Yep, sadly a few ruined it for many and when it comes to killing a badger it looks like the most humane way was banned too.
-
Sounds like my type of terrier. Had to work for the line before going to ground and finding. Promising indeed.
-
But I thought for vaccination they used cage traps. How do they expect to snare a badger with a wire and release it unharmed after a night in a wire. If they are and terrierwork is an illegal method then the mind boggles ?
-
Yes, and then their new owners put 30 years of breeding behind them and after giving you Brits £300 for them the peddlers sell them to the Americans for $3000. Everyones happy.

Spoken like a true Dub. And is coddle on the menu tomorrow Peter ?

I'd have to see it with my own two eyes to see snares lifted over the weekend. We've often had farmers ask us to shoot badgers when out rough shooting because they'd been in them over the weekend. The worst was a snare set on a Friday and it being a bank holiday weekend the badger was still lying there on the Monday. It had dug a hole the length of the wire and was lying there waiting to be shot. I refused to shoot it and the Department man came Tuesday morning and shot it. IMO it's hard to believe that that way is legal but the way my father done it with terriers when legal is now illega

That's the thing, 19 lbs IS a big fox. When lads start talking about fox's the size of collie's then a 19 pounder sounds like a cub. Look at Carp anglers ? Some of them consider a twenty something that gets in the way when you're trying to hook a forty. Appreciate and be grateful for every fox you hunt whether he's an average 14 lbs or a whopping 20 lbs and whether you account for him or not. I still don't believe there's a 40 pound fox out there.

Great picture. I had a terrier once that would jump on to my shoulder from the ground. It was a sure sign there was a fox around, .

Most of us try to forget them but now someones suggested we remember them

I had a terrier once with a funny shaped head, but it was more like a hammer than a pickaxe.

Very very nice but practical looking knife.

Getting the smell of fox of your hands

Nice try Chevinfox, if I come on here tomorrow evening and say I've just pissed on my hands would your answer be " ". Anyways when I was married it was always good to come home smelling of fox, it was when I came home with my fingers smelling of fish that I used to get in trouble, . -
Rob, going back to the 70s and 80s when there were a good few terrier clubs in Ireland it was stated in the rules that anyone found digging vixens and cubs would be dis-missed from the club and if you go even further back to when the Irish K.C. ran trials it was a big NO NO to kill badgers. This was not only because killing them was not necessary but also because it made for a better standard of terrier. Thankfully there's plenty of terriermen here in Ireland who still believe in only culling when necessary.

No he's not. Anyone who has done even a bit of shooting, particularly at night, will have seen foxes wounded. Let's call a spade a spade here. It happens.

Last year on the General Forum someone asked for a cure for mouth ulcers. I suggested packing his mouth with black pepper. He actually did it, came back on and said it was a dreadful experience. Something tells me Chevinfox that you're trying to get the same reaction here. I can see it now "the fox smell is gone, but everyone thinks I've pissed myself." . -

Was she down the yard Eddie because you were skinning a fox in the living room, probably while watching Corrie . -
Used to dig with an English Gamekeeper. None of us liked him as he was a loud mouth but he had 1000s of acres to hunt over so we put up with him. He loved to kill anything. It wasn't about vermin control as he probably caused the deaths of more of his pheasants than any amount of foxes. But we always loved to let quarry off. We were on one of our own farms one day and to shut the Keeper up we told him the farmer was an IRA man (he wasn't) so to keep the English accent down. It was working nicely 'till we dug a huge dog fox with the keepers young dog and he wanted it killed for a rag. But

You got that right................look at that black one with glasses in the Labour party that the lads on here are always giving out about. And Hilary Clinton, she's another.

What's it come to when a handy shallow dig makes the papers ????????????

It's in Hong Kong, maybe he has a taste for Chinese ? He looks at the other boar and says "I could murder a chinky".

Get a pint of tomato juice ,put a large measure of white spirits in it, drink it and you wont be able to smell the foxy odour anymore. -
Spoken like a true keeper, but you're right. We do have be seen to work terriers in a humane and professional manner while preforming pest control. But here in Ireland it is very traditional to allow quarry to live for another day and without a shadow of a doubt educated game DOES make for better terriers. To a lot of Irish terriermen the very thoughts of killing game is completely out of the question. On a legal note, I'm not sure about Britain but under our Master of Foxhounds rules a cold marked fox can be bolted by a terrier to be hunted by hounds. But not when put to ground afte

If you keep baying type terriers they'll usually lick the smell of your hands. If you keep hard type terriers let them lick your hands and they'll remove them. Truth be told, soap will remove the smell of a fox of your hands, it's like any other smell. Just wash your hands.
