  1. Check these out, all legal to buy and own!!!!!!!! Looks like saftey takes a back seat at times and there is even some humour in the 2nd clip. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dSp7CipN1pw
  2. I too have the Howa 1500 in .243 with stainless barrel and action and a laminte thumb hole stock but as its my first centre fire rifle I have nothing to comapre it to. For me it feels well buit, was great value for money and it is more than accurate enough for me. It was like new when i picked it up so hopefully I will get many years of good use from it.
  3. I would not rely on the firearms dept sending out the forms. I would print them off yourself and send them off in plenty of time so that your old certificate doesn't expire before the new one is sent out.
  4. Looking to get a bi pod that I change between my .22lr and .243. What size would you suggest as it will be used for rabbits on the .22 and fox / deer on the .243 and any other makes than Harris worth considering?
  5. All the info and forms you need can be found here http://www.basc.org.uk/en/departments/firearms/certificate-forms-and-fees.cfm As for your rifle choice this will depend on your personal preferance and suitability of the land. A HMR 17 will do both but not all forces allow this for fox and they make more of a mess on rabbits than say a .22lr.
  6. 7 / 8 weeks from application being submitted to getting the FAC but this could have been a week or 2 shorter if I had got my mentors letter in to them sooner.
  7. Just got my first FAC in the post this morning. I put in for a .22lr with mod for ground game / vermin and a .243 with mod for deer / fox. No restrictions on the .22lr other than having a closed ticket. On the .243 I have to have a mentor until the mentor thinks I am safe / experienced enough to go out alone and again this is on a closed ticket. Took about 7 / 8 weeks from posting off the forms to getting the cert.
  8. I hope to have mine soon as it is just waiting on being signed and posted out to me then I can pick up the 2 guns i have placed a deposit on. Then i will just need to hide the bank statements from the Mrs as she has been told that they cost £50 each cos they are 2nd hand. Its all part of the game as I am told a pair of shoes costs £5.
  9. Seems too long to me for what should take no longer than a week to do properly. Maybe I just expect too much or maybe the system is a shambles
  10. you need sec 5 for expan ding ammo fact you must use it on deer under the deer act . It was posts 2 and 4 that I couldn't understand, nowt wrong with your advice as that is what I thought as the application process is still fresh in my mind.
  11. Conflict of advice here so i wont add my views or experience of just having been granted a FAC as this would further confuse things.
  12. I would use them the other way round. The semi auto for the pigeons as the 3 shots will come in handy and you could be making lots of shots so there would be an advantage to less of a kick and use the S/S for the walked up stuff as it is much lighter. As for cartridges use 30 or 32g No6 for both
  13. hi....the gun is going to be mainly used on rabbit and pigeons and once in a blue moon fox will a semi auto be a good gun for this kind of shooting. Semi auto will be great for what you need just make sure it doesn't give you a bad back as most owners seem unable to bend down and pick up their spent cartridges
  14. It comes with a T8 on it. Hopefully FAC should be with me next week so i can report back on how well it performs.
  15. Your weight should not matter if you are holding / mounting the gun correctly and have the correct stance. A semi auto will have much less kick as most of this energy goes into cycling the mecanisim to eject the spent cartridge and load the new one. A S/S will have more kick as they are much lighter and as a result you will feel more of the kick. What is the gun to be used for? If its for clays and you will be taking lots of shots then a heavy gun is a good option but if it is for walked up shooting then something light is best for carrying about as a 8 or 9lb gun weighs a ton after hours of w
  16. I am in exactly the same boat as your self. Just waiting for the paperwork to come through and have placed a deposit on a .243 Howa satinless action with laminate thumb hole stock, with scope, mod and sling and also a CZ 452 american.22lr with scope, mod and sling. Both 2nd hand but in good condition and will last me many years. Rabbits, fox and deer better watch out as I have just made some space in the freezer that needs filling.
  17. My main shooting is 25 miles from home but I have 5 friends who are farmers and can go on their land any time I wish which is all within 5 miles from home. I would travel further for a special trip for stalking or grouse etc but not on a regular basis.
  18. Thats a good video with great info without getting too technical to baffle most of us. All too often the basics are overloked in most things we do.
  19. Very nice work by a real craftsman. I can see this kind of work catching on so prepare yourself for many requests.
  20. Well I had my interview and all went well. No problems about the .243 either but they said I would need a mentor to go out with me until they (the mentor) thought I was ok to go out on my own. There was no timespan or number of outings specified so my mentor just needs to write a letter when they think I am safe to go it alone. I have no problems with this whatsoever and couldnt have been happier about the way the interview went. Now I just need to work out how much money that I dont have I can scrape together to fund the 2 rifles. Looks like its beans on toast and no beer for a while!!
