Had a walk around haweswater today with a good mate of mine. The weather was great sun beaming down on us all day with a nice little breeze(packed me big coat) but it was t shirt weather. Its been a little while since I've had a good walk out and i could feel it, legs were burning and lungs were pumping but we managed it. Even managed to get a glimpse of some beasts high up on the hill from the carpark using some random women's binos who just came over to me as i was trying to point them out to my mate and says here get a look at them with these. I've seen this dog change from a nervy wierdo with no manners to a functional mooching dog. She's never going to be a world beater but she's sharp round the bushes and will probably keep getting better the more work she sees. A lad with loads of time to give and no huge expectations would probably get more out of her than anyone else.

It's a dilemma with no definitive answer. Do you rehome and hope the dog doesn't end up on the lurcher merry-go-round, or do you cull, and know exactly what's happened to the dog ? Its a choice only the owner can make. Cheers.

I can see the logic in that to a point, but it doesn't take account of people's different expectations. Not everyone wants to be a hunting super hero, plenty of dogs that would disappoint lads who are desperate to excel would make other people very happy. Why shoot them? No doubt there's some that are better off gone but I bet plenty of dogs get pts just because it's easier than finding a home for them. It's personal choice at the end of the day I suppose.

Aye that’s why I’m making an attempt here, and not taking her to a kennels or something daft. I knew when I put the post up I would get the usual ‘shoot her’ suggestions. When I was crawling about learning to stalk there was no one there to tell me to get up, I just did what I wanted (no much changed in that respect) I think ive used things I learnt then throughout my hunting life. I used to be jealous of lads who came from hunting families but now I think learning from my mistakes on my own wasn't a bad thing. Well I was out today on the drillings again , I was like a Minneapolis copper thinning out the blacks ?? I didnt start off too well shooting a bit erratic but once I pulled myself together didnt do too bad. I was out for crop protection but there was a second good reason too as there was 7 lapwings and 4 curlew in the field I was shooting so a bit of a helping hand for them too. I picked 126 birds including a crow I found after I had packed up that a buzzard had feasted on. Lost a few birds so imagine must have shot around 140. Yes, if you know 100% where the dog will end up, then rehome, but, sadly, in the case of lurchers, they more often than not end up being passed around, lied about, sold on by peddlers, etc. As I said, it's a choice only the owner can make. Cheers.

Spot on that, I did it the same way, no one else in my family shoots, I started on my own, learned from my mistakes and from people I met along the way and now I think I’m pretty good at what I do and I’d still have no problem crawling to get at what I wanted to shoot ?

It’s this time of year we’re stuff is plentiful as it’s moving about to breed but the shooters thin it all out come season time seen it before don’t have your hopes up for a bountiful season.it happens every year

I know a few lads that have taken dogs on and they have suited them and they have had a great working life. Be interesting to know how many people who spout the usual ‘put a bullet in it’ would or have seen it through. Unless it was seriously injured or had attacked my kids, I couldn’t do it.

Sometimes its better knowing there in ground then wondering where theyve ended up. Id be very dubious of rehoming anything at the moment especially a bitch even if spade dont mean it doesnt hold abit of value to someone unkowing. I allways think if its not good enough for me its no good to others its not nice but its part of hunting with dogs if youve any sort of mindset youll get failures its what happens to the failures that shows alot about a person
