  1. Main problem is rivers are unpredictable. If we fished a river this year we would have had trees coming past due to the amount of rain. The comp was the idea of Arch, Wilf and me and your right it was to be a traditional river comp, hence the first one being organised by Arch on the trent and you putting up your brother's accommodation...it was a good do....but the fishing was hard for most as again the river was in flood..I think 8 blanked! We always try and organise a day river fishing or sea fishing on the Saturday to compensate for the match on a puddle. The comp is a l

  2. Sensible words fellah... I've relatives in both Australia and New Zealand and knowing my interest in Herding dogs, they have always forwarded information, back home. It is a long story, and hopefully, one to be told (at a later date?) but in the 1980s, before I bred my Cattle Dog lurchers,...my main priority was in importing some Kelpie blood. Unfortunately, I got kinda sidetracked.....things happened...? Anyway, its no matter,...however,..I do recall Australian sheep shearers that I've chatted with, telling me, that in many outback areas,..the dingo, is quite rightly hated wi

  4. Just seen Simon Weston on TV advertising the poppy gold coin. If anyone saw the documentary Simon's War after the Falklands then they saw one of the hardest guys ever. What that fella went through and to come back and still give to his country. Total respect. Cheers, D.

  5. I don’t know about anyone else, but I always find discussion like this can easily move into the realms of “cringeworthy” The world is awash with hard men (and women) for one reason or another.....not one thing defines them. If we are talking just about street fighting, then if a bloke is twice your size and mean as a scrapyard dog, take a lump of wood to the c**t until he will never be the same man again........no hardness required, just the mindset to do it. Dont expect a pat on the back or a medal or the adoration of your peers because you probably won’t be regarded as “hard”

  6. I was speaking to my uncul other night ,he's 92 yr old and he's forgot more than most no about lurchers and this was his words . all the xs you see today at lurcher shows are the same as what they had in 50s apart from Salukis but as a kid he remembers a fella having a brace of lurchers that looked spit of a first x grey, sal belonging to a German gypsy who's family fled the war . he also said it's not the dogs that Chang but the folk keeping them !! to many hobby hunters and Rosette chasers , as for % i don't bother with it , he always says best dog is the one catchi

  7. Greyhound or whippet the speedy building blocks in lurcher breeding, not forgetting the saluki, But for me what the hell is this percentages crap about genetics is not that simple it does not follow the rules that some people try to breed to. Working lurcher to working lurcher breeding usually produces the goods. The point i am making is its not all about physical attributes to a dogs breeding, but more about its mental attitude that you should be trying to breed into them. YIS KIC

  9. Hopefully these few old pictures and some of recollections from my early teens (the late 1950’s and early 1960’s) may be of some interest. They’re all old style “rag whippets” and pre date the requirement for a whippet to be registered with the Kennel Club in order to enter a race. Typically these dogs ran from about 14-20 lbs (sometimes smaller) and anything past say the mid 20’s would be questioned as to whether it was actually a true whippet (rather than maybe a whippet x greyhound). At that time, my father ran a “drinkers pub” in the heart of the Black Country (aka the Industrial Midl

Don't post often but had a bit of luck with a landowner I had to deliver to just commented on the amount of rabbits I had seen on his drive when he said there bloody everywhere, I just mentioned that I would be willing to shoot a few with air rifle if he wanted, his reply was fill your boots take as many as you want, turns out he owned 150 acres. Went the other morning and shot 6 was at car loading gun in back when he.came over and was pleased with the 6 but said try for more please, OK I said I will, he then replied by saying it was a shame my air rifle wasn't powerful enough for bloody muntj

  11. Hi all. well where do I start, here goes so I hope I don't bore you, nearly 45 years ago as a young lad growing up in the city and very little hobbies on offer for someone closing in on their teenage years,i knew a greyhound man that I walked his greyhounds and he brought me to the races and if his dogs won he would reward me with a extra few shillings for getting his dogs fit to win, through him I met a friend of his that kept ferrets and little did I ever think this would be the start of me getting into the hunting with dogs and ferrets, this chap was about 6 years older than me bu

  14. My 1st dog was a Corgi x Russell. Not the best of dogs though. Bad with other dogs and not that good with people either. The scars are still noticible from times when I had to intervene to save him or his victim. Not the kind of dog that would survive long today as a family pet. Crazy thing is we used to open the front door on a morning and let him out to roam the estate until my parents came back from work or myself from school. Not that my parents were anti-social irresponsible people, it was the norm back then. Not sure who hated him the most though, the neighbours, the neighbours dogs, the

  17. I always think conversations of this nature go in the direction of what society deems " hard ".....and its a pretty sad truth that most people see it as something to do with fighting. The 2 examples i gave of the " hardest " people i know have absolutely nothing to do with fighting.....fighting comes perfectly natural to some people so whats hard about it. It just seems a sad symbol of society when regular people discuss a subject like this and it always ends up in fighting talk.

  18. I'm with Stiff, why the hell should a breeder give away pups he's bred and put money in to himself? True you should only be breeding for the needs of yourself and the dogs you have but you still have to feed and worm them. If folk are not willing to pay for a dog then that makes you question how well they would look after it.

If I ever bred a litter , I’d give them away to my mates if required however I’ve never understood this mentality of a total stranger walking away from yours with something you have raised and possibly had for generations for f**k all many years ago when I had coursing dogs , I walked away from my pals house with a pup that became easily my best all round killer , he’d paid some serious money for the stud so I felt obliged as his mate to pay my way in the deal unless your sharing bloodlines imho you shouldn’t be gifted on agreements I want a dog to be my dog and not fee
