  1. Actually the Jill I am using now is in her third year and has not killed in once yet. She has however had rabbits in stop ends and the twice this year she has had a rabbit, she has left the rabbit after 15 to 20 minuites. I have some videos of ferreting and to be honest without exeption I would never put a ferret down any of the warrens after they had netted up. When they do bolt a rabbit you have three or four people running over the top of the warren like a herd of demented Elephants, just to get a rabbit that is well pursed. Then after one or two bolts it's out with the locator and
  2. Prey please do tell me how a ferret is going to get "stuck" in a stop end?
  3. Locators are for wimps and people with no field craft. Whoops, and pro rabbiters who do not have the time to wait for the ferrret and one that kills consitently cuts down on the time factor, by having a quick dig, after all that is what they are getting paid for. There my friend is the crux of the matter, pest control persons are paid to get results so they have to get them or go out of buisiness. When all you hobby ferreters (of which I am one) keep banging on about locators and you cannot leave home without one and a spade. Make me think, god for Feck sake learn some fieldcraft, then yo
  4. I use to ferret squrrels all the time. After mixie had wiped out all the rabbits in the 1960s we had nothing left to hunt only squirrels and rats. Although I would only put them in holes in trees that were not above head hight. Most ferreting was done out of old dry stone walls that ran through the oak woods. The noise the squirrels would make as soon as they smelt the ferret was pretty loud, they would chatter and scream at the ferret but they would always bolt rather than fight. It was real good sport bolting them to the terriers. Plus you had the up side that you could eat the younger
  5. make your mind up on the amount of holes mate,
  6. Asking a lot? For gods sake it was a 3 hole warren.
  7. I have never heard so much rubbish in all my life!!!! I have done one 30 odd hole warren on two seperate occations this year working it with a single ferret. First time I had 9 out of it the second time I had 7 with a single jill. and not a single layup on either occasion. Yes there might have been rabbits left after each visit, but again, there might not have been. Too many ferrets in a small area cause layups...........But there again you dont need fieldcraft to use a spade.
  8. Make yourself one of these they hold the net in place no problem. I start all of my nets off on one. then use it threaded through the meshes to kint long nets with.
  9. This is exactly the same as we do it works well, After taking the time & effort to make my nets the one thing I really don't like is loosing any or leaving any behind. Instead of using rubber bands, they perish in no time. Get the inner tube from a bike tyre and cut them into 1cm strips and use those. I have been using them for 30 odd years and have yet to loose a net.
  10. One question comes to mind. Why are these Jills coming into season before the natural cycle dictates they should? In america they keep the ferrets on timed cycles to produce 3 litters a year. How they do it is fooling the ferret into thinking its spring by ajusting the amount of light that the ferret receives every day. Thus bringing on a season in the ferrret when they should be dormant. Could it be that the ferrets that are coming into season early, are being subjected to an artificial light source that is triggering a season in the ferret when they should be dormant? It wou
  11. If you take into account the cost of the raw materials, the time taken to knit the net, that is a realistic price for a handmade net. That said, I would not buy them at that price. Tiercel
  12. There speaks a man who knows what he is talking about. Positioning yourself correctly on a warren and you can shepherd the rabbits to go in almost any direction you want. Position yourself wrongly and they will mostly go back to ground. If you are ferreting hedges or large warrens long nets are a must.
  13. I love Walked up Woodcock shooting. But this year they have been in short supply here. Same as last year, last year though, they did turn up in good numbers in the last week of the season. I did go for a walk yesterday and rose only one. That was my first of the season.
  14. These net traps arestill available for sale. Found one here. http://www.ediloisir.com/fiche-14-60-557-1-0-9999.html Shows a photo of the trap, that might help you.
  15. A few rabbits around Llian and Llanarth.
  16. I use 4z at the moment, it's pretty light and tangles well enough. That said if I could get a 3z net I would use that as a first option. The finer the net without losing strength the better it will catch.
  17. I can see your point and agree with you whole-heartedly. In that situation I would do the same as you and have done so in the past. But to be honest I have had more pleasure now out of going out and getting half a dozen rabbits and hunting for them, than doing places that were crawling with rabbits and coming away with a van full of rabbits. About 20 years ago I was ferreting, lamping and shooting rabbits over most of west Wales I would get on the average of 2 to 3 phone calls a week off farmers asking me could I help thin out their rabbit problem usually off neighbouring farms to the ones
  18. It makes no matter if you use a Hob or a Jill, unless you are rabbiting for a living you are doing it for pleasure / sport. It may be dressed up as pest control but unless you are willing and able to gas the rabbits that you cannot ferret then it will always be sport. One thing puzzles me. Why the obsession with clearing a warren? All the posters that have answered to this thread so far are, as far as I know, sport ferreters. What is the big fascination with numbers? Why does the count mean so much? When I go ferreting I go for sport. Nothing else, I do it purely for my pleasure. Good
  19. Something like a 20/15 spun polyester would be just fine. I do believe The Net Loft (mole catcher) has an offer on spun polyester. I think its £7.50 for 500 grms plus P&P. Nice to knit with and nets that last without rotting.
  20. There speaks a man who knows what he's talking about. Makes me laugh to see so called experenced rabbiters taking live rabbits out of a net to kill them, then drop the rabbit.
  21. I would like to thank you all for your tips, as a total novice they are all welcome and have been taken on board. Hopefully the next set of photos will show a vast inprovement. Many thanks. Tiercel

Mole catcher has just moved house and the phone is not back on yet. He is hoping to be connected shortly. As soon as he is back on line he will catch up with his emails. Tiercel
  23. After reading nearly all of Woodga's, P&G's and Snareman's posts. I was resolved to catch a rabbit by the use of a snare. With all the detailed information that they have provided even a complete beginner like myself should be able to snare the odd rabbit. The weather seemed in my favour to try out my first attempt at snaring. I even took my reading glasses with me so that perhaps I could see the beats better. I only took half a dozen snares with me as I wanted to do a small area with a pretty high density of rabbits. The biggest problem I had, was that I am not the only one who know
  24. Fat is not on the natural diet of a Polecat / ferret. It may come accross it in some animals it kills but it is a very low need for a ferret. What a ferret does need is a balanced diet.. That is balanced for a ferret. High in protien low in fat and limited roughage. The most natural diet you could give a ferret is whole carcus animals. Mice, rats, small birds in their feather. From these small prey animals a ferret will be able to get all the nutriants it needs. The roughage would come from the stomach content and feathers or fur of the animal. The protien would be from the meat of the p
