  1. With numbers like that it doesn’t take long to go from being fun to being work... and that’s a good nights work as well gents.
  2. All my own fault and not caliber specific. Just saying that for all concerns about barrel wear by neglecting basic maintenance I made the whole thing irrelevant? After a busy but wet winter the chamber got so pitted in the first one the brass was fire forming round it and getting stuck. The second one was a cheap second hand knee jerk purchase to replace the first. It had a 26” barrel which I had cut down and the gunsmith miss-measured it and turned it into a 16” barrel?. The one I’ve got now is the business?
  3. Norma 50gr factory rounds move at 3600 and are crazy accurate out of my CZ 527. Airgun like recoil. Heard good stuff about the 22/250 mind. I originally bought the .223 as I read somewhere that the 22/250 has a shorter barrel life... after various maintenance issues im on my 3rd .223?
  4. You’ll be getting a closer look at the third buck down Rob?.
  5. Cheers all. Apart from the stinker the others were nice clean carcasses although the larger buck had a case of pleurisy.
  6. Started pretty early here then got shut down by the change in the weather. Would have liked to have got out more.
  7. Cheers fellas. Yes it a quality spot and lots to be done on the cull front, extraction is going to involve some graft as the tracks are too far gone and need grading. That manky buck was heaving with ticks, keds and lice / fleas Tim. A real state???
  8. Following morning and another 5am start. I spotted a nice 6 point stag in the tall bracken and was making progress towards him when a roe buck spotted me and barked from 50m away. He was presented a good shot shot figuring a buck in the hand is worth a stag in the bush I put the bead on him and dropped him with a head shot. By the time I got to him, which was no more than a couple of minutes his head was plastered in flies. Gralloching him with all them about and he’d be fly blown it ten minutes so I covered the head with dry leaves and left him in the shade. Moving on and another b
  9. This weekend I was down in Dorset visiting a relative who been unwell and also checking out a new bit of woodland I’ve taken the deer management on. Parking up at the house I was just unloading my gear and this massive hedgehog strolled past me right in the middle of the street! Not wanting to see the poor bugger squashed I grabbed a bucked and got him into it... quickly remembering how prickly they are! The sight of him cheered my relative up no end (although he flinched when I said it was for Sunday lunch!) and minutes he was released into their large garden. A 4:50am start the ne
  10. I reckon I have more time to go stalking during term time than when the kids are off on holiday! Managed to nab a few hrs here and there, the change in weather has made things far less predictable, unfortunately coinciding with the time I could of get out on the roe rut. Managed to trim a couple more cull bucks from the local area, both of which came to the call. The second one here was actually a half decent weight which sucked as I’d left the roe sack behind and had to drag it nearly 2k to the truck. The stubbles made the drag hard work - it half bald by the time I arrived a
  11. Nice one guys - rutting hard round here still
  12. Good news mate - those heads cleaned up nicely ?
  13. Yes mate - I managed to cape him without incident which makes a change.
  14. Thanks gents. Yes Deker, I was pretty lucky to land this place. Nice stalking woodland when the weather is so hot makes anything in the open feel uncomfortable.
  15. Yesterday evening the weather report had forecast fire and brimstone but it never happened. Up to the estate last minute and I saw a buck skipping through a field of cattle but appearing to slow up after it jumped the fence and entered the treeline. Approaching quietly I saw the buck but there was too much cover in the way and eventually he moved out of sight. Continuing to scan I saw a fox asleep under a tree so took advantage and head shot it. At this the buck moved into a clearing so a quick reload on the straight pull and down he went too. Plenty of does and fawns about as well
  16. A couple of bucks recently. One was the fella from a few weeks back that couched right in front of me it wasn’t safe... he was in exactly the same place and did exactly the same thing. This time however there was a massive pile of waste, soiled straw, about 9ft, which was nice and dry from the decent weather. From the top I had the perfect prone shot and this time the back of his head wasn’t so lucky. It gets dark so late now I was knackered and back at the larder I had a complete brain fart and decided to cape it for my mate Tim, best cape job I’d ever done... only rea
  17. Superb write up and excellent account of your trip. More of the same please!
  18. I left a boars head in a feed sack at the bottom of the garden for 6 months... that was pretty damn putrid and yes the flesh fell off with just a shake??
  19. Tim’s buck was a murder buck in more ways than one - Here he isTim capes and ready to go - 50lb clean I reckon! Next time you think about pulling the trigger be a little more considerate hey! ?
  20. Me too - From the look of his teeth he was no spring chicken so I was amazed he didn’t have more sense. Good to have you down mate and glad you’ve gone home happy?
  21. Got lucky with that one mate as I don’t know where the hell he came from. The shepherd rotates the sheep every ten days as well so well lucky to see him! Great shot again with the pressure on as he was properly switched onto us and going at the barking.
  22. Couldn’t have worked out better that first buck and it was a good shot off the sticks mate?. Tim doesn’t have a pic of his buck so I’ll take one when I cape it later. Very unreasonable of him to shoot suck a big one so far away from the truck!
  23. Defo bullet mate... a lot of the head was missing on the other side. Not like that biggun you had with a massive hole in its head after the rut a few years back!
