I can’t agree with that a lot mate .
ive seen and owned dozens of saluki blooded dogs that have marmalised hares all over Annan and Dumfries . This talk of four and five mins , not up there mate.
as for using wee Bob , wee Bob was a first cross saluki greyhound to injun joe . why use him if 90 % of dogs cant catch up there ??
the only way most hares get away there is if they can go unsighted on a hill ,fields left / south of the a75 usuallly bank downwards, it’s literally like shooting fish in a barrel with a quick type . My Sal grey used to break them up in 30 - 40 secs if there were kicked outta that ground pal .
Not trying to be a prick but to compare the fens with Dumfriesshire is a bit rich pal
hope ya enjoyed ya walk
were you lamping or running in the summer?? NOW is the time to come and show your dog, we would accommodate you, if you would want to put a small wager working mans type, no problem, I clearly stated I have never run the slope,
Now is the time time, December or January,

was good site the hills fens border lad dont see much of geoff on here now
you get a good sal cross mate i dont think nothing comes close
4/5 mins is a good run
id say a lot will be killed under 3 mins
and bambi as soon as they get there
plenty knock bunnys over
i think a strong hare winter isnt going over unless its run down mate
well I can only give you my experience, the ground I ran my dog or dogs on was were the Scottish coursing of scotland ran
here in Annan, and these Hares were reported to be the best in the country, the blood was mixed from Altcar (Waterloo cup was held, and, Huntingdon, a crate of Hares went down to those places and another crate came back up from those places, to keep the blood strong, The trainers of the greyhound all said these are the hares, and the travelling lads who ran there dogs there will tell you the same story.
up Here you need a dog to be up at the Hare and apply pressure right from the start, and one that can use his gears and when you have that type its poetry in motion, oh able to jump bad fences as well, A friend of mine has bred from some good dogs, with success, wee Bob ( from Longtown) Pepsi= I have a dog now he is 3 Pepsi is grand sire, and Franny, again bred good pups with success, and Lucas, the bitch bred from Lucas was first class, some good dogs there

well lads there is an old saying you breed a dog for the land you are going to run your dogs on,
Back in the day late 50s 60s, we bred colliexgrey x Deerhound xgrey, those two breeds were bred from working stock IE, the collie was from aworking hill collie and the grey was a coursing grey, the Deerhound was from a working Scottish Deerhound, that blood is no longer available, today, I must state that that those breeds, were hard bred dogs and were more than capable of putting meat on the table, in DAYLIGHT, and they were never at the vets, or bone man,
Today the Saluki highbred is yes a running dog = BUT 90% need to run there quarry for about 4to 5 minutes before they make a score other words they are running there quarry into the ground there has been a few good ones up here but very few, I was always a daylight man, and my opinion a good dog will perform on most ground, I have never run on the Slope, like your dogs have never run the grass parks were the sheep have grazed, The hare can run and so can the good dog, I have only had Saluki blood in my dogs for the past few years, I have had more disappointments, than I care to mention
one good one was bred from Lucas, I believe she was the best bitch that was bred down from Lucas, her dam was the old Scottish Hare coursing blood, the sires gene an her gene just matched, she took out 4 In one field up here in December,
down in Yorkshire she ran two and put two to bed, I put it on (The hills and Fens) which is no longer running, That was in the middle of January, there was one guy on there slating the dog Called Lucas, and I offered him to come up and have a couple of runs, he declined, now to kill all the myths about Scottish Hares the brown ones I am talking about Now is the time to start running them IF IT WAS ALLOWED, what I have seen of the modern Saluki high breed yes there has been great ones the best But they are very few and far between, these are facts not fiction, am to old to walk the fields now I 76cgoing an a couple but struggle with some fences , 76 going 77 and i still walk my dog twice a day I am just going out for a walk with him now,

I bought one back in the mid 60s, for a neighbour of mine, I paid the princely sum of two shillings and sixpence = today @
12 and half new pence it was a fawn with a little white blaze down his front of his chest, she knitted him a coat, he was only about 8 weeks old when I bought him, the woman had him for a bout 10 to 12 years, and needless to say he never had the pleasure of chasing a rabbit, The woman thought the world of the little fella,

