  1. Guys, listen closely. These dogs are not some magical cross we made up in some lab. They are just worker bred to worker. Take this bitch right here for example. She is used on coyotes more than any other game but she is not anything like the dogs I keep. She can outrun them, yes. She will trip a coyote and stick her head in a coyotes mouth if need be. She is a gritty little shit at times. There some over here that would call her a staghound and yes she probably is but she has some saluki in her of course somewhere. What I'm sayin is that yall have all the same stuff as we do, you just gotta keep breeding worker to worker which of course I know alot of people already are doin this. There is alot of "romance" in the idea of a F1 cross cause thats what the books say a lurcher is sorta but it just aint so.

Dan, I know what you're saying; this dog had the look of that bitch about him, and he was bred from Deer/Grey/Saluki/Bull, not sure what percentages, but was worker to worker. He belonged to LDR, but I saw him do the job; a big dog, 28" + but he took everything from rabbits up !! Died doing what he was bred for !

  2. Here is a pic of a great staghound. Do you really think we got this type of dog by crossing it to a modern day type deerhound?

No mate, I think you got great dogs like that by breeding the best to the best ! Just as some of us in the UK try the same !! But then again, we haven't the quarry here that you have over there; we just wish we had !!

    Cheers.

I know you know the game but just wanted to illustrate for some that read too much bullshit off this net. We didnt breed them pencil necked shit eatin deerhounds to a greyhound to produce these coyote dogs. They bred coyote dog to coyote dog to do so. Like I said, I know you knew but had to just say it cause i here this garbage way too much.

Dan, I didn't want to get into an "I did this...You did that" match, 'cause you would win !! I've ran dogs all over the world, and hunted stuff most people in the UK haven't. I don't know for sure what dogs are in your "Staghounds", but I'll bet my butt they are Greyhound/Deerhound and some local breeds, (long way back!!). I've only ran dogs down Texas way, with good lads, not sure where youre from in the States, but, BY GOD, I'd LOVE to have a day out with you and your dogs !!!

Miles, it not like you to attack people ! If you are jelouse of where I've been or what I've done with dogs, please let us know what your problem is ??

    Cheers.

Keep yer hair on C.P.........not an attack.............just a small attempt at humour :D Though i CAN see how being compared to Whine would really upset someone :laugh::laugh:

Keep my hair on !! LOL !! There will have been a few having a guffaw at that !!

    No problem, mate

    Cheers.

  3. At the moment I have a bitch that is made up from Bedlington,Whippet,Deerhound & Greyhound. I also have a 1st X Deerhound/Greyhound pup. In the past I've had pure Saluki and Saluki hybrids, also had Whippets and Collie X's, plus quite a few "Bitza's" so I think I can safely say I'm not "breed blind" !! For Whin to slate Whippets, Saluki's and Deerhounds is rediculess, as these breeds along with Greyhounds are probably the basis of most Lurchers !

Duckwing, believe me; there is still lads going north of the border and getting decent bags and most of the good dogs have more than a little Deerhound in them !

    Cheers.

  4. Whin, there are lads from down here who have been cleaning up in your own backyard for years with genuine 1st cross deer/greys !!! If you get out as much as you say you do, I'm supprised you haven't bumped into them !!! Or maybe they just heard you coming and kept out of your way ????

    Cheers,

You know whats in them just like I do. Sure there is greyhound and deerhound and bulldog and who knows what else. I'd say greyhound and deerhound is the majority but it damn sure aint these modern day deerhounds is all I'm sayin. Take care and I think we both know you have done far more in your life than I have.

Dan, I've been places, hunted stuff, but you have put far better posts up on this site than me !! You've made this site readable at times, and thats what guys want to see !! Next time I'm in the 'States; I'll give you a call, if you can put up with an old man !! LOL !!

