  1. Yep u heard it right a couple of boys from down the road where kind enough to offer a welsh weirdo and a Scottish gobshite a day/ night on there land. We met around 8am at a point off there choosing and set off. I must say I was alittle taken back with how welcoming the boys where to me and my son considering they where friends off the big weirdo and I was just a tag along ?. All dog’s there settled in not a bad atmosphere between them. We split up done some Reed beds and and a few burrows here and there and a few nasty knocks along the way. We stopped on 22-25 not quite sure as the hosts eve

  2. Another cause of dogs messing about is their owner encouraging them into an earth. I've lost count of the amount of times I've seen lads egging dogs on to check places, it's totally unnecessary.

  3. I think again an age and generation gap thing is showing its head here, when I was young and bang at it the only people that had 4x4 transport were the keepers and land owners the rest of us were running round in old transits and escourt which you parked in a safe location like a pub or service station and walked several miles to the ground before having a pop, in and out under the cover of dark and leave no signs so you could return, farmers and keepers would scan lay byes for dodgy vans and slash the tyres if they found them, it was a game and we all new the rules, today's so called hunters

  4. I`ve been buying pellets in bulk order for a few years now, they all arrive, 5000 a time, carrying the same batch number, all made by the same dye/ cast, rather than differing batches. Not sure if any of you lads weigh your pellets, ( i don`t ) but i read a very interesting article about a pretty thorough chap, new to Hunter Field Target disciplines. He weighed all 500 JSB Exacts with a nominal weight of 8.44g. Weight. ( grain ) Quantity.

  5. Had this bar cut in 2 threaded and welded an axe head on by local engineering firm. Fits nicely on the back of the bike and is there if needed. Thinking about having another piece made that has a t-handle on that screws in aswell for more confined spaces where the full 6' length is too long

  7. Yeah, they do spoil the view a bit, when you are at the bottom of the farm you could be in the middle of nowhere, then you look up at them and realise you are 10 minuets from Middlesbrough The only thing worse than been 10 minuets from Middlesbrough is been 5 minuets from Middlesbrough ? after that you are in Middlesbrough and that’s an other level of misery

  9. I dread to think of the amount of terriers that have been put down as being no good when in reality, it's the person holding the lead that was 'no good'.

  10. I've seen plenty of terriers driven to messing around in empty places by just using them out of the quad. I wouldn't say it made them any less of a finder, just more likely to believe there's always something home because they don't know any different

  12. Finally got a day when I could spend some time really getting after some birds. I made the mistake of running them together for a bit, so my bitch became very competitive and broke on the first bird. A shake and a talking to sorted that out, and she followed up by making a fantastic long blind retrieve on a bird on another bird the pup flushed while she was out on a marked retrieve. I elected not to send the pup because he wasn’t as steady as he should have been.

  13. First outing for this year's kits, 3 in the bag and 1 escapee wasn't bad, but not as many as I'd have expected. Could the fields being mowed the previous day encourage the resident bunnies to drift next door to more undisturbed warrens?

  14. Was out with mates one day and a terrierman from down the country and pulled up to a gateway and the mate reached into the back of the van and let his terrier out of its box, the lad from down the country started shouting catch that terrier catch that terrier there’s cows in that field lol. Like the mate had just unleashed a fecking lion lol. Terrier trotted down the field beside us and over the top of rabbit burrows that we had seen rabbits skip into and when we got to the earth we had good 5 foot dig, the lad commented that he’d never seen a dog from that line as well behaved. Lol. The mate

  16. That’s exactly it, only time they are of the chain is at the mouth of a hole. Never seen it happen with a properly reared and entered terrier that is regularly allowed a bit of few running and using its nose in a natural way. A terrier that is only of the chain when it gives a mark at an earth soon catches on that that is what it takes for it to get of that chain.

  17. It’s not only hunt terriers it happens to either, seen it happen to a few terriers from the same family and the lads saying it’s in the line which is wrong in my opinion, I just think it can happen easier in really driven dogs and take careful handling.

  19. Many full time hunt terriermen have dogs that only ever see work as exercise .Out the box down a hole back in the box ,home .It's called box bound and ruins a decent finding dog .

  22. At long last I got to get out at first light for a full morning of walking and hunting. What a beautiful day. Took a crow off the wing and a Maggie. As a shot gun the little .45 punches well above it's weight. Running out of shot on crows I firked a ball out and shot a 20yd squirrel to end a glorious morning. Plenty of pheasants about too and I think another fox is about too! U.

  24. Seen it happen a few times with mates dogs because the lads always seem to have an excuse as to why they cant give their dogs a walk.Whereas littermates or stuff ive had from the same blood that get the chance to have a good run and hunt up everyday wont even enter or search an empty spot or even stop to sniff at an entrance.

  30. Postie, this one took 4 weeks to catch. Very small garden bordered on 3 sides by a brick wall. He'd been operating next door where there was no permission to trap, and only making occasional raids on my customers lawn via, I assume, a fault or tunnel somewhere in the wall footing. As previously stated in this thread he was a real devious trap avoider and his demise was down to dumb luck on my part. This putangue was set vertically in a tunnel that went straight down, about eight inches below the turf. When I pulled it out, I was bemused to find the mole in this position until further inve

  35. Where do any virus's come from initially, they just evolve. It was first documented in imported laboratory rabbits in Uruguay. It's lethality was recognised as being useful for rabbit control and was then simply artificially released. I haven't seen any literature that shows it having been modified or created to enhance it's effect. If it has jumped the species barrier, it's not surprising. Hopefully we can mitigate the impact. But given that myxi spread so fast due to the burrowing nature of rabbits, it may have a harder time spreading through hares that have much less contact with each

  41. As per usual we were on the fields just as the day was breaking, after instructions from the keeper were he wanted us to tackle first we got kitted out and made our way out,I went to the left of our starting point and my mate went right, along a gulley which was littered with holes. Nell flushes a rabbit out of the reeds and gave chase, unsighted at times, now I’m sure if I had given chase I’d have picked it up, instead it made the safety of a wall, after a few choice words she was soon marking a small warren, so with nets round I dropped a pair of albino sisters in and waited, I didn’t have l

  42. Yeah I built it after my canvas bell tent got flattened by that heavy snow last winter and to be honest the tent was up at least 18 months and was starting to go mouldy even after being retreated so I’ve taken it down now for this winter so I’ll be camping in the pallet house or my old caravan for the winter its great I’ve got an old canvas hammock that hangs just in front of the burner so I can just put an arm out and chuck a log or two in without having to get up ??