I had a lovely walk up along the river bank this morning, around 6.30 am this morning, and I was thinking about my first post I typed on Mother &son, I apologised, to the fellow who originally posted, for going off topic, it was my first post on here for at least two and half years, and there was a sarcastic remark made by a guy who goes by the name of BIG RON, I would bet he is a member who has a couple of subscriptions, and I have my suspicions who it came from, One bitch dog came to mind, Her name was Tinker a red fawn only 23" this was back in the day late 60s early 70s greyhound x collie whippet, I bought her of an old travelling man she was about 18 month old some thing around there yes she could do her job all daytime and a great watch dog as well, Another dog 3/4 grey 1/4 Scottish deerhound, he had pace to burn, lift his quarry without breaking his stride, Rabbit and Hare, this is when it was all legal about the same time as Tinker, I won the Christmas, stakes with him lads from Carlisle and a couple of travelling lads, we ran on the Scottish coursing grounds the man who I was in the final with is still around Carlisle his name is Tony H--------, he was a fighting man as well, so if there is lads from Carlisle they will know of him, the 3rd dog well he was Turbo Sam, 26" Black dog, do the full card the only dog I saw and witnessed, he took 7 out on that famous ground, were the Scottish national was held all legal around, 1975 and those three dogs should never have left my home, proper dogs, today I have a young dog he will be 3 in September,he is Salukiwhippet xgreyhound, I bred him from my bitch Saluki whippet greyhound, Pepsi is his grandsire, and the greyhound in his dams side was Westmeadehawk Irish Derby winner, those three previous dogs were never at the Vets or bone man
the Saluki, x has been to the bone setter out in West Cumbria, a Knowledgeable man , now I do not have the energy for the game, I can walk a couple o fields and that is were I am I had a bad do of Cancer from 2009 started from my left Kidney they removed that one then I went 5years then Lung and lymph gland, and to this day I am on top of that, I walked with my dogs and I stopped ridding horses, but the dogs kept me going, but my belief, in the good Lord he helped me through, I refused chemo, about 4years back and I have aqua puncture a proper Chinese, lady for the past 5 years, (((( please I am not looking for sympathy or sorrow))) you play the hand you are dealt with, and it never gets me down, I have and still am enjoying life, Life is what you make it, enjoy it and smile and thank the Lord you are able to do it, Thank you all

Hello I have not posted, for maybe two or a bit more years, I was reading this post, and a member suggests to put the dog pup if he is good one back into his mother, I am not a fan of line breeding, for start the mother of the pup has nothing to do with me, I am only replying to the post, In the wolf world it may work well, But I reserve my opinion, on that type of breeding, for lurchers, I look back over the last 30 or 40 years of dogs that was bred for the banned sport, they are a huge amount of failures, all bred from so called top dogs, I am telling you the truth some can not line a bitch, Fact, again this were the AI comes in, I remember well, when dogs used to run the streets, the old mut had half a chance, and he was connected, sorry for going off the post,

WE were working down in Burnley, around 1972/3 we used to use a pub called the Stanley arms, in Burnley wood, (( that's a district of Burnley, craic was first class back in the day about 8 pints for one £ yes truth, well this lad approached me and asked me if I would take two dogs of him as he was going on a holiday at the Queens expense, I said how good is your grey hound he said he is able to do 3out of 3 and carry each hare back to your hand, the other was a wee rough haired jack russel terrier, type, a very nice sort as well, The greyhound was a big Red type good feet on him, I took both of the dogs, the big dog he was called Red. could do his job and do it well, his speed and prey drive was first class, I had him for just over a year, we were out one morning, he was coursing a Hare, done his job and was carrying the Hare back to me as usual he come to this five bar wooden gate he tried to jump the gate with the hare in his mouth, one his back legs missed the top rail and he broke his back leg I could see every thing I ran as fast as I could to get to him, I lifted him off the gate, put him around my shoulders, and carried him to the road, just then a milk float was coming along I knew the driver, he gave me a lift to the local vets, and I had him put to sleep the vet I knew well, he used to geld my horses and I used to buy my wormers from him, That greyhound was a genuine good hearted dog great with children and he would let you know if any stranger was sniffing around that was about 45years back, The memory of him is still very strong, Without the grey hound you have NO LURCHERS, The amount of Saluki x s that was bought down in England and brought up here to Scotland and was found wanting, yes and paid top money for as pups and that is one reason why the Lurcher world is full of Sh---T due to the fact the lad paid about £500 for the pup reared him and then tried them out about the 14 months suffered about another 3or four months with it and they decide to take a pup of the useless article and then sell the pups to try recoup there money more shite to the dog pounds FACT,