She has got a huge back end for a pup, hasn't she !!?? LDR was on the phone today asking when I'm starting her; but theres pleanty time for that !! 11. chart.just think that the strong legs and feet these dogs have are more likely to hold up to a decent day nites work.think u saw my dog neilston show last year and prob my bitch at the scotch game fair

Did I judge your dog and bitch litter mates at Neilston ? Did one of them die doing what it was bred for ? If so, they were cracking dogs. Maybe I'm mistaken, (old age !! LOL !!), I'll be at Neilston this year, and if I'm not roped into judging, I'll probably show the pup. Hope to see you there. Your'e right, Doxhope bred their dogs for conformation for the field, not the ring ! Thats what attracted me to this pup. But Billy dosen't own the stud dog, he bred it, but a guy in Sunderland owns it. 'Becky is the grandmother of my pup, and I understand she was a class working Deerhound. Anyhow, hope to meet you and have a craic about the dogs.

    Cheers.

  12. Perhaps people don't realise that places like Aintree, in Liverpool, and Gosforth Park, in Newcastle, were great coursing grounds until the mechanical hare took over and these great coursing grounds became HORSE racing parks, and the coursing dogs that attracted 10's of thousands of supporters were reduced to chasing a mechanical hare round in circles ?

    Cheers.

  13. I've never ran a Lurcher in simulated coursing, (I once ran a KC Whippet in a display, slipped by a Waterloo Cup slipper), but I once enquired about running a little Lurcher bitch I had. The organiser said she would have to wear a muzzle; I said the dogs didn't wear muzzles in the Waterloo Cup or the Forley, and declined to enter ! Anyway; from watching it, it appears that a dog who runs "smart" will not win, if a dog follows the lure thru' the "gates", it will win ! Bit of a waste of time in my oppinion, neither the fastest or smartest dog wins !!

    Cheers.

  14. I may have been a bit flippant with my reply.... but up here is sheep country and there's any amount of horses. A farmer will not hesitate to shoot a stock worrying dog, and none of us want a dead dog!! Go to the county fairs and shows, let the dog see sheep and even if she doesn't show interest, make her aware that stock is an absolute no - no !! Take her for walks thr'u National Trust land, on a lead !!, and let her see stock, but be hard on her, if she even looks at them, punish her !! I don't believe that once a dog has worried sheep or horses, it can ever be completely trusted, but best of luck !!

  15. Forty odd years ago, a mate of mine wanted to come out with me to give his track dog a "freshener" on hare, first run it hit a fence post and broke it's neck !! Last year a trainer I know, took two track dogs for a walk on a golf course; normaly there isn't even rabbits on this course, but Sods Law, they took off after a deer; one broke it's neck, the other broke a hock !! I stress that these dogs were track dogs, they hadn't been brought up to hunt. Were they unlucky, or just the norm for a track Greyhound ? Who knows ??

    Cheers.

  16. I've seen ex track Greyhounds that could destroy hare, fox and roe; unfourtunately I've also seen ex track greyhounds destroy THEMSELVES on hare, fox and Roe, on their first run ! I've never had the opportunity to bring a Greyhound pup up as a "Lurcher", but I'm sure it could be done !

    Cheers.

  17. Not all game fairs are shite!! but those are in the minority? The organisers of last years Yorkshire Game Fair put out over £2,000 in trophies and rosettes on the Lurcher and Terrier show's over the two days. I and the organiser of the dog events gave out a substanstial amount of complimentary entry tickets and free camping to members of this forum and other sites, basically we wanted to give something back to the ordinary lads and lassies that supported us over the years. We will be doing the same this year

All the dog events were a massive success!

Every Game Fair has to appeal to the paying customer, unfortunately some become set in their ways and end up stale, with giving no value for money

The Yorkshire Game Fair itself is worth it because of the quality of traders, stands etc: compared to the other show that was held in Yorshire at the weekend, the difference is like night and day!

    Tom

Happy Anniversary, Tom :toast::drink: , for the Declaration Of Arbroath !!!

    Cheers.
