  1. There are 3 guns available in our small DIY syndicate on the Bordley Estate which is about 8 miles from Skipton. The ground extends to just over 2500 acres and has a wide variation of woodland, moorland and rough ground. There is a fair amount of walking involved and you need to be reasonably fit. A dog is a must and although a 4 x4 is desirable it is not essential as there are farm roads to gain access to the meeting points. We are putting down 700 pheasants this year after a record season last year (48.5 % return). There are 3 or 4 walked up shoot days from August (grouse day) into early October when we switch to mainly driven shooting (beat one stand one) where there will be approx. 12 days from October to Jan. We shoot on Saturday with the exception of boxing day and 1st Feb. Bags are usually in the 30 to 40 bracket but I hope to have a couple of 50+ days this year. Some help will be required on working parties (MAINLY Feb to June) and a small amount of feeding in the first 2 weeks of July. After that all feeding is taken care of. Subs are £525 plus a one off payment of £250 to cover the cost of the quad bike. This is refundable should any guns leave but reduces by £50 per year as the quad depreciates in value. Members can bring a guest providing there is space to fit them in. Pest control is also available outside of organised shoot days. For more details PM me and I will give you my number to talk further and arrange a meeting to view the land etc.

  2. Due to one of our members messing us about and not paying his subs there is 1 space available in the shoot (again!!) Please PM me if you would be interested in taking the gun or would like more details etc. Most of the hard work has been done and the birds are coming on well and should provide great sport over the season. We had a our first walked up rough shoot the other day and although the weather was not great we had an enjoyable day with a mixed bag of rabbit, hare, fox, snipe and partridge.

  3. Well had a call today of my feo saying that my request for my licence to be opened was granted...... :boogy:

Well chuffed as you could imagine so licence will be in the post tomorrow morning,i was quite pleased in how quick i had a reply as i e-mailed them on the 9th of this month (west mercia).

Thought id share my news with you folk

Just out of interest how long had you had your FAC? I'm only asking as my shot gun cert is due for renewal next year and I thinking of making it a co terminus licence and asking for my FAC to be made open at the same time as I will have had it 4 years by then.

  4. There is 1 gun available in our small beat 1 stand 1 syndicate. There are over 2500 acres of land to shoot on and over the season we will have a mixture of walked up and driven shooting over a total of 17 Saturdays. We release 450 to 500 poults and there are good numbers of wild game plus pests / vermin too which include Grouse, Snipe, Partridge, Woodcock, Duck, Rabbit, Hare, Fox, Roe Deer, Pigeon and Crow. There is a real mixture of land that we shoot over from woods to grazed fields with moorland in between. This is a DIY shoot so some work and feeding will be required over the year (approx. 8 to 10 days each).

The shoot is at Bordley and is located between Hetton and Malham.

Bags average 20 to 30 per day depending on weather and shooting ability as some birds are very challenging.

A dog is essential and a 4x4 is desirable but access can be gained by car if care is taken along the tracks which can be rough in places. Members will need to have a decent level of fitness as the land is anything but flat and there is some distance between some of the woods etc. We would prefer guns to have BASC membership but if you have sufficient insurance cover with another organization that is fine.

  5. I was in the gun shop today and I was shown an ex demo (used once at a fair) Yildiz .410 O/U non ejector model. I am thinking of getting it for my son for Christmas. On first impressions the gun looks well made but basic and functional. The gun fits my son well and should last him a few years until he can step up to a 20 bore. I have no experience with the make but have known of their existence for some time. It looks to be a great starter gun but there are not many about on the 2nd hand market. Is that because not many are sold or is it that owners love them and can't bring them selves to part with them? I think for the price I have been offered it for he could use it for a few years and as long it has been well looked after should get most of the money back come trade up time.

Any advice on this gun or alternatives would be greatly received

  6. Just a quick follow up to this little problem. i have just been giving the rifle a quick clean with a dry patch and removing the mod, no brush and solvent. Rifle has held its zero fine and I have had no misses. i have been eliminating all the possible causes 1 by 1 and now the only thing i hve not done it give the rifle a full clean. i have attached a pic of a group of 3 shots at 150yds on air rifle target. The first shot was a little high as i had just run 300 yds to re position the target (not best practice i know but the mist was coming down fast and i didn't want to miss the window of opertunity) and my heart was beating a little faster than normal. Anyway i am still happy with the group and it should be good enough to pas the DSC1 when i take it later in the year unless the nerves kick in!!!

  7. If the guy has managed to shoot that many then there must be a fair number of foxes about as it would be near impossible to get every one in that space of time. Foxes are pests not game and far too many people are treating it a sport first and pest control second. Fox numbers have been controlled for 100's of years and still there are too many in places. As foxes are not used for food then you dont need to be sensible about how many you "harvest"

  8. I have a pair of 30mm Warne scope rings in as new condition (no marks etc)
which I have taken off my rifle due to buying a new scope which has a 1"
tube to replace the old 1 which was fecked. The old scope was a Nikko Sterling
Eurohunter 3-12x56 and the rifle is a Howa 1500 which gave approx 2mm clearance
between rifle and the objective lens.

  9. Most nights when me and my mate go out lamping we see the same fox in the same field and we never get the chance for a shot. It never stops still. I'm not saying it runs off at speed but it just trots across the field. It doesn't look too bothered about the lamp as it doesn't change it's behaviour. It is always seen at a distance of 150 to 300m and is not interested in any calls and usually has some form of cover between us. Only once has it stopped still for a few seconds but then there was no safe backstop so no shot taken even though the cross hairs were on the kill zone. Not had any problems with other foxes on this land but this bugger is giving us the run around. Any tips on how to approach this next time we see him?

  10. I was out last night foxing when the hailstone and snow came down hard for about an hour. On returning home I noticed that the scope had misted up on the inside. I have left it out overnight but it is still so misty I cant see anything through it. I bough the scope 2nd hand so Have no idea how old it isd or if it is still under warantee. Can you advide who I should conatct if possible or any methods i can use to get rid of the mist without damaging the scope.

  11. If you doing some rough shooting dont bother with the fancy wood on a grade 5 gun as it is bound to get scratched and get some small dings and beside you budget wouldn't cover the price of 1. Get a lower grade stock and spend a few hrs stripping and re oiling the stock making it look much better. After the game season is over I will be doing the same to the stocks on my shotguns. You cant go wrong with a Miroku O/U. Great value for money and built on a good proven action. Why pay the extra for a Browning when the Miroku is basicly the same only cheaper.
