  1. What exactly do you want the dog to do? You say move on from ferreting but to what? Do you want the dog to flush the rabbits from burrows ?? Are you going to be shooting? Loads of people decide what dog they want then can't understand why it doesn't fit their needs. Decide what job you are going to do, then pick one from the group that does that job best? Your still going to need a cage or someting in your van or at work. A free running puppy for hour after hour is no good for your company & no good for the dog.
  2. My kennelled dogs can sh1t & p1ss in the kennel without fear of getting b0llocked for it. So your flat comparison is just nonsense. It's good that your at least asking these questions but I'd advise against you getting one at this stage Sorry to disagree but my dog's are kennelled through the day while I'm at work, but they won't go to the toilet in their kennel/run.I understand not all dogs are as clean as this,I think it's the lab who's rubbed off on the cockers but they hardly go to the toilet in the garden (the chickens ruin that ) .I walk them first thing in the mor

  4. Seriously, why would you? Years of selective breeding to produce as you say "2 good dogs" for you to think "I know,I join them together to make a better dog". What if you get the worst of both? A pointer with the slower pace & nose of a lab. The retrieving ability of a pointer.
  5. Nice breed of dog Bill. Are you managing to keep the show / working animal in one dog or is a split developing? They probably have the info but West Lancs Gundogs have a few Brittany men amongst their members. Drop Nick a line & he'll pass it on. http://www.westlancsgundogs.com/ Hope your day goes well.
  6. Take all the eggs that are easy to get to out (don't disturb a bird to get them). If they are still warm stick them under a broody hen and see what happens. Use the others in your traps.

  9. The old favourite on the DVD was Tom Brechny which will help you in the right direction. More current is the new Rory Major series (which I haven't seen). Books , try the Guy Wallace or Michael Brander one's.

  12. thats the ones i was on about you can get the bob wires off ebay .. we used to make them out of wire coat hangers in the form of an upside down u shape tacked to swing on each corner with oval staples -- make sense ? You could also get the Bob wires off John B since it's his idea your using !!!
  13. The drop traps seem to be the best but they are a bit permanent. Found the cage ones to be alright. Put then along the rabbit runs (fence line, hedge line etc) and bait them with carrots. Normally leave them set open for a few days until the rabbits are used to them, then set to trap.

  15. Stop him hunting Make his free time, time spent doing retrieves. When he stops doing the retrieves put him back in the kennel.
  16. Old age He was 14 yrs His breeding will live on for many a year to come though
  17. Seen all the dogs / bitches you mentioned in person John and they are great dogs (sadly Mamba is no more). If you want to know anything more about them have a look at Hawcroft Gundogs. Enjoy the pup.....but remember 1 cocker is NEVER enough
  18. Vets charge £10 near me & anything else is scaremongering. All my dogs are chipped & I had a stolen dog returned after 10 months because he was chipped. I recommend chipping to ALL RESPONSIBLE dog owners. I do not agree with making it compulsory but a balanced approach is needed NOT stories based on rumours
  19. Try feeding the dog twice a day instead of once.
  20. Get a book or 2 - Start with Joe Irving "Training Spaniels". Get some DVDs - Simon Tyers "Hawcroft cocker Training" is highly recommended. I start with mine when they are bold enough & hunting hard enough to take the discipline of serious training. Can be any age but usually 8-10 months with cockers. Puppy training starts the day I get him. That's puppy recall, very easy to do as the pup should always want to be with you. Puppy retrieves - 1 or 2 a WEEK just across your back garden, kitchen floor, anywhere, just getting them to pick up & come back to you. - Dont do ste
