Would they have a big impact on roe, rabbit and fox numbers?

In areas where we have a lynx family, roe completely disappears in 2-3 years. They are moving away from danger or they are eaten.

I'm saying this from experience, I'm not quoting here from National Geographic or from some TV documentary.

It does strike me as somewhat hypocritical that 'we' think we can tell Africa how to conserve their native fauna and ecosystems when we wiped ours out hundreds of years ago and won't give reintroduction much consideration.

No need to go to Africa for seeing hypocritical "green" behavior. In Romania we are forced to fully protect bears, wolves and lynxes only because we had bad representatives when we negotiated EU membership.

The management of big predators was well organized, hunting ~400-500 bears each year and still maintaining a strong population. Now everything is out of controls, human attacks are often, crop and cattle damages are high (and rarely paid!) and revenge killing is a common thing.

Bunch of "conservationists" from Germany, France or Holland are lecturing us on how to coexists! It is simply outraging

What size of prey could a eurasian lynx take down mate ?

they could put down even adult male stags (even big stags, like ours from Romania). They will stalk from high points (trees or cliffs) and jump at the throat of the the prey.

The most affected game will be roe deer. Of course, it will need hiding points to stalk and large forest areas in order to avoid humans. It is very shy.

Human attacks are very rare but they exists.

Damage in domestic animals are not so bad as the ones from wolves or bears but they exist (especially lambs and goats)

The wild cats from the area will be killed and pushed back.

  4. Thank you all!

I just realized that the last post on this topic was from 2018. I was annoyed back then by the fact that I encountered some weird error while posting the story behind one of my roebucks.

I'm posting bellow some of my dearest memories related to roebuck hunting, the ones that I managed to shot open sight. They are not the biggest ones on my wall, but the ones that helped me to improve my hunting skills :)

This is my personal best in terms of distance. I managed to get close until I was 6m away from him :D

Not enough vegetation to use as cover for this one. Solution: crawling for 30m. In the evening I also found 5 ticks on my belly! Nasty little creatures!

As I said on another topic, this year I started late the season due to expanding family and to the damn COVID-19 outbreak.

Roe deer hunting is one of my favorite hunts and I was surprised to notice that is July and I have no new buck on my wall. Also, my wife started to complain because she wanted some good pasta with roe deer minced meat and the freezer was full only with wild boar meat :D.

I try in each year to hunt one roe buck with this little rifle (Mannlicher Schonauer mod 1903, in 6.5x54MS) that belonged to a dear friend of mine that now is in "the lands of eternal hunting". For my personal pleasure, I try to do it open sights.

After a very hot day and a loooong wait, I started to loose the hope. The gamekeeper also wanted to move, hoping that we will see some male in the last 15 min while going back to our car. I insisted to remain, because the old males should came out at the last light of the day, especially when is very hot outside.

And I was right! I was barely able to see it when he came out of the woods. The wind was perfect and I had to wait for him to get closer because I was unable to see it trough mechanical sights when aiming at long distance. He came in about 30m and managed to surprise me due to some thick bushes and ... I missed ? The buck was surprised and stopped 10m further. Luckily, I'm reloading instantly after I take a shot and I was able to take him with the second one.

The joy was immense, especially when I noticed the unique design and the thickness of the trophy.

  6. I had little time for hunting lately because I have been very busy due to family expanding (my first daughter, hopefully she will become a huntress ?) and to some work responsibilities.

However, I managed to stalk 2 nice boars (a good size 4-5 years male and a gold medal old tusker). The green grass of the spring was irresistible for them and the full moon provided enough light for my trusted Leica Magnus 2.4-16x56.

The first one is the young male. A very well developed for his age. I feel sorry somehow for hunting him, a male like this will become a gold medal in another ~3 years.

    IMG_20200519_022419.jpg.34f079831d10cf8f5d48ebec2a718259.jpg

The old tusker came 2 weeks after.

This one was starting to have problems feeding himself and would get weak and "surrender" to wolves in maximum 2 years

    IMG_20200603_115953.jpg.1fb295d16b8f67ef3b6f8d0a631748c3.jpg

The Norma Oryx bullet worked perfectly in both cases (not that would be very important in an ear shot :D )

When I will have some time, I will mount the tusks on proper wooden boards. Until then, they are filled with epoxy resin and oiled to prevent cracking.

