  1. What exactly do you want the dog to do?

You say move on from ferreting but to what? Do you want the dog to flush the rabbits from burrows ?? Are you going to be shooting?

Loads of people decide what dog they want then can't understand why it doesn't fit their needs. Decide what job you are going to do, then pick one from the group that does that job best?

Your still going to need a cage or someting in your van or at work. A free running puppy for hour after hour is no good for your company & no good for the dog.

  2. I know some ppl keep dogs in kennals so a flat cant be that bad can it?

    Any comments would be welcome

My kennelled dogs can sh1t & p1ss in the kennel without fear of getting b0llocked for it. So your flat comparison is just nonsense.

It's good that your at least asking these questions but I'd advise against you getting one at this stage

Sorry to disagree but my dog's are kennelled through the day while I'm at work, but they won't go to the toilet in their kennel/run.I understand not all dogs are as clean as this,I think it's the lab who's rubbed off on the cockers but they hardly go to the toilet in the garden :boogie: (the chickens ruin that  ) .I walk them first thing in the morning and as soon as i get home from work. But I'll agree to whats already been said that a spaniel is a little hyper to leave in the house for long periods

You're kind of missing the point

  4. Seriously, why would you? :icon_eek:

Years of selective breeding to produce as you say "2 good dogs" for you to think "I know,I join them together to make a better dog".

What if you get the worst of both? A pointer with the slower pace & nose of a lab. The retrieving ability of a pointer.

  5. Hi,

For anyone interested in meeting this exciting and fun breed of dog.

It is a chance to meet the breed in a secure environment, discuss the breed with long standing owners/judges/hunters, discuss the suitability of the breed as a potential pet, or work partner or show dog. Spend time getting to know the breed - there will be many dogs there - observe how the Brittany works and it's special relationship with Hawks. Many Hawk owners are also Brittany owners.

Of course, you can also just relax and enjoy spending some time with this fabulous fun breed.

It is to be held on the 31st July 2011 at The Dog Spa in Pontllanfraith, so a great chance to view their excellent facilities too.

Cost is £5 per person or £8 per couple/family - Please book as parking is limited.

Contact me through this forum or by email for more information.

Treasurer - Brittany Club of G.B.

Nice breed of dog Bill. Are you managing to keep the show / working animal in one dog or is a split developing?

They probably have the info but West Lancs Gundogs have a few Brittany men amongst their members. Drop Nick a line & he'll pass it on.

    Hope your day goes well.

  6. The old favourite on the DVD was Tom Brechny which will help you in the right direction.

More current is the new Rory Major series (which I haven't seen).

Books , try the Guy Wallace or Michael Brander one's.

  7. Make yourself a pigeon trap with either a funnel or bobwire door. These are large ones that I make for big buildings but the principle is the same.

You could also get the Bob wires off John B since it's his idea your using !!!

  9. During the early part of 2010, the previous Labour Government issued a public consultation paper relating to possible replacement legislation for the existing Dangerous Dogs Act. Their stated reasons being concerns over the increased ownership of so called “status dogs†and the increase in dog related injuries. One of the main “solutions†being put forward was that legislation should be introduced which would require all dogs to be microchipped and to also carry third party liability insurance.

The National Working Terrier Federation (NWTF) responded to this paper in May 2010 expressing their concerns at these proposals, along with numerous other organisations. Some of which shared the same views and others which did not. To see the full extent of the consultation, the various proposals and the NWTF's response click here.

The Government has yet to formally publish its proposals, but it was widely reported over the Bank Holiday weekend in the press and on television that there are plans afoot to introduce legislation requiring the compulsory microchipping of all dogs. So far there has not been any mention of compulsory insurance, but that’s not to say it will not apply also, otherwise what’s the purpose of identifying each dog?

Vets charge anything from £35 to £65 per dog for this service and would add anything from £175 - £325 to the cost of an average litter. It would be an unnecessary burden on responsible dog owners at a time of national austerity and be completely ignored by the very group the legislation was intended to target.

Once the Government do publish their proposals it is important that those who share these concerns make them fully known and where it will have most effect. The forum owners are just as concerned as I and others are about these proposals and have willingly agreed to my posting on each of the relevant forums details of any updates and actions which may be taken.

    Y.I.S. - Barrie

Vets charge £10 near me & anything else is scaremongering.

All my dogs are chipped & I had a stolen dog returned after 10 months because he was chipped. I recommend chipping to ALL RESPONSIBLE dog owners.

I do not agree with making it compulsory but a balanced approach is needed NOT stories based on rumours

  10. Get a book or 2 - Start with Joe Irving "Training Spaniels". Get some DVDs - Simon Tyers "Hawcroft cocker Training" is highly recommended.

I start with mine when they are bold enough & hunting hard enough to take the discipline of serious training. Can be any age but usually 8-10 months with cockers.

Puppy training starts the day I get him.

That's puppy recall, very easy to do as the pup should always want to be with you.

Puppy retrieves - 1 or 2 a WEEK just across your back garden, kitchen floor, anywhere, just getting them to pick up & come back to you. - Dont do steadiness, just let them run after it to start.

General puppy awareness - Get the pup used to people, travelling in cars, dogs, sheep, cattle, the lot. If you can get him to hunt on gamey ground then do. If he happens to put up anything and chase it don't worry it won't do him any harm at this stage.

    Enjoy them. :bye:
