  1. Some females are not that big. My old redtail used to fly at around 2lb 6oz. She was diffinately female.

Its hard to give any advice over a forum as you can't see the hawk in the flesh. You would be better off seeking out the help from someone more experienced who can actually handle the bird and see if she is overweight or if there is another underlying problem.

It is better to get the hawk to come instantly over a short distance than for her to take her own sweet time at a longer distance. Its also better to call her for a large reward a couple of times than to call her lots of times for small tidbits. For what its worth, i would advise to never try and rob her of food when on the fist or she may take offence. Good luck with her.

    Just my opinion.

  2. Nice hawks mate.

How difficult is it to import birds these days with bird flu and the like. Its just i saw recently there were a few african hawkeagles imported, as well as gabar goshawks, shikras etc for sale on birdtrader. Just curious

    Cheers

  3. They might be small, but apparantly they are gutsy little birds and you can have great fun with them. The Americans hunt sparrows, starlings and such with them.

  4. Hi Jasper i also think it funny that most people go for the size of the hawks rather than their ability. My 3/4 german male will take anything from sparrows upwards. He's also taken a couple of rabbits now.

  5. How long is a piece of string?

It all depends on how desperate the seller is to get rid.

But remember cheapest is not always the best. A hawk is a long term investment, they can live for 20 plus years so you would be better getting a well bred and well reared hawk, which are generally not much dearer.

Average price - male 250, female 350 pounds

  6. Flew a small female red for a few years. A very well mannered bird. Main quarry was squirrell and rabbit, but she occasionally had duck, pheasant and moorhen.

She would wait on in the right conditions.

They are good birds if handled right and they take a bit to get them fit.
