Regards the original op I have seen a massive boom/investment in UK industry. I've not seen the amount of apprenticeship schemes etc in my life time. Had a mate and his son over for a stalk and ratting in the afternoon .Parked in a gateway furthest from the farm and walked back into the ground to play the wind .Wasn’t long before I saw a doe slip through a hedge undisturbed by us then through a hunt gate we bumped half a dozen including a decent buck in velvet .No worries ,won’t be the last .In the next large field there was a doe and two followers feeding along the hedge so hatched a plan to skirt round the hedge line to close the distance .Nearly to a shooting point and the doe just wandered into the hedge followed by the two young .

Had my best tomato crop ever at the Allotments last year. I used to give excess tomatos away but last year we made loads of the "Dolmio" type sauces with tomatoes, garlic and onion, and froze them. Also made lots of green tomato and red onion chutney. I didn't have a Nostradamus moment and foreseen the shortages, just got lucky, I guess. I disagree.....i see it like premier league footballers you're going to pay more for the English ones but how much value do you put in your own stock ?......i have a couple of hardworking young lads who started a valeting business a few years back come round the gaff a few times a month and clean the motors they're nice friendly young English boys trying to make their way in life....i respect that and am happy to pay a bit extra in support of my own people.....at the end of the day nobody HAS to use foreigners to do things that Brits can and have done for generations.

Coincidentally, I was ferreting on some new permission yesterday, and the farmer said to help myself to a few turnips, So dinner today was sausage and bacon in gravy with onions, done in the oven, and carrots, turnip and new potatoes, no tomatoes needed. I think it might be different with " point and squirt" dogs that are just run off a slip. They are a sort of one trick pony. I try for a modicum of obedience and steadyness type training and once its hairing about days are over the dog can still be useful in other ways like shooting and ferreting .