  7. After receiving the invitation, I started to clean the oil from my usually unused shotgun. Then I put 3 alarms to be able to wake up at 2am and drive ~150km until the hunting area. The day was windy and cold with some thin ice near shores but the place was excellent - a huge are filled with artificial lakes and not harvested rice fields near the Danube.

I was a terrible shot but I somehow managed to shot 24 ducks from 6:30 until 1 pm (2 of them not in the pictures, destroyed by prey birds before having the chance to recover them). Drive back home for another 2h and then start taking off the feathers, burning the skin for any remaining ones and extract all the internal organs until ...4am. Too much work, next time I will offer some of them as "gifts" to my friends.

The reward was sweet after I picked up a young one for getting the breast out and quickly throwing that in a hot pan with garlic, butter, salt, pepper, white wine and some oranges at the end :D

For all the other ones, I will cook them in the oven, filled with dry plums and oranges and  with cabbage on the side.

  8. I'm always keeping the bones of the hunted animals. The spine will add a great flavor to any soup.

One of my favorite delicacy is this one: the big round bones from a red stag put in a hot oven until the bone marrow is boiling inside (~30-45 min, depending on the temperature)

To be served hot with salt & pepper, on toasted bred and with some Merlot.download.png.f34f1d16c8f9bb12c42ac3893f491ad1.png

  9. I had a very busy summer and I was unable to hunt as often as in the last years, but I could not miss the first night with full moon and no clouds. Especially now, when the first apples and plums are falling from the trees and the wild boars are looking for them the entire night.

I was lucky and I had my chance for a few second with this big boy here (>200kg of skin, bones and muscles. A little amount of fat). It is considered very big for mountain area because here the food is not so easy to find (no crops in the area for at least 20km south).

I was able to see only his back for a while but he exposed a little bit of his right side for half of a second just before entering a thick bush. I took the shot and the bullet smashed his ribs (2 broken at entry), completely destroyed the lungs (the heart was missed only with 5 cm), broke another rib at exit and remained in the thick armor skin of the left shoulder, in front of the first left leg.

The bad part was that it was a moving target and he was able to make a jump. Right after that bush, it was a deep slope (~20 m deep) and we had to use a winch to pull him out ? Then we had to drink hot coffee and talk for another 3 hours while the meet was cooling  enough to be put in the freezer.

Not a huge tusker compared with his body size but is still a beautiful trophy. The right fang was longer with 1 cm.

  10. For the ones that are looking for adrenaline, nothing beats a driven hunt for bears :D The animals are running and are chased by dogs. Hard to beat that ;)

Anyway, one of the problem bears was shot by a gamekeeper a few days ago after he was spotted near the village. The stomach was full of pork meat and he had the teethes damaged (possible after he was trying to escape a snare). It's a male and is evaluated at ~400 CIC points.

fck me 8500 quid for a bear hunt plus flights

my mate here in sask charges 2600 quid plus flights

    How big is that bear?

This price is that high because of the size of the animal. For a reference, I'm adding a picture with a gold medal bear (~310 CIC points) and a friend of mine near him. My friend is taller than me, ~1.90m.

Well the bear from this offer is over 500 CIC points! That is big!

Lot of money to shoot a bear plus flights .

I agree and I don't like this either.

It was a time when regular people just hunted bears during driven hunts with no exceptional cost added. Then, the foreign hunters interest increased the price way over the budget of an average hunter. Now, with this ridiculous small number of licenses allowed, the pressure is even bigger. My hunting club has a license now and that was sold for 4000+Euros (to a member!)

  13. I could not tell if this offer is good or bad because is too much paperwork with a foreign hunter and this offer is also mixed with some tourist visiting &stuff.

I just had a nice lunch (and few beers with some UK hunters in Reading) and I could understand now why are you surprised about the prices. In UK you could simply shot all the deer that are passing trough your property during the hunting season but in Romania, the state is the owner of the game and we have a fixed number of roe bucks to hunt for each hunting area. The average price for a Romanian hunter is 180-200 Euro/buck (no matter the size).  This is a "members only" price, if you want to hunt a buck on another club you will pay ~300Euros or even a very high price for big trophies (0.6 Kg +)

I'm not discouraging anyone to come and visit my country. If you are targeting large trophies then you could find some (but at high price, especially due to the "man in the middle"). If your budget is limited then you should just save the money for something that you could not get in UK (like a chamois, a well organized driven hunt at wild boars, a big stag or a bear) ;)

How did the bear get through that high fence?

