Sad Loss For Me... R.i.p 'pickle'
fitchet replied to dogs-n-natives's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Sorry for your loss mate fine looking animal atvb for the future. -
I will definitely be investing in a couple of garmin collars apart from the price I don't see why you wouldn't want one on your dog. A couple of times I've only found the dogs by pure luck and I think it would be interesting to see how far they range out.

I think it depends on the type of animal you keep. I have two coursing types which get jogged beside the bike every evening and let of for a good pelt around. The other two I keep arnt really out and out runners so a few good long walks and gradual short lamping sessions blows the cobwebs away and then work work and more work. I like to keep my dogs in reasonable condition all year round anyway so its not a serious amount of work getting them conditioned. Its easy enough once you've got into a routine as soon as they hear the bosses van pull up in the evenings when I'm back from work you

You never realise how Noisy the world is until you are stood in the middle of a huge wood listening for signs of contact. I quite like hunting through the hilly scrub and dead bracken can't beat watching them trying to pounce on the quarry to save dodging fallen trees ect. I all ways stay at the last spot they disappeared at and they normally turn up but one of them will stay with his quarry no matter wat.

I'm looking after a young coursing bred dog at the minute he's had 16 rabbits to date and every single one is brought straight back to hand still alive and handed over without fuss as long as there's no other dogs about. Its owner has never taught it to rietrive and isn't into rabbiting anyway.my feathered bitch tries to bring everything back to me no matter how big.granted a lot won't retrieve but a few do and do it well.

Seen a few pairs sat opposite each other recently out in the fields think its been mild enough for them to breed through had a hell of a lot of rabbits with young too.

Few Pics From This Morning... And One From Yesterday
fitchet replied to RossM's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
How's the dog in the first pic bred mate ? Looks handy. Atb -
Very nice type half cross ?

Can't beat bieng out with the dogs but I do get fed up constantly of worrying about the dogs either getting stolen or getting on something in the wrong place at the wrong time. In fact today me and a feller I work with were up early ready for work but gets to the address no one about so decided not to waste the morning and took the dogs out to a nice route all on public footpath.not hunting genuinely just out for a walk. About a mile in we start seeing a few beaters and after making sure we weren't going to interfere with the shooting carried on even waiting 20 mins so as not to put the bi

Not 100% sure was told it was off buddy.wouldn't be without him now though he's saved a blank on many occasions. Atb

A good friend of mine has CCTV barbed wire galvanised bars on his pens and half a dozen shepherds running around his yard. He's had two attempts on his dogs the second he was very lucky they tried pulling his bitch through the top ofthe pen with a loop around its neck. No matter how many locks or how much security you have if they want them bad enough they will get them. I honestly wish dog thieves all the bad luck in the world its the lowest of the low.

Can't imagine how sickening it is to find your animals taken by scumbags I hope they get returned safely its going on far too much these days. All the best.

I've got a day dog here that's done a fair bit of everything lamping ferreting bushing and although its abit big for rabbits but has never let me down he should be going over a good strong lamp bitch this summer hopefully should end up with a couple of gooduns out that litter. I have a nice feathered bitch that I'd like to put a well tested bull\grey to I think I'd have something good but as hallways its getting access to good blood and enough genuine people to give pups an honest and fair go. Atb

Seen a beaglexwhippet for sale a couple of days ago I didn't see it work the feller kept it in the car looked OK for abit of fun.

Few Pics Of Hare Hawking With Falcons And Sighthounds
fitchet replied to dirtwinger's topic in Falconry
Brilliant pics mate keep them coming looks like dangerous work for the bird ATB. -
Seems to take on damp to easily for me I only use it in ferret boxes now my lot have vetbed blankets and are rugged up after work and fed a warm meal. Its OK if you have nothing else though I used it for a fair bit but got sick of scraping it off paving slabs and if feeding meat gets stuck to it. A mate who trains greyhounds reckons waxed paper is better.

Sounds like youve got it spot on Main thing to watch is that it doesn't keep reopening when it runs I'd rather give a dog that extra week or two to make sure the cut is well healed up and it can handle abit of stick then run the dog too early and be back to square one.atb
-
Mine pickup these sorts of injury habit as where I walk them is flinty as feck I just flush it out with salt water and a syringe every few hours and leave it to heal a friend puts honey on these sorts of cuts but mine would just lick it off anyway. Hope the dog makes a quick recovery.

Well done fellas I think I recognise that bit of land keep at them atb.

Very strong looking lurcher don't see many that sort of shape. All the best with it.

Cracking fuji boots has turned into a very nice animal allways liked the look of him. Atb

i have seen a dozen mixed lurchers/spaniels and terriers made to look silly in a small 14 acre wood. its not the size of the woodland its the cover within it Yep muntjac certainly are masters at disappearing and wasting a lot of the dogs energy. I've almost stepped on them a few times whilst walking through bramble. And even when they do break I've seen a lot use ditches and fences to try and get away unseen. I must admit I would've loved to seen a couple of small hounds hunting them and roe I've seen some YouTube vids of a Teckel type pushing deer out of woodland to be shot.

Whats Your Thoughts, Facebook Strikes Again
fitchet replied to obi2's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
I know mate its deppressing was out yesterday and it was q good day until we bumped into some young kids one of there pups mustve only been about 5 months old one of its ears was chewed to feck and the bitch they had was very poor its spine was like a razor. It makes you sick but it also makes you think twice about the future of surplus pups. -
What Age Do You Start Your Pups Lamping?
fitchet replied to Dranny GLC's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Ive got a pup staying with me at the minute hes been here for about a week now coursing bred and already hes come on abit going through gates and barbed wire you cant beat getting them out nice and early in and around cover and stock. I also like to introduce them to fur quite early so hopefully when they do start searching for scent themselves its slightly familiar to a young dog. Id say what i do with pups though is just socialisation ive learned my lesson before by overmatching a dog when it just wasnt ready for it and its sickening. Atb
