best food for pups raw or dry?
Gaz_1989 replied to tony1978's topic in Working Dog Health & Training Talk
Okay thanks for clearing that up. My terrier would do well off a chicken wing a day but I think I would struggle to keep weight on the lurcher without one high carb meal a day but I guess every dog is different. Maybe when he has stopped growing I could cut the Carbs back and feed more raw. Thanks again, Gaz. -

Glad you are noticing a difference. I would say it took about 2 weeks before I started seeing a difference in Rocky. At first we would have the odd good day then 10 consecutive bad days. Now we probably have the odd incident, maybe one a fortnight where I feel like belting him, but we are slowly getting there. 90% of the time he is a pleasure. Last night for example he jumped out of the car after our walk and f****d off up the street 8 houses up. No explanation apart from him being a stubborn twat. After 10 mins of calling him he came, I felt like giving him a bollocking obviously but -

Scalesntails - Out of interest why do you avoid carbs? The bulk of my dogs diet is breast of lamb as I feel this is a good balance of fat, meat and bone. But I like to feed the cooked meal at least once a week. It usually consists of horse meat, cabbage, broccoli, carrots, spinach, garlic and brown rice. Other meals include fatty beef offcuts from butchers, tripe, offal, chicken wings and eggs. Gaz -

Get them on raw fella. If you are worried about nutritional requirements and you are new to raw feeding then feed them a couple of dry meals a week. Just a decent complete like sneyds o redmills is fine. Don't be afraid to cook meat (no bone) and make your own complete meal. As we speak I've got a big pan on the stove cooking half a bag of brown rice, a big bag of mixed frozen veg, couple of cloves of garlic and 6lb of meat. Total cost about £5.00 and will produce a good few meals for the dogs. I can't tell people how much better the dogs look fed properly. However as said -
Wouldn't a whip x collie/whip make for a faster all rounder? Or sal/whip/grey x collie/whip which is what I have my sights on for the future :-)

collie/saluki testing time

I will give you my personal experience here. I am certainly not a dog trainer and I am currently in the process of training my first lurcher. He is a 9 month old saluki/whippet/greyhound. From day 1 (6 weeks old) I started training, sit, down, recall etc and was getting nowhere. He would try to be a pup and play with me and I would shout at him and hit him for it. By 6 months old he was a nightmare. Zero obedience, zero recall. We could be up the local country park where there are loads of other dogs and he would race off as soon he saw them and I would literally have to round him -
I'd go for whippet greyhound with a dash of saluki and collie :-)

I was thinking about this myself. My dogs (3 year old JRT and 8 month lurcher) are both now on 1 meal after recently dropping from 2 meals. But i was wondering if 2 smaller meals would be better? Especially for a working lurcher? I know that sports men and women eat 5-6 small meals a day to aid metabolism and muscle recovery etc, would dogs not benefit from 2/3 smaller meals as opposed to just one big meaal? Just curious, Gaz

That natures menu is good stuff. I had my pup on it for a few months to build him up. Good luck. Gaz

Thanks for advice. I keep trying and keep thinking he will come good as he matures. He is 7 months now. Usually my best trick when he is being a twat is to run off in opposite direction, shout him then grab him as he goes to run past me and then praise him alot. Recall and Retrieve are both the same.

I too would like to know this. Seems they go deaf sometimes and just f**k off. Mine doesn't run off. Just stay 10 foot away or so and won't come in close enough. He will follow me everywhere but keep his distance. Gaz

3/4 dog over a straight half bitch what will you get ?
Gaz_1989 replied to baz69's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Yeh your right they are just lurchers mate. But a lurcher could be a 7/8 whippet 1/8 beddy and it could be a 7/8 deerhound 1/8 greyhound. So quite a variety. Having an idea of how much of what blood went into the pups gives a slightly better idea of the dog in question surely? My dog is sal/whip/grey. For all you know he could be 90% saluki or 10% saluki. Quite a difference? Just my take on it. Gaz -
Nice bitch tommy. Bet she is a useful all rounder? Gaz

Forgot to add, when they get the egg and bread meal I usually chuck either a tin of tuna in sunflower oil with it or a good glug of olive oil. Keeps the cost looking lovely.

Have a guess at quantity and watch your dog. If he starts putting weight on then reduce food and vice versa. I am feeding once a day now, twice if they have had a big walk or been lamping etc etc. Think variety and you won't go wrong. I get minced lamb breast and beef heart from a bloke I know for 50p per lb. Real good stuff. Lurcher gets 1.5lb and terrier 0.5lb. Feed this twice a week. I get racks of lamb for 15p each, they get one each a couple of times a week. I get 800g minced green tripe for 75p, one of these between them, once or twice a week. I get bags of butche

My pup has been eating racks of lamb since 6 weeks old and is fine. My terrier bitch who I got a few months back had never seen Raw food but now she loves it. Dogs look awesome on it. My vets provide a leaflet on diet and recommend "home made diets" consisting of cooked meat, veg and pasta. Whilst this is better than alot of the commercial food I sill prefer raw. The leaflet continues to say that dogs can get salmonella from raw chicken in the same way humans can. And that Raw bones can puncture the intestines. Bull!!!

No problem. Some folk say fractions and percentages mean f**k all in the dog world. But it's still nice to know what's in there I think. Gaz -

Wexford, will you do me a favour, put a pic of your bitch and let me know what sire you use and then drop me a PM. If it's saluki blooded sire then I'm really interested in this breeding, saluki/collie maybe with a dash of bull. Would like to see how pups turn out. Gaz

Agree with the others, if it pleases you then what more can you want from the dog? I class my pup as a gooden. He is only 7 months but I know he will be with me until the end, wether it's next week he runs into a tree and breaks his kneck or at the age of 15 by the fire. He has taught me so much as a first lurcher already, he is good with stock, walks off the lead anywhere, he will tear off if he sees another dog but always comes back, he is already showing alot of interest daytime, marking up and chasing anything that moves, likewise he has been out watching the lamp and showing alot

You can't go wrong putting some grafting saluki blood in there in my opinion. Gaz

We are all in the same sport. In every sport/hobby/activity there are bell ends who spoil it for the others. You haven't got a category for them? And why do bull cross get put with tracksuit? I went for a jog with my lurcher this morning. Had trackies and trainers on, he had his "strong stuff" collar on. So I guess I'm the lowest of the low in the hierarchy? Can whippet owners not also be poachers? Fox men? Rabbit men? Hare coursers? I think your thread is a load of shite mate to be Frank, and I think it is your sole aim to cause a 15 page argument? Lol. All the best.