A bear has no problem with any kind of fences. They are very good climbers. (many car accidents due to that, they are able to climb the fences that are used to block other animals from crossing the roads in some areas)

  15. I post this for a friend of mine, an experienced hunter and outfitter from Romania who asked me to help him with one announcement about a last minute offer for a bear hunting.

As some of you already know, bear hunting in Romania was stopped a few years ago and a combination of government incompetence and "green" NGO lobby is preventing us from reopening the bear hunting as it was before EU integration. This is happening despite the fact that they are doing great damage to the farmers and they are even killing and hurting peoples.

In some special occasions (like too much damage done to the farmers), a hunting permit is issued for that bear. Anyway, the nature of such a permit is forcing the hunting organization that is managing the area to take a quick action and is often very difficult to obtain the proper value of that animal.

In this specific case, the bear is big and is estimated to be way bigger than 500 CIC points.

The price for the entire package is 10.000 Euro - fixed price, no matter how large the bear will be.

This is including trophy fee &

    • 4 days guided hunting 1:1
    • 5 days accommodation with full board Romanian Hunting License
    • Assistance throughout the hunting
    • Planning a hunting ground (holes, huts, tents and camouflage towers, decoys, callers and others)
    • Return transfers between the airport and the hunting district
    • All transport in the hunting district

The normal price for a bear of 500 CIC points is ~15000E but this offer is valid only until 16 April 2019.

For more details about the offer, call the outfitter directly:  +40 753 098 098 Mr. Adrian Matei

Another superb post.   Very envious of that shooting situation.  That's a lot of pork to handle and butcher.  Beautiful countryside but I hate the cold and snow. Years ago one of my daughters went to poiana brasov skiing.  It was back in the days of nikolai Ceaușescu. About 1986/7.  I asked her to get a shooting magazine whilst she was out there but she said that all of the shops were virtually empty of anything  to buy. The snow fell very hard and she was delayed at the airport.

Many, many things are completely changed since then. You could buy anything you like, all you need to do is to be healthy and work in order to have the money for it :D Back then it was just one shooting/hunting magazine (with content approved by the party, of course :D )

The 2 males are quartered, frozen and labeled. After my flight back home, I will cut the best parts for myself and the rest will be sent to a butcher for salami.

The fact that they had almost no fat is very good and allows us to keep them longer in the freezer.

  17. After the end of the last driven hunt season, I had 2 individual permits remaining. They are valid until 14 May and I had enough time to stalk for at least one big male.

Since it was no hurry, I started to hunt in the mountains because we could always find a big solitary male in the huge forests. They are not afraid of wolves and even a bear will think twice before attacking such a male because it has great armor, it is very strong and it has 2 sharp knives.  Such a male will rarely go down from here and they are rarely responding to baiting. You need strong legs and time to spend in the woods and I had both but with no luck. At least I enjoyed the nature :)

    IMG_20190217_160341.jpg.5d6fe138b748f667dcff38833aba2255.jpg

I also spent some weekends on other types of hunting, like a pheasant driven shot and a fox & jackal hunt. I was still calm because I had time and I also had some nice tracks in 2 areas. Suddenly, I was notified that I need to fly to UK and work there for 4 weeks. Right after my return we also have the orthodox Easter and I realized that I may loose both permits. I decided to just spend a few nights and shoot any male I could find.

I had some luck this time, I was also helped by the full moon and I managed to shot my first male on 2019.  Not a big one, a young male of ~100kg. It was late in night and I have no picture from this.

2 nights before my flight I was back in the woods, waiting for another one. And I was lucky again :D  This male was 4-5 years old, it is not impressive but it is a nice one. At the same age, this would be twice this size in the plains area because he would have huge crops near him. IMG_20190322_092252.jpg.00a16a92de926ba691941d44740cee62.jpg

I had time only to extract his tusks and to fill them with resin (the ones from the left, 20,00 and 20,50 cm long). I will fix them on a wooden plate when I will be back in Romania.