The collie /greyhound, my Opinion, The best all-round pot fillers, put meat on the table, I was lucky as a 14yearold boy to get a pup from two top working dogs, The bitch was a working proper Hill working collie, and a champion coursing greyhound, that won the coveted Waterloo cup, the best competition, of coursing greyhounds, The Champion of champions, held at Altcar, Back in those days, there was NO passengers kept in any yard they all had to be able to do there job, the cull was heavy, only the strong would survive, take a moment and look at the Collie Stud, on page 7 there is a photo of Cotton King, a superb animal He was the sire of my first Lurcher pup, Cotton King was bred here, in a small town called Annan in Scotland, By Mr, Hardie Wright, and he was the trainer as well, He won the Waterloo cup two times, My pup was never inoculated and was never at the vets, Fast forward to days dogs, they are never away from the Bone setter, now that could be they were running on very hard ground or running on mud going in about 3to 4inches of soot, what ever, when I run my dogs I try to run them on decent ground were is possible, Moorland is not the best of ground for a fast dog, that is why they bred the Scottish deerhound, strong boned rough coated, to protect from the biting winds, Alas that type of working hound is no longer available, again I had a two or three 3/4 grey/1/4 deerhound which were decent dogs, but I preferred a good collie x with pace and heart to take his quarry, any how that is my Opinion, every one to his choice, But go on to Jigsaw,, Collie stud, and you will see a proper greyhound dog, on page 7,

Go for it Jiggy, the ole collie /grey stays deep within me, good clever dogs, my first was way back in 1958 a young 14 year old Boy, my uncles working Hill collie bitch, x Cotton king ( waterloo cup winner, and back in those days Hill collies could work, pace stamina, and Brains, No Quad bikes, every body had to work back in those days or simple you did not EAT, The collie bitch was tyed up in the wee cow byre, Cotton king his kennels was only about 200yards away down at the bottom of the field, He escaped from his pen, and the byre door was a little bit open enough for the dog to get in, were the bitch was, a couple months later an un wanted litter of pups was born, I begged my Grannie to let me keep this black dog pup with a white blaze, down his chest, the mating was just a pure accident, (( truth)) that is when I fell in love with my Lurchers, we are talking of 60 years Ago, I bred my wee black bitch this summer, she is Saluki/whippet/greyhound, just under 23" mated to a very good Scottish dog he was 9 years old my disappointment she only had one pup a Black dog pup, is this a coincidence, I know this will be my last Lurcher pup to rear and enter, (((( as they say spirit is strong but the flesh is weak,

Well Lads after rearing your pride and joy, for the best part of 2 to 3 years, Then in a rush of madness, you slip your pride and joy, on to one of those big fellas, your dog is going to have a night mare of a run, As said the Rough terrain, ruts of heather with those dangerous rocks jutting out, then in seconds, he is up to his shoulders in the peat bogs, and there is plenty of those were those fellas rome, and then he lowers his mighty head, with at least 14 pointed daggers just waiting to lift your pride and joy, In reality, leave well alone, Again some one some were has probably, achieved Taking out the Monarch of the Glen, ((((( I am pleased to say it is not my cup of tea,
