Many of the best lines of Bull blood and Coursing dogs, came about, via men with time on their hands and a desire to create something special...regardless of their own financial status or upmarket neighborhood... Nice shiny kennels and a brand new pick up, don't necessarily make good dogs,..its continuous work in the field that molds an animal into a useful critter...?

Thank God you hadn't set Kania traps, Bosun... Never rated the killing power of a Fenn trap,..seen far too many live critters, (ferrets, Mink, stoats, etc) fighting to get free of its clinging embrace... I remember sitting with George Newcombe, as one of his Bedlington hybrids came trotting around the corner, wearing a Fenn trap, on its muzzle? "Come here ya silly thing", said George, as he removed the rusty old trap... The terrier went straight back to continue searching for her rat, totally unharmed and none the worse for the experience...?

? You're not wrong there...mind you, me and Lucy soon cheered up when the Farmer gave us the lamping rights?... Whereas, that poor old fox never really got over the experience.?

I've never bothered much with foxes or those other things...? Facts are, nowadays we have purpose bred canines that genuinely relish that old game,..but back in the day, you often had to hunt a vulpine out of cover for a Keeper or Farmer with what you had, and if you wanted to stay on the land,... ye had better not miss the fecker...?

C'mon now, bonny lad, ye know what the old terrierman wrote,.."Work them hard and treat them like heroes"...? Mind you, I probably do spoil em a wee bit...?

Fair play to you fellah... I've pals locally,...who are constantly striving to improve their stock,..and they will travel all over Europe and invest large sums of money in order to make such improvements. Then,..when the time comes,..they go out and test their animals,...? The end results from such a serious breeding programme are really quite phenomenal,...and I revel in the privilege of handling such incredible creations. They really are, quite something... However, as much as I would love to own one,..we all agree that such purpose-bred dogs would be wasted on an aged ra

Its a mystery, why the miscellany of rough and broken coated lurchers, (many of Deerhound origins),...have disappeared off the scene.? Perhaps we now have far more versatile hunting dogs, mostly created for a purpose, ie; the Saluki and Bull blooded lurchers. Maybe our beautiful Deerhound hybrids belong to another era, sadly long gone, when lads used to go out and simply enjoy seeing their running dogs in action, unburdened with the stress of fretting and worrying, as to whether their jukels did this, or did that,....? back then it was great craic,...the lurcher world was innocent a

? I've been lucky,...I've had several dream jobs,...unbelievably diverse, but all, equally exciting, in their own different ways...? I'm an old pensioner now and occasionally, (very occasionally)...I do get the hunger pangs and yearn for days long gone,..but mercifully, this feeling soon passes... We all have regrets, but upon reflection,...I've made it into my dotage,...I've survived,...its time to chill out now...?

During the late 1980s, we put the first cross Deerhound/Greyhounds back to sheepdog blooded lurchers,..they were smashing dogs,..far more versatile than the F1...

The Deerhound influence can produce some capable working dogs.

It is a shame, Ian. Robin was a great friend to me and we spent many years traveling throughout the UK together. He was extremely supportive of all my crazy money-making schemes, some of which we won, some we lost... ? I was with him on the day he died, I made certain promises to him,..and I have honored them...? Doubt I will ever get such an honest and genuine pal as him again...

? Seems to be getting fecking complicated,...this ole lurcher business...?

I've never got more than a quid for a coney...sold fecking thousands,...and thousands, and... Problem is,..the British public just doesn't go for them, on masse,..ye can curry em, sweet and sour em,..do what ya fecking like, but the rabbit days are long gone. It is a crying shame, cos rabbit meat is fat-free and good honest tucker ... Mind you, I ain't-eaten a gravy rat in 30 years,.. I just couldn't stomach one...?

GOOD COLLIE X GREY'S THIN ON THE GROUND IT SEEMS.
Phil Lloyd replied to japs eye's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
No probs, just having the craic,...at least you still have your memories, I lost several thousand of mine last year,...probably too late in life now to get any more... But,..I'm trying my best...? -

Colliejohn,..did your cameraman learn his blurry photo skills from the same teacher as me?? -
Walked out with a few,.and as you say, cracking roustabout lurcher types...ideal moucher's dog, easy to school and great fun to be around.?

? An interesting and thought-provoking thread... I only hunt a few rabbits (very fecking few)? ...but talking to men that drop a deer or two,..they tell me that, the technique is gained through experience...?

? I would think that the original poster's head is spinning... So much in-depth information and data, ...presented to us, in a most erudite manner. It must be comforting to look upon a canine pal in such an analytical and logical way... Personally, I still believe that certain dogs do have a genuine affection and close bond with their owners... Likewise, I genuinely enjoy, being around my own hunting partner,..we have great fun and life is a gas. Possibly, I am thinking along anthropomorphic lines, and maybe a contemporary student of training methods or a canine behav

I think any dogman worth his salt, would be keen to learn from men who have an expertise that they lack,.it would be wastefully foolish not to benefit, from the wisdom of others. However, as a fellow of limited intellect and scant formal schooling,... I do think that it is woefully foolish, to compare the training, schooling, and phycology of the specialist attack dogs and highly trained protection dogs, to the mindset of a Gazehound based hybrid... I suppose prey drive is similar, no matter what the intended quarry, but I have found that my soft-hearted but consistent approach to s
