to bring it on :) Although I might let this one go and look for one closer to home as at this current time relocating the kennel and having alot done to the house so will prob give it a few weeks/months till a more convenient time and then start looking for one :)

  13. Mines the same mate, she will wander off to look for dogs to play with, Shes 1 now and getting better. Seems happy to just lay in the garden more, but if she sees/hears a dog she will still go :( Just need to secure your garden, I also put her in a run when I cant watch her!

  14. I myself have some of those kennel run panels. Very easy to do and much cheaper than buying those timber kennel + runs. Panels are about £50 each depending on how big you want it.

I got mine 2nd hand from a mate who'd finished with his Mrs n kept a lurcher ar her house, so I got a bargain. There very easy and good if you have a corner in your garden as then you only need 2 :) lol! Best to stick on top of concrete though, you can just have a small dog house in them then :)

  15. You might be better off with a spaniel mate, MUCH easier to train for a first timer, My uncle used to have one that would flush for his birds of prey when he was young! :) Also great dogs to shoot over!

  16. As some of you may have read, am looking for a companion for my 1 year old lab bitch and a dog that will be more eager to hit the cover and thorns to flush rabbits as I have a new permission with tons of rabbits but all under thick thorn bushes!

Always fancied a English Springer anyways, and also another dog to keep my bitch company in the kennel so they can be houses outside together fulltime rather than in the house good.gif Dont like leaving her for too long all alone! Anyways had a quick scout about and spotted this lil nipper, only bitch left in the litter. Here are the details, what do you think ?

    There asking £400 for her!

  17. Unfortunately i think you have been give a bit of misleading information.

On a very basic level a lab is too big to get into the tight bushes well, think how big a rabbit run is. My old golden would try to get into the bushes but was simply too big

The only people i have ever heard claim their lab hunts as well as a spaniel are lab owners and the ones i have seen arent even close.

Have you tried to hunt her in any of the training so far? (doubtful if the bloke helping you is a field trialler)

Have you introduced her to the gun? (probably not the best situation to do it in)

I think that you might have to accept that a lab isnt the ideal bushing dog and that she will hunt the more open stuff but just pick up for the tight.

Dont give up on her yet though, she is only a year old and maybe will get some confidence later on.

Yer she has been introduced to the gun, started off bangin plates n such n worked upto a starter pistol, then the shogtun, she is fine :)

Havent done any hunting with the guy I go training with but have taken her beating and she hunts very well through the cover but not into the bushes/bramble! :(

Seen a 3 n half springer bitch for decent money might be a good companion for her :)
