  1. I know what you mean, one of the fields i hunted had a patch of rough ground at the bottom, in there was a set of old harrows, the grass just about covered them, i kept well away, but you can imagine the damage they could cause, i know keeping a check is not 100 per cent, but it can help.
  2. Again maybe it was different for me as my ground was right outside my door, I would hunt it most days,so I did have an idea what was about, I am sorry about your dog Slip hope it mends well, Interesting being called a moron, by someone who does not know me, and has never met me, well I guess that's THL living up to its reputation, no point in me getting a playstation, wouldn't know what to do
  3. Cut your hazel now, you have got till the end of February, not so much sap in them, cut them 25 inches, some say the thickness of your index finger, some the pinky, I cut a mixture, remove the burrs, point them, and round the top. I tie them in small bundles with plastic ties, then put to dry, They cost nowt, easy to prepare, and gets you out in the fresh air, and you are learning an old Country skill.
  4. Feel free to add any story/pictures regarding grews be it working or racing There was a racing whippet near me, I think he was non pedigree, they said he was a top racer his name was Indian Joe, anyone heard of him? also I am surprised no one has any info on what Carl Williams of south Wales is now doing, he was always being mentioned in the old Shooting news, he had the whippet Bow, and two brood greyhounds bitches, don't know if he still has dogs, never hear of him now.
  5. ALWAYS CHECK WHATS IN THE FIELD BEFORE SLIPPING THE DOG EINSTEIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I always found time to walk my lamping ground, checking for branches, farming machinery etc, As lamping, and day work can be a dangerous game, Maybe goes back to my longnetting as I always walked the set I was going to net during the day, picking up twigs that could tangle in my net. It would maybe be different if you didn't have permission, then you just have to take your chance.
  6. Sorry should have mentioned that, I was okay I had my own Flock of sheep.
  7. wasnt there a bloke called carl williams from south wales who used to breed grews years ago. saw one reputedly from his kennels work years ago very handy dog. I had a Whippet X grey bred by carl williams out of his Whippet Bow, does anyone know him, is he still in the dog game?
  8. Roughly the same advice, put on a long leash, I had a rolled up newspaper in the other hand, walk the dog through, the important part is when the Sheep run when seeing you, and the Dog if he tries to lunge or run at them, draw the leash in give him a firm no, and a tap on the snout with the rolled up paper, not a belt but a tap, after a few times he should get the message, mines always did. When he shows no interest, let him of the leash, and walk him through, if he does have a go catch him quick and repeat, although as I said my dogs learned this pretty quick. hope this helps.
  9. Best Rabbiting Dog I ever owned Whippet X Beddy, Would work cover as good as any Terrier, Spot on marking Dog, Would take Rabbits on the run, Also worked the Lamp.
  10. Alf was a true gent and yes he had some cracking dogs, I wonder if he ever regretted selling some picture? He did get a good price, but I heard he regretted it. First got to know him, when he did Lazer treatment on my Whippet X Grey, and yes he was a Gentleman. I heard he got 12k for him. Did you run dogs at Gretna regular? I ran them there from the late ''s up untill a couple of years ago. I heard he was offered 12k but turned it down then was offered 17 and sold it, only what I was told, don't know if its true.
  11. Was at Gretna years ago, my dog was sitting off the front, when we noticed all dogs in the race came from the same town, we knew the owners well, had a word and stopped all dogs bar mine, he won out the park, wee Robley who run it at the time was flaming, after that he never had all dogs from the one place in a race. Happy memories, Flapping tracks were full of skulduggery, and characters.

  16. i USE TO CORRESPOND WITH T McPhee YEARS AGO, AND HE ALWAYS TOLD ME HE LIKED A BIT OF bEDLINGTON IN HIS DOGS.
  17. My area has always been strong on Collie X Greys, you don't need Ex coursing stock, All the dogs I have seen were bred from ex Trackers, and most have worked well. There are also loads of big long legged hill collies up here who work every day, I personally would rather use these than trial Dogs.
  18. Best Hare catcher pre ban I ever saw, and ive seen a few, slept on the couch in front of the fire, and I did not own her.
  19. I always worked Beddy crosses, never had a problem with them, like everybody I was looking for more speed, I had a Whippet X grey which if worked well I would use as a stud, he was a cracking looking dog, with a good turn of speed, but had bad feet, spent most of his time kennelled up with knocked up toes, whilst my beddy crosses were out hunting, I had over 1000 acres of prime hunting ground at the time, so I would only run him on good ground, but it made no difference, and I never used him as a Stud, Don't really wish to knock the Breed, maybe I was just unlucky. Worked my beddy crosses
  20. First time I have ever seen a human Lampshade. :D
  21. Anyone any photos of Border X Whippet X Whippet.or has anyone worked this cross?
  22. I bred and worked Beddy Crosses for years, none were lined bred, Just make sure its a working Beddy on to a good whippet or grey, Try the Working Bedlington Forum, good bunch of Lads on there, who can point you in the right direction.
  23. Yeah, I see yer point, dogooders who think dogs should have a seat at the family table, sleep on yer pillow while you cramp up at the foot of the bed and otherwise rule the roost can be a pain. But these people are just dog ignorant types. It hasn't clicked that a dog is a carnovorous hunting machine (no matter what breed it is). These are the people who think that by calling a dog ''Shnookums'' will make it a 9 month old human baby. These are the same people who end up returning their dogs to the rescue home when it bites them or their kids and then they blame the previous owner. I see yer p
