  1. I haven’t been posting on here for a while but I had a look today and I feel that my input might be valid as I earn my living as a gamekeeper and have done for the last 15 years or so . There are some valid and interesting points of view in the previous posts . If you really want to get into keepering then go for it . Is there a future? Who knows. I agree that there there are aspects of the shooting industry that can be improved. But my experience is that the game that is shot on the estate I look after goes to the game dealer and in to the food chain . Poorly paid ? Not always. The keepers I

  2. Recently moved a few sheds on the chicken farm I do a bit on so gave a mate from way back a shout with his two terriers ,a Russel and a border . The first shed was moved on news years eve and we ended up with a couple over 100 rats . Second shed was yesterday morning and we did 196. Mate responded with an invite to stalk a fallow buck which I achieved first light this morning How it should be and sets the bar for this years mates list .Nice one John ,my kind of lad and puts you firmly on the ratting events list .

  6. I'm not a keeper so I don't know shit really but I'm going to say what I think anyway. The future (beyond five years time) of traditional keepering is quite possibly abroad, places where operating costs are lower and politics more favourable. At home, in the UK, I really think we need to adapt, hard! Our value of 'sport' over 'harvest' is going to be our undoing in the 21stC. When it costs £45 to kill the bird but the meat is worth nothing alarm bells should be ringing! The public just won't accept it "Hunting for food is fine, hunting for fun is disgusting". As always, it's a

The only downfall with penicillin is too readily available therefore used too much by those who should know better .No antibiotic should be used as a prevention to an infection ,only treatment for first signs .Jabbing a dog every time it sees something vastly reduces its effectiveness when needed .

  14. Mate I think it would be good if you got yourself a trade to fall back on like Stiff said?... Then get out there and find yourself a job that gets you out into the countryside and that could open a few more doors for you, tree surgery, fencer, wildlife management, contract driving plant/combines etc............ If you still want to do it then get to college and get your head down... I wish you all the luck bud?I had dreams very similar when younger, but found it wasnt that easy a thing to fall into.... So I got my self a trade or 2. I got skills now that interests lots of land owners, keepers

  18. The bottom line is that America is the most powerful military force on the planet ( you could argue China are if they got involved ) and they now have a leader who unlike the appeaser Obama will put his country first and won’t take any shit from anybody else. Countries like Iran have no choice but to accept this as they would be wiped off the face of the earth if they went to war with America. I am sure that to save face amongst their people they will carry out some small scale retribution but that’s a about as far as it’s going to go ........

  19. I think there is a future. Nit sure what it is yet but there will always be a need for gamekeeping type jobs, even if shooting goes completely south and all guns are banned there will always be a need for conservation work. It's becoming a very competitive industry with people in their 40's, 50's etc taking career changes to a job they enjoy rather than being accountants etc as well as the youngsters like yourself. You will be competing with people who are extremely well qualified and eloquent and will potentially have the funding to take volunteering roles to gain experience as we

As some will know I do a lot of wildlife photography, trying to benefit wildlife and myself I built a Tawny Owl box and a Kestrel box which will be going up this weekend on a farm I have permission to do so... (just need to secure a branch/perch to each box front) Just wondering if anyone puts nest boxes up for any kind of birds, whether on permission or in the garden ??? If you do or have, what kind of birds and have they been successful in being used ???

Day 6 tomorrow and there’s still loads about, as we approach the end of the season there will be no prisoners taken tomorrow, everyone will be told to get at them, there’s a few guests shooting tomorrow and they are proper shots, one been my mate Morris, so I’m expecting a good bag and some serious bird poaching which will no doubt lead to some good banter, I’ll be running the beaters so with any luck I can put on a good show for the guns

I struggle with anxiety and depression a lot because I can’t stand the way people are nowadays and I don’t mean I can’t talk to people I’m a weirdo who sits in my house. It’s just when It all gets too much I wouldn’t rather be no where else than on the land. Just me and Freedom. Shit wages? I’ve been dirt poor all my life anyway I’ve gotta start somewhere. 32. Most of the keepers I know keep terriers and some have the odd Lurcher . Most of the good keepers who are a bit old school like me , spent their formative years rooting around a hedge bottom with a ferret or with a running dog or two. None of us went to college . Does that make us better keepers? I think it gives you field craft which can’t be taught in front of a blackboard. But it doesn’t matter if you can outwit the local one for the pot boy . Because he’s not your enemy, like has been posted before , disease is a major concern now as are gangs with catapults , but you would be a fool to ta

  36. I have 22lr, 222, 223, 43 & 270 to chose from but over the years I have shot many more foxes with the 22lr than anything else. This is because I have used the 22lr rifle when wandering for rabbits. I was always loaded with rws subsonics for the rabbits. I never had high velocity rounds loaded and It was always a chest shot. Mostly I shoot at abour eighty paces because I noticed that, that was the distance when I could see a pair of eyes like a pair of binoculars. The targets nearly drop on the spot and the odd one might run 20 to 30 paces and then fail but this is quite normal with d

Thats true, the birds get sent away or unused which is not the way it should be.most guns dont take a brace home, they have,nt got a clue how to prepare a bird for the oven, they should,nt shoot then in my opinion.the dead bird after paying for processing becomes bloody expensive.a mate of mine went on a duck day, they shot 700 duck.bloody slaughter, dont sit right with me

That teacher is obviously of a type that, unfortunately, is all too common in the education system nowadays - more interested in teaching little kids about LGBT rights and, more than likely, massaging her own Ofsted scores so that she can keep hiding in the school system - I've seen a few just like her. They've no business filling kids heads with this shit - she's brainwashing. She's not even giving them a balance by telling them that it's ok to disagree with those views. At that young age, they should be learning the 3 R's and developing their social interactions am
