I never go stalking without a minimum of 10 rounds as you never know how many you will need. Always better to have more than not enough. What would you have done if you had only wounded that 2nd doe and neeed a 2nd shot ?

Yeah, lesson learned there to be honest. Usually a full mag of 4 is all I usually need as I don't often get that opportunity. Fortunately, the shot placement was good and a clinical shot.

Will be taking a second mag from now on though.

This afternoon’s outing was a trip up to some land with Longshanx, getting there around 4pm we headed straight for a small wood at the top of a large field where deer were seen grazing yesterday, now this spot is not ideal as it’s very open getting to it. We got to where we thought they would come out into the sheltered area in front of the trees and sat down in the field and waited, after half an hour the plan was to go for a walk as nothing had showed, as I lifted from the ground and glassed along the trees I noticed a deer, then another 2, we were not close enough for a shot so it was hands and knees to the hedge back with the intention of walking along to get closer, the deer were very skittish and soon disappeared back into the wood. Taking advantage of this we made our way to the edge of the wood and waited, it wasn’t long before a buck appeared closely followed by 2 doe’s, now these were a long way off, after 10 minutes or so one of the doe’s presented a shot so longshanx took the shot, a clean miss, you could tell how far away they were as the deer didn’t even flinch, once they moved on we edged a little further forward, now starting to lose the light another mature doe came out onto the wheat field followed by a young doe, not able to get any closer longshanx took the mature doe first, No miss this time the animal dropped on the spot, reloading we wait for what seemed like an eternity for the young doe to present a shot, in reality it was a couple of minutes, this one too dropped on the spot, collecting the deer, the mature doe was 187 paces and the young one 170, both perfect shot placement, the young animal was a fantastic shot, it would not stand still and the second it did stop, down it went, so with both of them unzipped it was time to drag them out the field to a gateway where longshanx could get the motor to, once he walked the mile back to the farm to get it ? a quality afternoon out ?

    Great write up mate.

Glad I managed to get their on the Saturday for a good walk around and have a good glass of the area. Made it worth while seeing where they were potentially holding up in the wood.

What made it harder was there was only one position to shoot due to the lack of backstop in other directions.

It felt like an eternity and going scope blind waiting for the young one. I put pressure on myself knowing I only had one round left, so had to make sure it was a clean kill. It was a relief she dropped on the spot.

Great afternoon, even more so when you come home with meat for the freezer.

Day number 6 and a bit of a stinker, fog is bad enough for pheasant shooting but freezing fog is a nightmare, we are getting a little low on birds now in many of the drives as the season moves on and some lose cover and others become wet and cold. Up to this point they have shot well over a third of what we put down, another two 25 bird days and they will be on the way to shooting half of what was put down, so they’ve had some good shooting. We made the day up mainly with drives that we thought there may be a few in with the weather we had, first was Gordon’s pen, there was a few came from here but mainly from the top rather than back of the pen as I would expect, not so much over Ben on this one, next off was the ruff patch next to Gordon’s pen that we use to hold the birds early in the season, again we had a few from here with the majority going back towards the pen, so the two back guns got so decent pheasants and a few fast woodcock, back to the shed now for elevenses, the animals made their way through my soup, corn beef and potato pie, a bottle of bramble gin, 2 bottles of Prosecco, half a bottle of port and 2 tray of cakes, next off before lunch was another ruff drive that we don’t normally bother with, we pushed a few pheasants out towards the guns stud in the gutter in front of us, once we reached the guns we waited while they were relined out before we pushed on through towards the farm, Ben got to open his account on this drive taking himself a hen

    Lunch

after lunch and with the bag looking a bit light it was time to do something about it so off to the piggeries ( tree side ) so far this season this drive hasn’t disappointed and it didn’t let us down today, once we are 30/40 yards into the drive the birds stop running and start flying, everyone got shooting here and them that were out in the field got some nice high fast birds over them ( the may not of hit them but at least they made some noise ?) after this drive the bag was more than doubled, now off to the other end of the piggeries ( ruff side ) some more added to the bag and a few more missed ( Ben ? ) a walk now to forestry pen again a few came out here, mainly to the left of the pen, to finish the day off we pushed the 2 blocks out behind the forestry building, a few pheasants and half a dozen woodcock came from here, over the day we pushed out about 20 woodcock and not 1 was downed, the final bird of the day was a cracking hen dropped by the youngest gun on the shoot, Jack, nice to finish on a high

the bag for the day was 25 pheasants picked and we think about 6 not picked, so not to bad for this time of year and with the weather we had, the guns worked hard for what they got today, I hope Ben enjoyed himself despite the less than favourable weather, I’m pleased he got to take a few with his 16 bore and thank you for the bottle of fine Welsh whiskey ? ??

Top write up mate, summed the day up perfectly. This season is going fantastic. You've done some top work and it has not gone unrecognised.

Was great to me up with Ben, what a top lad. Lived up to his whitty banter on here. By they way Ben its a double trigger?

I’ve just been to the farm to bag some wheat up, when I’d finished I pulled into the yard from the back shed where the farmer was stood talking to another farmer, not unusual you might think ? the other farmer had just got out of a brand new Lamborghini Urus, about 180k worth of car, in a ripped shirt and a pair of wellies and who said there’s no money in farming, I suppose it’s better than giving it to the tax man ?

    Wasn't Jeremy Clarkson was it??

I nearly took the sump off the van getting to the wheat on the farm, was alright getting to it but made a hell of a bang getting back up ?

Ammo get jammed in mag , apparently common problem with tikka mags

I have the same problem with mine, doesn't happen all the time. sometimes when you go to load the round gets stuck in the mag half way? I thought it could be to do with the hmr ammo? Gets frustrating after a while!

  7. Stav and I were only talking about the samething on Saturday while out. Saying how having a FAC/SGC makes you think before doing something stupid and getting into a brawl with the local d!ckhead after a few to many. It certainly calmed me down (along with the Mrs I'd rather face a copper than her when I got home after being locked up?

I wouldn't jeopardise my certs for anything.

My mate asked if he could put his name in my perm so he didn't have to pay the shooting club membership fees, I politely told him no and it doesn't work like that. Hes a sensible fella and understood when I explained.

    Cheers ben and SL

I’m cuffed to bits for him, I think I’m right in thinking that the long one has shot his first fox, rabbit, roe doe, roe buck and pheasant with me and long may our adventures continue ?

Yep, your correct mate??And hopefully long may it continue????

Still smiling today, yesterday was such a perfect day.

The Mrs found out I was keeping the skull?, her reaction was, "OMG, where are you putting it?"

Me," the heads going in the freezer till I get it done"

Mrs,"im never going in the freezer again" ???

Mrs, "then what you doing with it?"

Me, "it's getting hung on the garage wall above my prep bench"

Mrs, "Thank god for that I thought you were hanging it in the house" ?
