Kay 3,709 Posted May 1, 2009 Author Report Share Posted May 1, 2009 I have hung some fat balls out in the garden as were inundated with song birds for the first time in donkeys yrs here, i want to know has anyone had any experience of them melting in the sun thats all reallyyou cant beat a pair of tits round your fat balls first thing in a morning or early evening its just a bit to early in the year to expect a swallow though .. Geoff.C 0 Posted May 1, 2009 Report Share Posted May 1, 2009 I have a thing like a light weight coil spring for fat balls. Just pull the coils apart and push the balls inside. It just hangs under the bird table with a light chain. The birds are still going at the fat balls like winter time. Also have a couple of seed feeders with a mix of peanut chips and sunflower seed. I also make my own fat balls whenever we have any fat from cooked meats, as long as it is not salty. Quote Link to post Share on other sites

The tit's here aren't bothered atall about fat balls, but the robins adore them. I bought a couple of those slab fat blocks too when they were buy one get one free, but they're too damned axpensive to buy all the time. The birds are still coming in the same numbers as the winter, and woddy has started coming again too We even had mum and Dad and their 3 babies last year, amazing sight! They would all fly over to the apple tree, leave babies there, have a go at the peanut feeders, then take it back to the babies patiently waiting ... awsome to watch. I thought about having a go at a meal wormery.... I read up on the internet that its quite easy to do. Involves a quality street tin, sheets of news paper, and cabbage leaves... and a pot of live meal worms of course! Has anyone here ever had a go at it???? Quote Link to post Share on other sites

I remember there being some tip to drill holes all the way round the tin ... I think I'll just give it a go, would be nice to think the chicks are getting some quality grub. BBB 7 Posted May 3, 2009 Report Share Posted May 3, 2009 there is starting to be more natural food about this time a year insects ect.so most birds move away from our free offerings. you'd be better off to put some water out for em. birds like to drink and bathe regular and as the weather warms up a large water dish in middle of the lawn draws plenty a birds in..
