Buck was a courtesy invite by Shovel leaner ,last minute and as I was in Bristol ,pigeon shooting in the morning I used his rifle ,Same as mine anyway .Arrived at Js place a bit early around 6 pm .We drove around several places looking to see if the fallow were out yet but nothing showed only roe and muntjac .Almost last light we saw a single fallow buck skirting round a small clump of trees and in no hurry .J hatched a plan to gently push him on around the trees while I waited on sticks at roughly 130 m I’d say from where we first spotted him .Sure enough plan worked to a treat and the buck emerged casually my side the trees and immediately clocked me . Too late ,I neck shot him and down he went ,dead on the spot .Many thanks to J and respect to Riohog for a decent knife .

  2. Alright Nate have you got them all in together?? With any natives I've never bothered with pans they make their own nests. Get plenty of broom put up for them to nest in n plenty of hair. I used to always go up horse fuel grab clumps if it off barbed wire fence. N my bullys used to prefer long stands off grass roots.

I’m not gonna say you’ll be good, nor don’t do it, but why not skip the steel and shoot bismuth? Bismuth performs better, is not terribly expensive, can be found with fibre wads, and the new upland loads are slower and lower pressure. The slower low pressure loads should be fine for that gun and are sufficient to kill fowl (remember, the high speed fowl loads came about as a result of steel being lighter than lead). The slower loads will be easier on the shoulder than high speed steel, too.  You should be able to kill ducks with #5 shot out to 40 yards.

Anyway, good luck and have fun

Hi ya mate do you know any where here that sells bismuth upland loads? I'm hoping to acquire some in 3" otherwise if not gonna have to look I to homeloading.

  4. Hi all really interested in loading up some 3" cases with bismuth for wildfowling but wasn't sure what would be a safe load. My gun was originally proofed for 11/2 oz but recently reproofed for 3 and 1/2 tons per square inch. What would be the heaviest load that would be safe.

Sat a double high seat yesterday evening  with my son and waited til it got cooler , watching a doe and kid in front of us out feeding . Tried a few calls and the doe came running as expected but no buck .Eventually a buck came in a field to our right chasing a doe . Few peeps had him stopped and he walked to the low fence between us but instead of hopping over he carried on up the fence line and out of view behind a large bramble patch . Carried on calling and sure enough he was heard to the bottom right of the seat , thrashing the brambles out of sight . Another quiet peep and he’s right under the seat . He got a bit nervous and half ran , half stumbled through a gate that leads to a narrow walk way through more bramble and hawthorn . George edged the rifle around to face and a gentle peep had him spin broadside for a shot to which he piled deep into the trash and went silent . Very good shot under pressure from George and a porous dad  once again .

This dry weather has altered behaviour to the extreme mate .Places that were a dead cert now have very few or no deer on them .Seeing more with the thermal in unusual places than I'd expect .Went to a place yesterday evening that is usually good for a buck or two but never saw any .Spotted two does on another farm but no buck .Hopefully the rut will be better .I'm down Matt's Saturday so have to see.

sounds like how it was when I 1st came down that time when it seemed like all the deer had migrated lol you started seeing any rutting activity at all? fingers crossed ya can grass a few with Matt.
